The Theme Park History of The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man (Universal's Islands of Adventure)

- The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man is a motion-based, 3D dark ride that opened at Islands of Adventure on May 28th, 1999, and at Universal Studios Japan on January 23rd, 2004. Based on Marvel Comics’ Spider-Man, the attraction is a hybrid ride combining special roving motion vehicles with 3D projection, elaborate physical sets, and both practical and tactile effects. In this episode we take a look at the history of Islands of Adventure, how a failed deal with DC Comics paved the way for Marvel, the new technologies and techniques used for the attraction, the deal between Marvel and Universal, and how that affects Marvel’s parent company Disney, and the upgrades to the attraction in 2012.

Now that Stan Lee is no longer with us, I'm more in favor of them keeping the Spider-Man ride at Universal forever as a relic. Cause the ride itself has 2 cameos by Stan Lee. Not to mention that it's a fun ride on it's own merits. It's arguably *the* best ride at Islands of Adventure.

You see him running into the theater with a date right before Doc ock destroys it and then when the scoop falls into spidey's web you see him standing outside of the store that you fall in front of
Plus Stan Lee loved the ride. He rode it quite a few times even into his 90s.
God I've been on this so many times and don't remember those. Especially not the garbage truck. I never knew that. I guess I was paying too much attention to Spidey. I can still say quite a few of the lines from this too.

That first scene when Spider-man jumps on the ride vehicle and the whole thing jolts you is the most amazing integration of 3D screens and actual ride movement I have ever scene. This ride is a masterpiece.

So my boyfriend and I were at Universal Florida last Monday and wanted to go over to the Hulk we didn't know it had been down for at least and hour when we got into line. We actually only waited around maybe 15 minutes plus a few more since this crazy woman was just having a fit in front of us and had to be removed eventually. I kid you now we were actually riding the rollercoaster when Stan Lees passing was announced but didn't find out about it till we were sitting in the Fantastic Four cafeteria area right after. So naturally we walked right over to Spiderman which has Stan in it at least twice as a sorta farewell to the legend. What a sad day in the Marvel park section that ended up being for us :(
Was the crazy woman removed because of the Hulk being down or Stan Lee's passing? Had to be a though time for anyone who was at the park when the news broke, knowing they were in a place that Stan Lee had help create.
@@ThemeParkHistory honestly I expected an announcement over the intercom or something talking about Stan but no one seemed to know about it yet. The woman got up and kept saying something weird about the seat she was in but refused to leave the cart so they couldn't even look at it since it was in the middle of a row. She just kept going on and on wouldn't get in the chair or go to the side so they could figure out what the problem was. Finally she locked herself in the chair strap and all then started screaming when they sent the cart out I dont think she was all there.

@@thedalystreamer5966 that's awesome, they did the same the day I was at the Hogwarts attraction, they put Lillies outside Snape's office door in the queue, and at Park closing everyone there lined up around the castle and help up their wands. It was a bittersweet experience but I was happy to be there for it to celebrate Alan Rickman.
I truly hope Marvel Superhero Island never leaves, because while I love the MCU and it's versions of the characters, there is something so special about how 90s the island is. It's a bygone era of Marvel Comics that I cherish. The early 2000s carried over the feeling of the 90s Marvel and that's the Marvel I grew up on. This ride feels like it was ripped directly from the 90s animated series and that era of books and I couldn't love it more. W.E.B. is cool and all and the Spider-Man stunt animatronic is beautiful and Tom Holland is an amazing Spider-Man, but this right here? This is *my* Spider-Man
I agree with much of what you said except the MCU is garbage and Tom Holland is terrible at his role.
I had NO IDEA that the buildings and set moved down like that, the ride felt so realistic that as a child i though we had legitimately started moving up like an elevator.💀💀💀
This is so incredibly fascinating it BLOWS my mind that something like this was conceived and executed so long ago. The new generation of rides should follow in Spider-Man’s footprints, its not just screens, its the practical effects and sets that really build and sell a 3D ride like this.
The excellence of this ride is seen in it's longevity. Despite being nearly 20 years old, it is still a great ride!
It has stood the test of time and for the right reasons! It's will probably be the most important attraction Universal will ever create, as it help usher in a new era of theme park rides and upped the ante of what an attraction can be.
You know, I almost DIDN'T like this ride, because the very first time I rode it, that fancy and wonderful timing system that controls all the screens and special effects was actually OFF. Nothing fired at the time it was supposed to, so we never actually knew what was going on. Fortunately, the employees, once we came back to the loading dock, immediately told us "no, stay on, we're letting you go again, sorry about that," and so my family and I got to experience the ride in its full glory. :) INSTANTLY became one of our favorites, and I'm so glad that it's still in the park. :)

Ive never been all that impressed with the Hulk. Its an innovative coast but its theming to Hulk seems to be primarily in the fact that its green. Its disappointing compared to Spider-man
Originally went to Universal Orlando in 2009 as a high schooler. Just went a few weeks ago as a 30 year old. Just as amazed as I was back then.

10 inches!? I remember that drop and how intense it felt 18 years after I rode the thing. That’s a very impressive simulation, especially for its time.
I love how when you encounter Spidey for the first time he says "nice shades" referring to the fact that you're wearing the 3D glasses

I rode this for the first time (and only time) when I was 8 years old, on 2007. It completely rocked my world, felt like I was Spidey. I was scared of almost all attractions but it made me feel brave, because no matter what, Spidey was there for me.
Couple of weeks ago, I got to travel to the US once again and visited Islands of Adventure, I knew I had to ride this.
Got so emotional, felt like a kid all over again. Plus that Stan Lee voice at the end hit me like a truck. I love this ride. If I ever have kids one day, I'd love for them to experience it.

This ride will always have a special place in my heart. I spent my seventh birthday at islands of adventure ten years ago and was given a fast pass for Spider-Man. That ride marked the beginning of my obsession with superhero’s. My family had a yearly pass for universal for 5 years when I was growing up and Spider-Man was a ride that we went on every single visit.
I visit Universal more often than Disney World.
The Amazing Adventures of Spiderman is a ride that has never gotten old. From age 5 to 25, this is still my favorite ride!
I remember visitng Universal Studios Orlando as a kid and being completely blown away by this ride. Over a decade later, I rode the attraction at Universal Studios Japan, and let me tell you, I was grinning from ear to ear every bit as much as I did as a kid! More than 20 years on, and it's *still* one of the most spectacular dark rides ever made.
This is my favorite ride of all time. I've been a HUGE Spidey fan ever since I was a little boy and the fact this ride opened just one week prior to me being born is truly awesome!
I never understood why scream has such a small role in the ride due to how different and cool her character was not to mention I don’t even remember them using hair for anything which is her actually power. I remember being quite terrified of her as a child so I wonder if that hindered the amount of Time she is featured.
I think they didn't give her a bigger role because she isn't that well known as Doc Ock or the other villains are with casual fans. I always though her inclusion with the sinister syndicate was weird, like they threw her with the group at the last minute.
I'm honestly surprised that they didn't use Venom instead of Scream
Eduardo Pantoja for some reason I thought she was supposed to be a venom redesign of sorts
I think they originally planned to use Venom or Carnage but their roles got increasingly smaller, so they switched them out for Scream
They probably wanted to include a female foe so that the Syndicate wasn’t such a boys’ club. But Spidey doesn’t have many villainesses (and the ones he does have often reform like Black Cat). If they put it together now, I guess they could use the new version of the Beetle.

Okay that makes more sense. When I went on the ride for the firs time this year, I figured it opened sometime in the 90's because of the cartoon in the line que, and I kept thinking "wow, that is really good CGI for the 90's."
The opening of the ride with the silhouette of Spider-Man swinging by, the Spider Signal sliding across the walls with that music... Gives me goosebumps!
This ride is INCREDIBLE! I went back when I was 8 and I’m 23 now, I was fortunate enough to be able to go to the park again in septenber after 15 years and this ride was one of the most nostalgic for me. Bless my boyfriend for taking me to universal for my birthday this year. He helped me relive my child hood. I never thought I was going back to universal. I’m a lucky guy.
The ride never gets old, i still find it to be the best dark ride because its still the most agressive ride, the car movements are snappy and fast and it feels more connected to what happens on screen, specially when Electro electrocutes the car and when Doc grabs it with one of its arms to burn you. Other dark rides, or similar rides are not as agressive, most just take a more smooth and soft approach, which is fine, but not as fun imo.

I went on this ride on a high school senior trip to Universal Orlando. It was (and still is) one of my favorite rides there.
Same here! Rode it back when it first opened in 99 and there's been very few rides that have been able to match how exciting Spider-Man is.

Thanks for watching Mr Zoso! It's amazing how much of an impact Stan Lee had in general with Marvel. Whether it was comics/cartoons/tv shows/movies/video games/theme parks, Stan Lee had a major role in creating some of the best experiences thanks to all the characters he helped create.
Everything about this ride is perfect! The screens are so beautiful to the eye, the vehicles sync up so well with the screens, the booms and practicals are perfect, the voice acting is fun, and so is the music! 10/10 :)
This is my all time FAVORITE ride at islands of adventures! Its so fun and such a classic, always the first ride of the day!

My greatest theme park experience was getting in 1999 for the soft open of Islands of Adventure. I rode Spider-Man four times because there were almost no lines. It was mind blowing at the time.
what I also love about this ride is when the ride needed an update, instead of completely changing the beloved ride, they kept it all the same just updated the graphics! this is how all rides should be updated instead of being taken away!

I still find it insane how the king of theme parks and rides, Disney, made a ride that doesn’t even attempt to hold a candle to a version that opened over 20 years ago. I find that honestly insane. Goes to show Universal can still make some really good rides even if they aren’t as popular as Disney.

@@goast2 This ride came out three years before the first Sam Raimi film though. Jameson in this ride is voiced by Chris Edgerly (who also voices Spider-Man). According to his imdb page he mostly does video game voiceovers, especially voice doubling in licensed games when the original actor declined to reprise their role. In particular he seems to voice Aragorn in every LotR game he appears in.
One of my favourite theme park attractions ever. Excellent video. The second time I rode this, the screen for the climactic section malfunctioned and was blank. It was interesting to feel how much of the motion was enhanced and exaggerated by the video.

Poseidon’s fury is probably one of the strangest attractions I’ve ever experienced but I definitely think it’s awesome and creative. I’ll definitely be disappointed when it becomes a Harry Potter attraction

I think spiderman could do with another overhaul. All the queue still feels very 90's and IMO it should be updated to have the more modern aesthetic that hulk now has.
Problem with any overhaul is Universal needs to get approval from Marvel. I don't know if Disney would be willing to allow them to make any changes, especially since Comcast and Disney are rivals now.

They might be able to update the queue, looking at the Hulk they did update the queue so it's possible. Might be because of the Spider-Man ride opening at California Adventure in 2019. Maybe Disney is waiting for their ride to open before they let Universal update theirs?

I always remember riding this ride as a kid because it didn’t have long wait times like the other attractions in islands of adventure and it also had nice and cool a/c for those hot days in the park.

I would really like DC Land, but I do prefer MARVEL.
If they ever did DC it should be based on the comics, not the movies. I don't think they would do well, as the DC movies haven't been that well received by fans.
