This is what was so fantastic. Whether winning or losing, at the start of a match or the end, you were never too far away from the next beautiful shot.
Made it while sticking with rather classic strokes. Eastern forehand and a very flat one handed backhand. Makes what he did in a time of power and spin all the more impressive.
Roger Federer single handedly raised the level of Tennis. He forced everyone to have to become better, to work harder than ever before. I don't think Novak or Nadal would have become as good as they are today, without Roger leading the way. For me he's the GOAT - The Maestro.
In thise backhand slice disguises, one has to remember also those nasty slice returns he did, especially on clay and grass, where the opponent expected a deep slice return, only to be bamboozled by Roger with a sublime drop shot. Truly a maestro.

There is a literally video of him out there when he was 9 saying Roger was his fav and another video of him saying he sees his playstyle most like Roger due to their attacking style Energy of Rafa is not a playstyle. The big 3 are all attacking players but attack differently. Novak attacks via never missing being extremely solid and playing the percentages perfectly when he sees an opening he takes it. Some times that's 4 shots sometimes its 15. Rafa attacks via building his shots typically forhand into the backhand of a player over and over again pushing them off court then lining up his forhand and doing a killing blow, he builds pressure like a tidalwave. Roger and by extensive Carlos attack via painting the lines often out of nowhere with high acceleration forhands and winners. They play first strike often not waiting for the opponent to make and error or even waiting for a "chance" to appear they just make one. And while building points of course they do they are pro players it isn't a methodical repeated tidal wave like Rafa.
Unmatched creativity and skill. Roger is the reason I wanted to pick up a racquet. I'm so grateful to have seen him play in person, always unforgettable.
I could be wrong but another shot that Roger pretty much invented was the 100 mph short angle slap forehand where the ball lands inside the service box. Any player nowadays can hit a 100 mph forehand. But only Roger can hit a 100 mph forehand winner and do it with so much whip and spin that the ball ends up landing in the service box. If you dont believe me, check out his 2006 matches against Davydenko and Haas at the Aussie Open. He hit a few insane forehands during those matches that defied the laws of physics. Have literally never seen anyone else hit a forehand like that.
i really like the pinch of arrogance young federer had; he made us and himself think he could do anything from any position so long as he tried, and he did!
I always remember his grace and heady play, but I alway forget his forehand was insanely powerful. Really good server too, despite not being overly fast. I miss him already.

He wasn't as rock solid as Novak and Rafa, and they were a bit stronger mentally than him, but Federer's playing style is just so different and unique from everyone else. NO ONE plays like him. Such a beautiful thing to witness.

tbh, these shots aint that hard(except sabr) but playing them with game iq under pressure in a match is what is truly impressive. I've successfully played the tweener a few times and got the sabr coz my opponent wasn't a big server and twas his second serve
I know a lot of people won’t believe this but James Keothavong ( the guy who umpired the final at the French open earlier this year ) plays at the same club I do and he was on the court beside the one I was playing in, I tried doing a SABR and it was successful!!! He saw it and the guy he was playing said “you must have seen a few of those in your time umpiring” he responded and said “yeah that was a good one” … not a crazy story but yeah that’s my little claim to fame.
SMH. What is masterful is not just "thinking" about doing a trick shot, but making the "decisive and risky" decision to actually do it, do it well, do it with "intention", having it work and be effective. That is what is great about Roger. Overall he is also having fun.
Anyway, beyond all the self gratifying comments shared, I really miss this guy. Maybe he is not the legitimate GOAT, but he does get credit for lifting the ATP to a higher level with his unique and very popular game style. Much like Kyrgios really, in that even though he is not in the GOAT discussion, he won many, many fans through his also unique and popular game style.

This is great but it’s tactical, Federer changes the underlying strategy and assumptions around court positioning, power, patterns of play….and introduced a whole new mental element and focus. Just brilliant!
No one brings a smile on your face while watching them as much as Roger does, for me at least. The game is a wonder watch, at every given time. Facts of the sport are hard truths but what does it for all of us (even the ones not willing to admit to themselves), is that the way this guy moves, plays, shot selects and executes, no person has or perhaps will in a long while.
So at this point I think we can agree that Rafa and Nole are better than him because of the stats but they are by no means greater than Roger. It's not just about this video, it's about everything about Roger, he came in the world of tennis with something completely new and changed this sport in what it is today. I was ready to concede to the other GOATS, but that record of winning 24 straight finals, spending the most consecutive weeks as world number 1, and also never retiring once from a match make me think this is a 3 way tie. Each player has a unique collection of records. When you reach such great heights in different dimensions comparison becomes nearly impossible
There are so much more of these highlights from grand slam tournaments. Federer played a lot of these shots with ease and better than anyone else. The video should have shown how great Federer was able to adapt to unusual and unique situations and improvise or adjust his shots. He is by far the greatest all-court player to have ever played the game. He may have been bested by Djokovic (baseline/hard court GOAT) and Nadal (clay GOAT) but these two simply did not have the all-court versatility that Federer had.

I think his biggest contribution/achievement was not grunting. He showed you can play without making noise and still win. Probably the only current tennis player that doesn't do a walrus grunt.
I always thought Bjorn Borg reinvented tennis. The first top player to hit extreme topspin groundstrokes. The experts used to say that his arm and shoulder muscles would weaken, while the continental grip and flat groundstrokes were still being taught by teaching pros. Now almost every top player plays with extreme topspin and from the baseline. Very rare to see flat groundstrokes and serve and volley players these days.
You will see Federer mentioning Pete being a huge influence for his playing style If you watch his older interviews. Pete did it first but I would still say Federer made it even better. This is from a lifetime Pete fan.

I've seen countless tweeners before Federer played. I personally don't think he changed the game technically speaking. I think he showed how good you had to be to beat him and have success. Everyone had to raise their level dramatically. A a were able to raise enough to have as much success. The rest, moderate success. Everyone had to be way more disciplined and have their huge coaching staff and physios and nutritionists and all that to contend with him

The true way Roger reinvented the game was his dominance and accuracy. He had it all, stellar and economical footwork, imaginative shot selection, COULD NOT MISS when he was in his prime (can’t stress this one enough), developed and owned the greatest forehand in the history of the sport, easily one of the top three serves of all time, turned his one hander from a weakness into a weapon, one tier under sampras level volleying, and never scared of an opponent, all while generating the most Grand Slam victories ever, reached 23 consecutive GRAND SLAM SEMI-FINALS….. let that sink in, while owning the record for longest time spent at number one…..that’s over 4 and half years folks, the runner up is the Jimster at just over 3 years. I haven’t even mentioned the single greatest achievement that sets him apart from every player who ever picked up a racquet. In 1526 Professional singles matches, the man NEVER quit a match, ever. The man just never quit. Seeing him retire was probably the hardest thing he ever had to do, but he did it, and I can say without a doubt, he was the greatest tennis player of all time. Players will be chasing his records for decades, congrats Roger, thanks for all the great memories and the performance of a century.
He transformed his forehand, he transformed his backhand, he adjusted to courts getting faster, he went through the change from best of 5 sets in masters 1000 to best of 3. He should have been irrelevant by the 2010's and instead he won 2 more slams in 2017
He didn't invent any of these shots, but he was the only player of his generation who actually learned from his predecessors. All the others play as if the 1960-1990s never happened. Sad to see 😕

SMH. What is masterful is not just "thinking" about doing a trick shot, but making the "decisive and risky" decision to actually do it, do it well, do it with "intention", having it work and be effective. That is what is great about Roger. Overall he is also having fun.
Anyway, beyond all the self gratifying comments shared, I really miss this guy. Maybe he is not the legitimate GOAT, but he does get credit for lifting the ATP to a higher level with his unique and very popular game style. Much like Kyrgios really, in that even though he is not in the GOAT discussion, he won many, many fans through his also unique and popular game style.

Roger is without a doubt the most amazing talented genius player in tennis history. This videos sums up his game, how smart he is on the court, his ability to turn defense point into attack. Eventhough he may not be the goat in terms of number of slams won but when it comes to style and beauty of tennis, he’s outclassing everybody. I guess even Rafa and Novak must be watching these kind of videos of Roger s points 😃
This is great but it’s tactical, Federer changes the underlying strategy and assumptions around court positioning, power, patterns of play….and introduced a whole new mental element and focus.

God of Tennis
No one brings a smile on your face while watching them as much as Roger does, for me at least. The game is a wonder watch, at every given time. Facts of the sport are hard truths but what does it for all of us (even the ones not willing to admit to themselves), is that the way this guy moves, plays, shot selects and executes, no person has or perhaps will in a long while.
I think Will never rise a player like him! This is almost Perfect!
So at this point I think we can agree that Rafa and Nole are better than him because of the stats but they are by no means greater than Roger. It's not just about this video, it's about everything about Roger, he came in the world of tennis with something completely new and changed this sport in what it is today. In tennis schools they are not studying Nole or Rafa, they are studying Roger. And for this he is the GOAT ❤️❤️❤️.
I was ready to concede to the other GOATS, but that record of winning 24 straight finals, spending the most consecutive weeks as world number 1, and also never retiring once from a match make me think this is a 3 way tie. There are so much more of these highlights from grand slam tournaments. Federer played a lot of these shots with ease and better than anyone else. The video should have shown how great Federer was able to adapt to unusual and unique situations and improvise or adjust his shots.
He is by far the greatest all-court player to have ever played the game. He may have been bested by Djokovic (baseline/hard court GOAT) and Nadal (clay GOAT) but these two simply did not have the all-court versatility that Federer had.

I think his biggest contribution/achievement was not grunting. He showed you can play without making noise and still win. Probably the only current tennis player that doesn't do a walrus grunt.

As someone play badminton and table tennis i'm suprised this kind of technique is new in this game.
I always thought Bjorn Borg reinvented tennis. The first top player to hit extreme topspin groundstrokes. The experts used to say that his arm and shoulder muscles would weaken, while the continental grip and flat groundstrokes were still being taught by teaching pros. Now almost every top player plays with extreme topspin and from the baseline. Very rare to see flat groundstrokes and serve and volley players these days.

I personally don't think he changed the game technically speaking. I think he showed how good you had to be to beat him and have success.
Everyone had to raise their level dramatically. A a were able to raise enough to have as much success. The rest, moderate success. Everyone had to be way more disciplined and have their huge coaching staff and physios and nutritionists and all that to contend with him

Um, respectfully no. Title is not correct you could maybe make the case with the tweener shots, but that’s not reinventing tennis. Most of this is re-inventing the Federer game with age. The true way Roger reinvented the game was his dominance and accuracy. He had it all, stellar and economical footwork, imaginative shot selection, COULD NOT MISS when he was in his prime (can’t stress this one enough), developed and owned the greatest forehand in the history of the sport, easily one of the top three serves of all time, turned his one hander from a weakness into a weapon, one tier under sampras level volleying, and never scared of an opponent, all while generating the most Grand Slam victories ever, reached 23 consecutive GRAND SLAM SEMI-FINALS….. let that sink in, while owning the record for longest time spent at number one…..that’s over 4 and half years folks, the runner up is the Jimster at just over 3 years. I haven’t even mentioned the single greatest achievement that sets him apart from every player who ever picked up a racquet. In 1526 Professional singles matches, the man NEVER quit a match, ever. The man just never quit. Seeing him retire was probably the hardest thing he ever had to do, but he did it, and I can say without a doubt, he was the greatest tennis player of all time. Players will be chasing his records for decades, congrats Roger, thanks for all the great memories and the performance of a century.
He transformed his forehand, he transformed his backhand, he adjusted to courts getting faster, he went through the change from best of 5 sets in masters 1000 to best of 3. He should have been irrelevant by the 2010's and instead he won 2 more slams in 2017
