However, some of the details are missing and I will try to provide them based on my understanding. All figures quoted here are ball park figures as I have no way of verifying these information. First, let me correct a minor issue in the video (@4:00) which states that Liziqi's rise is riding on the expansion of MCN. That is not correct. Liziqi's rise is riding on the expansion of video contents generation and viewing in China, not because of MCN. However, the MCN company did help her. There is a third company involved here - in late 2020, a third company expressed their interested in investing ~1-2 billion RMB (about 12% of the company) in the MCN company solely because of Liziqi's brand and its commercial potential. This company was later identified as byteDance, the parent company of DouYin (the Chinese TikTok). ByteDance realized that it needed the person behind the brand also for its financial success. So, this investment would need Liziqi's agreement. After a lengthy period of negotiation, Liziqi finally said "no" as she has sensed something was wrong and as she mentioned in an interview with CCTV4 that "it is a double edged sword for associating the brand with the highest commercial value", meaning that eventually, capital will want to subvert the brand for its own purpose. She wanted to "protect this name". As she stopped posting video, the MCN tried to apply pressure by cutting her access to her official channel account. She responded by going to court. ByteDance then withdrew the offer. The MCN tried to make peace with Liziqi just before the court appearance to no avail. In late Oct 2021, the court sided with Liziqi and gave the Liziqi brand back to her and "froze" the 51% owned by the MCN company. (I don't understand what "froze" means in practical terms here.) For the next two years, the MCN company brought 2 lawsuits against Liziqi on behalf of the MCN's investors. Also, in these two years, the MCN company tried: 1. to sign on other content providers to try to replace Liziqi 2. to market their own brand of merchandize (instead of the Liziqi brand). It failed on both counts. Their brand of merchandize sales volume was only a small fraction of the Liziqi brand. After two years, the MCN company realized that it needed Liziqi to survive. On the other hand, Liziqi did not depend on her income from the MCN company. Apparently, Liziqi received distribution from YT based on advertisement directly in excess of USD$100,000 a month. Certainly, she lost quite a lot of money, but I believed that Liziqi valued the name "Liziqi" much more than the money she would otherwise collect. I believed that the resolution on Dec 2022 was the best outcome. However, it also meant that Liziqi has to staff up and operate her Ziqi Cultural company to manage her IP. Finally, I would say that it is disingenuous for the MCN company to use operating loss of 40 mil (RMB) as an excuse to swindle the money from Liziqi. Note that the operating loss was due to "investment" in factories and other channels to manufacture, promote, and selling activities for the Liziqi brand. These are "investments" which would produce "profits" in the future. These are known as FV (or future values) for these investments. In hypothetical terms, a 1 million $ investment will result in $1 million $ return each for the next ten years. These FVs (10 million $ total) need to be taken into account to evaluate Liziqi's contribution to the wealth of the MCN company. For financial purpose, NPV (Net Present Value) was commonly used. Thus, Liziqi's compensation should be based on a fraction of this value. Operating deficit are common especially during the growth phase of the company. The company will go to the banks or investors to borrow $ to financial the expansion. This monies should not be taken out of Liziqi's compensation. The MCN company knows this and use NPV to justify its share price. That is why byteDance was willing to pay 1-2 billion dollars for 12% of the company. If byteDance transaction has gone through, Mr. L's worth in the MCN company would be valued at ~2 billion dollars. In short, Mr. L has pocketed all of Liziqi's contribution to the company. Hope Liziqi returns soon.
