Tormek Synthetic Wheel Vs Leather opinion and my new monitor.

  • I have had some time now to use the synthetic and the leather wheel and for my setup using CBN a lot I’m happier with the leather , but to be clear I’m happier with other stropping and honing methods over either Tormek Wheel. I show in this video a situation I have run into multiple times with the synthetic wheel on it’s own as a method to remove the Burr. I also checked my book by Dr Vadim and realized he ran into the same situation his solution was different than mine as he was a fan of Rock Hard Felt and also paper wheels. My current solution is just stropping on my 1x30 but I’m going to test some paper wheels and I have also been testing a felt belt with Alcohol base diamond 💎 spray as we all know there are many ways to sharpen and remove burrs. If you have run into this and come up with your own solution please share it.

Another interesting video -- thanks. Something you might want to try, which has given me great results: go straight to the leather belt from the CBN wheel, but do a couple passes at 1-2° higher than the sharpening angle and then a pass or two at the sharpening angle. That's consistently giving me results in the 65-80 BESS range.
With the relatively high hrc that Shun uses I'll do the high pass closer to 1° above the sharpening angle. With softer steels on German knives, around +1.5°. And with cheapo grocery store knives, +2°.
As a final step I'll usually do a couple passes on a free-hanging denim strop (cut from a pair of old Levis :-) ) loaded with Flitz polish. That denim is about 4" x 18" with one end duct taped to my table and the other end held in a spring clamp.
And here's something to try with that wire edge from the synthetic wheel: go straight from that wheel to a hanging denim or leather strop and do a couple quick passes, medium pressure, at around 40-45°. Then go to the BESS tester and prepare to be amazed!

At what angle do you strop on a hanging denim at the final step?

    • @BladeLabMiami
      @BladeLabMiami Рік тому

@@blggtavus I'm doing my best to hit the sharpening angle, but since it's a pretty flexible media, it's really just an approximation.

@@BladeLabMiami I see. And what will happen when we strop a knife at 40-45 degrees on pasted denim? I’ve tried it before and what I got was a smooth edge. I didn’t try cutting anything as I went straight to leather strop so I don’t know if it was sharp or not. I guess it gets a surprisingly low Bess score?

Agree with 3D Anvil above. Most mainstream knives need a differential honing process depending on steel. A rock hard felt wheel with 1micron diamonds at a slightly higher angle (0.4 to 2.4 degrees depending on steel) prior to a final clean up on a bare leather strop at exact angle usually completely removes a positive burr type. Higher end knives or super hard steels require progressive honing at exact sharpening angles and definitely need diamonds to remove the burr.

Interesting video, Paul. Switching subjects-in one of your videos you mentioned that you’re 5’8”. I’m a few inches shorter at 5’5”. The Tormek stand for my T8 is too high for me to comfortably use. How tall are the tables under your T8s? I have the idea that I should look for a table that’s about 3” lower than yours. Does that make sense? Do you know of a good way to calculate the ideal table height? I’m thinking of something along the lines of measuring hand height when in working position.

Have any of you been able to get a Kangaroo strop not easy to find here in the USA and very expensive I just have a small one about 1 “ x5” on aluminum backing …🧐hmm maybe I’ll pull that out it’s for an inexpensive sharpener but it works

@@harrisonaero so according to what I have ready it pretty coarse the small one I have came from Etsy and I can’t really vouch for its authenticity I have a client who make’s hand made leather goods very high end who has given me some nice scraps of good leather and I have used that and it gives me about the same results but apparently there tails are pretty course leather. I have some friends in Australia maybe Ill see if they can get me some Roo tail I think it’s regulated by the government now the hunting of Kangaroo 🦘 and I think that’s why its not so easy to get an entire tail strop

We appreciate any testing & hints you provide us, we all take our chances & buy something it's just nice to have someone's else's perspective.
When we do the math . . . a continuous cutting edge has about 2x more surface area than a toothed edge of the same width.
To my way of thinking, this is likely why a well refined edge often requires more downforce & feels duller than a toothy edge.
Curious about the Bess Tester. Have you ever found a chart providing a correlation between width of the cutting edge & Bess Tester scores ?

I am not a professional sharpener and haven’t used a Tormek yet. (Planning to buy a T8)
With all humility try stropping at an angle, alternating from tip to heel and heel to tip in an effort to have stropping directions nearly perpendicular to each other.
    This may mitigate the problem.
    I will appreciate your feedback.

I have landed on the variable speed grinder with a round leather flap wheel is the very best for me a close second is 1x30 leather wheel with Tormeks paste at around 1400 RPM. Both of these have worked far better for me than the Tormek wheel. The Tormek wheel just takes a lot more time at because of the slower 90 RPMs great for shaping not as good for honing.

So I mostly use my Jet low speed grinder for cleavers that are chipped and need a lot of material removed. I have a 180 CBN and a 350 CBN wheel on it with a Kodiac mount from Wood Turner’s Wonders and a Tormek jig attachment so I can grind on it with all my Tormek Jigs - Jet makes awesome grinders and with the centering washers from WTW it’s really an awesome grinder runs super smooth and quite. I rarely use it for knives.

I have been testing the felt belt with 3 micron alcohol based diamond spray and it appears to be the strongest burr removal option I have. it’s really impressive at getting off stubborn burrs not sure it’s great for final finishing but for initial stubborn burr created by CBN my testing so far has had really good results. I have to run some more knives through to be sure and do some angle testing to see if + 1 or 2 degrees improves it’s performance
