Oasis overrated ?? What's the story morning glory was one of the most successful albums of all time and don't look back in anger and wonderwall was voted 1st and second in British greatest songs . Can't say they are overrated when they had success like that
Casper Jean Rimbaud Very true but A. Dylan had the lyrical skills to back it up and B. The difference is that Dylan stood for something, a counterpart to the mainstream commercial music etc.
Yes, they had success but will it be everlasting! Hmmm. sorry but whilst they are okay and I mean okay as I can think of a lot of British bands that the next generation will probably be listening to over them in the next 50 years or so. Yes, they are or should I say 'were' a good band, but they are not to be put in the same league as bands like The Beach Boys who constantly changed their music over the years and had a great influence on not only bands like The Beatles but also various heavy metal bands who, whilst not being 'into' their music appreciated what they brought to the music scene.
I honestly don't even know who tf Noel Gallagher is, but Pet Sounds has some fucking amazing music and is a lot different in comparison to some other Beach Boys sounds. All the work put into it and the variety of instruments used come together to make a very solid album in my opinion.
Noel is a dolt and wouldn't recognise quality if it smashed him over the head. Yes, he sold over 80 million records and it went to his head. He knows deep down he'll never be respected critically or write anything as good as Pet Sounds. It's why he's so bitter and defensive. His band was the biggest in the world for a while, but will never come close to achieving sonically what the Beach boys did...
@dlovas Fact is that they where more popular in the UK. Their albums always did better overseas. Take the 20/20 album for example, no 68 in the US number 3 in the UK. Wouldn't it be nice: no 8 in the US no 2 in the UK. The numbers speak for themselves.
He's just just got a hard on for England. Anyone with any musical sense at all would recognize the musical ingenuity of the Wilson Brothers (and cousin + friend) compared to the catchy pop rock ability of Oasis.
who is Noel Gallagher in musical history? a complete Nobody. Sure you can say Beach Boys music is maybe often too soft, if you dont like that. But anyway it was great music. Brian Wilson is one of the best songwriters in modern music history. Period.
@btkrick it's hard to find any kind of music that doesn't have roots in a beatles song, even electronic music or punk. the beatles were the first pop group who used: loops, break-beat rhythms, backward played music, 8 and then then 16 tracks recording method. they created a fusion between art music and pop. they worked with orchestras and used synthesizer, exotic instruments and they made them popular.
Pet Sounds is not well known in the world of music only because of its harmonies, its arrangements and its lyrics really stand the test of time (Here Today and I Just Wasn't Made For These Times are a perfect example of pure lyrical perfection); their unreleased masterpiece SMiLE took Pop to another level with a project that features Classical and Experimental Music influences giving birth to a new genre (Art Pop) and creating something that was totally daring and ahead of its time.
And the instrumentals like let's go for a while are pure perfection. Noel will never close to writing a song as brilliant, and he knows it. It's why he's bitter and defensive.
when bob dylan says they should donate noel gallagher's ear to the smithsonian/he inspires the beatles, then i might give his opinion an ounce of credit, but lets be honest people, thats not going to happen is it
I have to agree. I'm 66 and never understood the surf music and the Beach boys fame and ditched the Beatles for the Stones at 18 and as Stones to smoking it led on to Punk and Alternative 😛😜❗
@dlovas they wrote abstract lyrics and used sectional structure instead of 'verse-chore-verse'. they even wrote avant-garde compositions and a heavy metal song, before the genre 'metal' was invented.... they made the first music video, they played the first stadium gigs, changed the face of pop and fashion, fought for human rights and their last movie could be the first reality show… etc, etc… this is what happened at their last SEVEN years!
No. When you talk about bands with limited talent, like Oasis, you can say sound, as in, "They repeat the same sound in every song they write." The Beach Boys, a band with talent, are capable of multiple musical sounds.
For your info I've got quite a lot of knowledge on music - ranging from 40's - today! I'm a DJ so part of my job is knowing your music and knowing what music your audience likes and details about it. I have stated that the comment is IMO so what I say is what I think!
Well yeah, I'm mainly referring to the released singles. And maybe that's what Noel was talking about too. My point was that people need to not only be open to new opinions and ideas, but also see where he's coming from, before they start talking about him being "wrong" or just being a "jerk-off" or whatever else they wanna say.
@btkrick i really don't wanna be offensive but what's your definition for a "good band". mine (if we are talking about pop) is something like this: "able to be innovative, experimental and popular at the same time". i think the beatles did more for pop esthetic than anybody else, and they were more popular then anybody else too. but whatever is your definition i will appreciate that.
Beach boys music was created by combining the Four Freshman with Chuck Berry. What do you THINK it is going to sound like? Brian's favorite pastime was to come home after school and play 4 freshman records and learn all the harmonies and then teach them to the others. They were hugely successful at it and I believe they had 40 songs in the top ten.
I respect Noel, he always been an underrated singer-songwriter to this day...but The Beach Boys are really great, if you just get past the do-wop stuff like Little surfer girl or Be true to your school
He probably won't think they are good. Noel has a very limited taste in music and it's pretty reflective in oasis songs. That is why oasis had only 2-3 good albums and even they sound pretty much alike. Nothing out there or experimental or outside of his little bubble.
@@saritajoshi1737 Noel said in a recent interview he's been enjoying The Beach Boys recently. In fairness to Noel, The Beach boys are probably not part of the cultural fabric in North England or Ireland, like it was for an American kid like me. Meaning Noel didn't grow up listening to them. Honestly, even at 40 or 50 years old, no one has fully discovered all musical genres... Plus our tastes change. I used to like metal as teenager, now I barely listen to it. Oasis is a band I liked as a teenager, now I appreciate them more, along with Noel's solo stuff(and Liams). My perception of them just shifted a bit now. Many people(Americans mainly) only know Oasis for wonderwall, champagne supernova or DLBIA...but they actually have many solid b-sides and deeper album tunes. With Beach Boys, i either LOVE or really dislike their songs. There's no inbetween. The constant 'surfing themes' becomes a turn off at some point. We know the beach boys became more than a surf band. Noel just finally dug deeper, probably
How many chords are there in Oasis songs, instruments?? To be fair to Noel this interview was years ago. He’s probably grown up now and can appreciate music structures. Brian was 23 when he started to write Pet Sounds and all ready had 10 albums behind him. I think Noel was a football hooligan with Man City and later a roadie for Inspiral Carpets. I guess make your own mind up.
you can't really take what they say as you hear it though, that's why they spawn headlines from their print interviews because it's doesn't take their manc sarcasm into effect.
Well I don't think they would have pushed themselves as far as they did with those albums if they didn't hear Pet Sounds. That was a wake up call to McCartney.
I know everyone is allowed to have their own opinions, but I'm sorry, that is an EXTREMELY uneducated opinion. "Barber Shop"? Sure, the Beach Boys were inspired by Barber Shop music, which is where a lot of their genius harmonies stem from, but to say that the Beach Boys is simply a "Barber Shop" group is like saying the Beatles are only a "Yeah, yeah, yeah" group. The Beach Boys inspired generations of musicians and artists, INCLUDING the Beatles. There's a reason Paul McCartney loves their music so much. The likes of Paul, John Lennon, and Elton John have said that "Pet Sounds" makes them cry from its pure beauty, and if it wasn't for "Pet Sounds," there would be no "Sgt. Pepper." Heck, Rolling Stone ranks "Pet Sounds" number 2 in the greatest albums ever made, second only to "Sgt. Pepper." You don't get the title of "America's Band" for being a "Barber Shop" band.
Noel Gallagher cannot afford to say this. Having come from a band with the most repetitive sound ever. Sure some Oasis songs are ok on their own but an album is a drag to sit through. Pet Sounds is the complete opposite, it works entirely as an album not just a scatter of "ok" songs here and there.
Thanks James! I have three triple aluminum albums...check the shelves at Wal- Mart. Im huge in New Guinea. I just didn't like how he acted disgusted with them....cocky ass. I just don't like how cocky he is....especially when speaking about a genius legend like Brian Wilson. Thats all
A-1 .He drags out a Jim Hendrix quote ie, '' Barbershop Quartet '' then says people only like them because '' Paul likes them '' ..not like people haven't got the intelligence to know what they like/dislike .( Jimi wasn't dissing the BB back then , he was just being humorous when he said quote '' '' I guess we wont be hearing no barbershop music '' when the BB ( unwisely ) pulled out of playing the Monetary Music Festival in 1967 .
This is cool!...its funny i remember one time around 2000 that noel said he hated three bands that were selling lotta records that year...Backstreet Boys, Limp Bizkit and blink 182 LOL
If Brian Wilson put half as much into his music as he did of his obsession of harmonies and Paul McCartney, the competition between The Beach Boys and The Beatles would be much closer. Until then, their produce stands for itself and, as Gallagher says, is nothing more than surf induced barber shop quartet music.
@dlovas I was answering to your statement that the Beach Boys didn't do it for the british audience. That's why I showed you that they were more popular overseas than in their homeland. I'm not saying that the Beach Boys were a better band or whatever. I'm actually a bigger Beatles fan, Beach boys are my number 2. But you really can't really compare them two, they are two very different bands that are magnificent in their own way. Still my favourite album is Pet sounds, Abbey rd comes 2d
Noel really talks a lot of stuff about others but one group he has never really talked about much in detail; the Stone Roses. ONlY short clips as such. I've never heard him say anything bad about Ian Brown or John Squire. That says much to me.
Pet Sounds inspired St Peppers but before that, Revolver had inspired Pet Sounds. So it seems that The Beatles inspired themselves through The Beach Boys

No I'm comparing the standards of the same aspects of music they both share.
Pet Sounds influenced both Sgt. Pepper AND Revolver. I wouldn't call that "bullshit".
and Rubber Soul influenced Pet Sounds. So what?
sources?
Imagine not having written I just wasn't made for these times and criticising the man who did 🙄 you could not make it up
@maalbe987 Liam used the same strategy for Beady Eye
Mark Hoppus was trying to say that he loved the Beach Boys, specifically Pet Sounds, but Noel kept interrupting.
He said in 1997 he didn't like The Doors either. Opinions change I guess.
Ah my God..He's went right down in my estimation now!
I think John Lennon also called "God Only Knows" the greatest song ever written.
@dlovas Fact is that they where more popular in the UK.
Their albums always did better overseas. Take the 20/20 album for example, no 68 in the US number 3 in the UK. Wouldn't it be nice: no 8 in the US no 2 in the UK.
The numbers speak for themselves.
@btkrick Have you ever listened to any other song by Oasis besides Wonderwall?
Noel won't have to worry about anyone buying multiple copies of his solo albums.
I love The Beach Boys, The Beatles and Oasis...but Brian Wilson was an innovator and tried new ideas, as did the Beatles. Shaddup Noel!
Who is he?
I love the beach boys
Noel is a genius. Brian is a
God…..
when bob dylan says they should donate noel gallagher's ear to the smithsonian/he inspires the beatles, then i might give his opinion an ounce of credit, but lets be honest people, thats not going to happen is it
who are oasis ?
I like Noel and I love Oasis, but he's smoking some midichlorians with this hot take of his.
Me and the boys when somebody nobody knows about tries to make an educated opinion on something he knows nothing about
I have to agree. I'm 66 and never understood the surf music and the Beach boys fame and ditched the Beatles for the Stones at 18 and as Stones to smoking it led on to Punk and Alternative 😛😜❗
@dlovas they wrote abstract lyrics and used sectional structure instead of 'verse-chore-verse'. they even wrote avant-garde compositions and a heavy metal song, before the genre 'metal' was invented....
they made the first music video, they played the first stadium gigs, changed the face of pop and fashion, fought for human rights and their last movie could be the first reality show…
etc, etc…
this is what happened at their last SEVEN years!
My point was that people need to not only be open to new opinions and ideas, but also see where he's coming from, before they start talking about him being "wrong" or just being a "jerk-off" or whatever else they wanna say.
you could not be more correct.....btw...what is OASIS? is it important?
Pet sounds is such a gem, even Lennon loved the Beach Boys you cave-man
How many chords are there in Oasis songs, instruments?? To be fair to Noel this interview was years ago. He’s probably grown up now and can appreciate music structures. Brian was 23 when he started to write Pet Sounds and all ready had 10 albums behind him. I think Noel was a football hooligan with Man City and later a roadie for Inspiral Carpets. I guess make your own mind up.
“Barber Shop Quartet” is hilarious.
that's funny, I don't remember barbershop quartets using theremins, cellos, saxophones, coke bottles, bells, whistles...but maybe that's just me
To be fair, noel has since said in a recent interview that he likes quite a few beach boys songs now.
you can't really take what they say as you hear it though, that's why they spawn headlines from their print interviews because it's doesn't take their manc sarcasm into effect.
The irony is Noel is trying to as mad as the beach boys later output
I'm guessing from the comments that this is a lot of people's first rodeo with Noel trashing popular things
I never did like Noel Gallaghers music. The Beach Boys .
started back in 1962 and still going for 58 years.
Please forgive him. He can't even tell Brian Wilson from Mike Love.
🤣🤣🤣
Noel Gallagher cannot afford to say this. Having come from a band with the most repetitive sound ever. Sure some Oasis songs are ok on their own but an album is a drag to sit through. Pet Sounds is the complete opposite, it works entirely as an album not just a scatter of "ok" songs here and there.
So well said
Thanks James!
Until then, their produce stands for itself and, as Gallagher says, is nothing more than surf induced barber shop quartet music.
they were next to the beatles alphabetically till beady eye arrived
The fact that he deleted his post proves a lot :P
@dlovas I was answering to your statement that the Beach Boys didn't do it for the british audience. That's why I showed you that they were more popular overseas than in their homeland.
I'm not saying that the Beach Boys were a better band or whatever. I'm actually a bigger Beatles fan, Beach boys are my number 2. But you really can't really compare them two, they are two very different bands that are magnificent in their own way.
Still my favourite album is Pet sounds, Abbey rd comes 2d
his head looks like the alien head skull that was found in egypt
Album sales
Beach Boys- 100 million plus
Oasis-40 million
Noel Gallagher solo
My favorite Beach Boy album is "Pet Sound"
Noel really talks a lot of stuff about others but one group he has never really talked about much in detail; the Stone Roses. ONlY short clips as such. I've never heard him say anything bad about Ian Brown or John Squire. That says much to me.
it's funny because i've heard paul mccartney, keith richards, and pete townshend all say how much they hate oasis.
live forever
Most overrated band... says the guy from Oasis lol
it is hard to understand the genius of the beach boys when you're not a real musician ... you'll get there buddy :-)
thats noel's kind of humor, he's actually really nice. watch the graham norton interview
Pet Sounds inspired St Peppers but before that, Revolver had inspired Pet Sounds. So it seems that The Beatles inspired themselves through The Beach Boys
The Beach Boys were inspired by Rubber Soul, thats what started it.
noel is great, shame some people don't get him. love blink and NG highflying birds
That response was hilarious...can't believe people did not get his joke
