It's so strange, realizing years ago that picking up a game I've never played would lead me down such a journey that was created by a man who genuinely loves what he does, and puts his heart into it. Every question he has put into a game to make me take a step back and ask myself that same question and apply it to real life experiences has been nothing short of therapeutic, as well as some of the most difficult times I've had to face. It brings me such joy knowing that the person behind the questions and stories is someone I can truly look up to as a human being in general. I'm seriously just proud of him and the journey he has put on himself to create such art and philosophies.

@dondonrv I definitely don't think I'd still be gaming if I didn't discover Dark Souls in 2011.I was growing fatigued with the same old stuff the market was flooded with. There have certainly been some incredible games since then, ala Witcher 3 or the recent Resident Evil games. But nothing holds a candle to Miyazaki. He changed the entire gaming landscape with his work. He literally created his own subgenre.

I think it’s so telling how much he lauds his team & development crew as equals compared to someone like Kojima who slaps his name into every possible area of development & tries to hoard credit. Miyazaki is a true auteur of our time. A creative without ego, doing it for the sake of art & culture

    • @pw6002
      @pw6002 10 місяців тому +3

It would be telling if Kojima was a loser… which he is not.
Both are genius game designers and have already left a deep impact in their art.
The only thing is that one of them may be a better person than the other.

Miyazaki's design philosophy really shows the level of passion and care for the product and all else.
He is a true artist compared to most game designers.
It wven bleeds into monetization, there isnt any.
Elden ring for example. You pay the standard price and get a game more filled than anything else, no microtransactions, nothing.
He treats the player with complete trust and that in and of itself is why we trust anything with hos name attached.
These videos are of such amazing quality. Thank you for that.
    Miyazaki-esque, if you will

Dark Souls one always struck me as having moments in the game where I could feel that I was essentially looking at concept art.
    Firelink shrine
    The Depts
    Anor Londo
    Blight Town
    Artorias's grave.
Over and over I felt that I was looking at a painting only it was simply the game. They really blew me away with how often I felt that the artist's work was somehow captured exactly and transported to his world.

They can't 😂 you can't make "genius artist", they're self made. As a company, you're either lucky enough to hire one and buy smart enough to give them creative freedom, or you waste a lot of resources trying to "cook one in a lab" ... And that never works.

It speaks volumes about Miyazaki and his design philosophy regrading Sekiro. That was a game that I bounced right off of when it came up due to its different mechanics and brutal difficulty, only to rediscover it last month and absolutely become obsessed with it. The fact he had trust and knew it was also time for his team to experiment with the idea of leading the charge themselves probably has a lot to do with the quality of that title.

It must be a real awesome experience to see his ideas be realized with the aid of the designers and artists. I bet they have to work a lot to meet his standards. But for sure it must be worth it if they are invested in growing in their craft.

About total direction, if you've ever work on a slightly more ambitious artpiece/project by yourself which took you a long time, you'll know how much distractions you get along the way that might influence how you perceive your own work and ultimately caused you to make changes. Imagine having to work in a huge project like making a video game, with so many people at the helm having their own concepts and making decisions, how easily and quickly the whole thing would become a chaotic mess.
A clear and firm direction is very important, even if you learned something along the way that tells you that it might not came out as good or ideal, just incorporate that new knowledge on your next project instead.

This was a very good video. You can really see his evolution as a total director. His games really have got better as the money bags have allowed him to cook.
It got me thinking that I kind of wish Miyazaki could officially finish Dark Souls or add the archstone world for Demon’s Souls. I know this is something Miyazaki won’t do.
It comes back to a critique video of Bluepoint Demon’s Souls that I watched. I was flabbergasted that someone made an hour video on why they preferred the original Demon’s Souls.
Seeing the care that Miyazaki takes with Total Direction really cements my view that the original Demon’s Souls is probably better. Especially when I think these games are art. It is like changing the makeup on the Mona de Lisa or changing the color of a Picasso.
I have started another playthrough of Dark Souls on Switch. Lost Izalith unfinished area I was always like I wish this area could be finished by Miyazaki. Now I can’t help but think of him acting out the legs of the weird rock leg demons.
I also don’t really play modded Souls games. It just kind of changes the thing I fell in love with.
Thanks again for the great video.

I’d love Miyazaki to help design a Batman game. His Gotham would be so epic. DSIII Irythil is one of my favorite areas in a game ever. Every time I get to that part of the game I just see a near perfect Gotham.

My takeaway from this is that Miyazaki, even before becoming FromSoft President, probably has some persuasive skills, considering that he obsessed over the details, and yet be able to deliver games with consistent quality even with the tight schedules. It's very challenging to work in an environment with a boss/game director that exerts such control, and yet he is able to pull it off. Impressive! He'd be an excellent case study for project management workshops imho.

Miyazaki is a genius who has touched the lives of so many people. Just look at how many videos there are about Dark Souls helping with depression.
Elegance, and beauty. I like that description. I'd also like to add "weight and meaning" to the list. His games have a gravitas that translates into daily life and make the world seem richer and more mysterious, somehow.
Wonderful documentary, thoughtful and enlightening. Thank you.

Miyazaki-san is an auteur in the truest sense. His artistic approach is one of a kind and his work is inimitable.
I also think it’s very telling about his character and what he’s like as a leader when he can be so deeply involved in the creative process and still have the projects turn out so well. Usually when a boss is so involved in the details it becomes a toxic and stressful environment which leads to poor outcomes.

Western companies don't understand that you need an all-powerful game director with eccentric sensibilities to actually make a good game. Kojima, Shinji Mikami, Miyazaki, etc. are all dictators, artistically, along with every single great film director and philharmonic conductor.

When you play a Miyazaki game and do your deep dives after, you're left reeling at a mind such as his. Then you play Elden Ring and start learning about it (no one seems to really know anything concrete about ER) and you realize that as much depth as Dark Souls has in its story, it pales in comparison. I think this comes from George RR Martin.

Dude your videos are absolutely phenomenal. I've enjoyed all of them and can't wait for the Elden Ring one.
I hope you don't mind me saying this, but you have a couple slides that are attributing quotes from Daisuke Satake to Miyazaki. Your VO is correct in saying "Satake said..." but the slide itself still says "Miyazaki says" and has his photo. I know how much work goes into these videos, so I really don't hope you feel like I'm putting any of your work down. Just trying to offer help for next time. To that end, if you ever need help capturing gameplay footage, I am more than happy to help!
