The only time you should ever put on your hazrd lights is when the rain is so blinding you can't see in front of you or be able to see the car in front of you. I've driven in some healthy nasty Texas storms before and have yet to see a person get pulled over for warning other motorists about hazardous weather. The rule of thumb is: If the weather is too dangerous to not drive without some sort of warning to let others know about the impending danger then turn on the hazards.
Correct, except for one detail... Six steps vs. five. Count them. ;-) That's the easiest distinguishing feature. CSX's 53 Dash-9s are actually hybrids. Dash-9 guts on a Dash-8 chassis.
Not in Florida. It's illegal to drive with the flashers on. When drivers turn on flashers they simply confuse everyone else, it's then impossible to recognize brake lights. If you feel then need the drive with flashers, then you should pull off the road!! Told you it was a pet peeve. :-))
It was a pet pee for me too as a semi truck driver and a state fire equipment driver trainer. Absolutely no private owned fire fighter vehicles shall respond to a scene with four way flashers. If you dont have red lights and siren with a valid state certificate, then drive in the flow of normal traffic so you dont make a larger crash scene to add to the other scene.
Yes, I really need to get over there and do that. You're absolutely right, that service may not be there too many more years. When the weather cools off a little, I'll put it in my plans. One Friday morning, I'll try to catch it leaving Yeoman and chase it to Clearwater and down the peninsula. Thanks! DH
this happens on occaision where a large order of a certain model is being completed, but the new model becomes available, so they will finish the order with a hybrid... This is speculation, because I didn't have time at this moment to look it up. Just sharing a thought.
Is there a chance you could, when you’re in the area of this wye and overpass, could you do a few seconds of video if what this area looks like now-standing as close as possible to the spot you shot the last part of this video from 11 years ago? It would be interesting and fun to see how much here-and some of your other spots you shoot-have changed in the last decade or so...
I'm not too much of an authority on ATCS. I installed mine by using the step-by-step in the ATCS wiki. That's about as much help as I can be. Just go to the YahooGroup, atcsmon and use their resources.
No idea. I would not imagine they're bringing out the standard cabs from storage, unless they're trying to use them up and get them off the rosters. Just a guess.
Awesome work, Danny! The AC power on 453 is for E109. That's a sporadically scheduled Empty Coal Train that runs with empty coal hoppers from Cemex by my house. It should be by you tomorrow early in the morning, that is, if it runs tonight. I should be able to notify you and the group if those two AC units are seen tonight. Tolga
Thanks! You're kidding, right? No, that's all my voice. the day they make a program that can do real voiceover and dialog narration is the day I'm out of business.
Hi,Danny H., on a CSX diesel engine, what is a PTC stands for,why I'm asking this because it shut down a CSX diesels train. What is the purpose for this code and the dispatches never hear it either?????
Danny, that was a great video overall! Of particular interest was the trip on Interstate 4 to Lakeland in the heavy rain; you mentioned a great point. Way too many times I have seen people use their 4-way flashers while in motion; that is very dangerous and - as you mentioned - illegal. I got to agree with you 100 percent. You got the best train videos - keep up the good work!
As always Danny, excellent job! As mentioned, the AC power on Q453 was for E109, empty Miami - Erwin, TN coal train. The two Geeps must have been cut off somewhere on the Auburndale Sub since I didn't see them on 453 later that night in Ft. Lauderdale. Keep up the great work!
Danny, Yet another great video. I absolutely love how you intertwine your narration and the scanner transmissions within your videos. It is extremely informative. Eric Lanctot
@CSCtalent I really don't remember them at all. I know that engine types, heritage and such are important to a lot of railfans and that's why I try to include that info when possible. I've collected diesel spotting books over the years and roster lists from the Yahoo Groups I'm on. Those are my main sources. DH
Danny, Great video as usual...loved the shots at Coleman. Back in 1988 when CSX made the decision to abandon the line south of Coleman to Auburndale I had taken my cousin to Gainesville...this was my first trip to Florida. I got shots there at Coleman of both tracks still in use and that high signal there today had 3 targets then. At the time I had no idea of the pending abandonment...I stayed and got some Time exposure shots of those same signals...it was neat. Soon after..abandonment!!!!
I wondered if you ever considered coming over to Pinellas and trying to catch what is left of the Clearwater sub. I realize you work for a living, but I would love to see you document O701-O702 as it makes a trip down to St. Pete in the event the day comes that service ends. There is CY in Largo, the P. Park Station, the old Amtrak station at 38th Ave. and the reverse move with the caboose down in St. Pete. It usually runs Tues and Fri mornings. Just an idea.
Dan, you have a very good understanding voice, and your videos are great. I rate them right up there with Pentrex with no dought. In fact keep them coming. Len. Pottstown,PA.
Sweet!!! Another excellent distantsignal production. I also predict thet George Jenkins Blvd. overpass will become very popular with railfans thanks to you of course. ;-) I recall my buddy, Tim (FloridaTrainKid), catching Q453 that night in Ft. Lauderdale without the GeePs that I believe were set out at Mildred and Dyer.
Hey Danny - I have a question. I know this video is from 2009, but I have from time to time seen the trains parked at the Geroge Jenkins Parkway, do you have any idea when is the best time to catchem them now a days?
Q452 comes north out of Miami in the mornings. They're often right there at the Jenkins overpass for the crew change. So sometime between daylight and 9AM is a good bet.
Danny, you are right: The tracks end at 7 Av N in St. Petersburg marked with a stop sign letting trains know that they cannot proceed further. The Clearwater Sub went as far south as 1 Av S and Martin Luther King St S right by Tropicana Field, then CSX truncated the line at 7 Av N as it stands today. The St. Petersburg Times is the customer that gets its newsprint via CSX. If service is stopped, will the line be saved for proposed commuter rail? Hopefully the line should be saved somehow.
Well, sometimes (for example, in fog, or other circumstances that make an operator drive way, Way, WAY below the speed limit) they make sense and aren't confusing to other rational drivers.
Sorry had to stop what I was saying in NY State you can’t stand on a Bridge and take photo’s of Train’s . I found out the Hard way. D & H Enforce’s that Rule.
Yes, its a phenomenon called groupthink. When you put a large mass of people together like a large city they tend to not think for themselves. You end up with crazy laws and lots of bad decisions.
I always turn on my 4-ways in situations I feel are low visibility. It's easy to misjudge speed in those conditions. To my knowledge, that's not illegal in NY. Seems odd it would be illegal anywhere.
Hi Danny, A couple questions: what's the strangest thing you've ever seen on a train down that way? And how do you know (aside from auto racks and flatcars) what a train is carrying? E.g. the contents of tank cars, boxcars, etc?
Good vid lot's of ppl don't know the law of turning your lights on and not the flashers
George Jenkins, Founder of Publix Supermarkets, which the home office is in Lakeland, FL.
look at the rail flex when that rock train goes over it
My guess is that one of them was set off at Okeechobee while the other was set off at Dyer near West Palm Beach.

Neither rain, nor snow nor sleet nor gloom of night will keep dedicated railfans from getting that perfect shot. Nice work Danny

Yes, would love to. Maybe in Spring 2011 after my son graduates high school.

The overpass in Lakeland. Is it the new one? Why are they re-doing all of the roads there close to the station?
they have 3 of them, former EMD demonstators to boot (5-7).
Not exactly. See above.

What was the purpose of adding more engines?
Hey Danny, where is the largest railroad yard on the east coast,is it CSX or Northfolk Southern??? also what state and city it locate in.

Great view of the top vented dynamics on the C40-8 at 5:21.
Great as usual Danny.
Distant Signal. If you ever get up to the Midwest, check out Rochelle in. Illinois, Duplainville in Wisconsin and Porter Jct./Chesterton in Indiana!

What Coleman is the end of the 2 track main on the s line to Waldo and places up north
Coleman is in Sumter county, 4 miles south of Wildwood.
It's just a terrific narrator voice!
Nice video report Danny, as always.
if im not seeing things the first locomotive in the 4 loco consist is a c-40-8w. you can usually tell by the trucks. dash 9's have different ones

What a great spot at the overpass ^_^

I didn’t know that some of or all of the CSX C44-9Ws used to have the ditch lights mounted on the platform instead of the plow
I hate When People Drive with Their Hazards On!
Well, sometimes (for example, in fog, or other circumstances that make an operator drive way, Way, WAY below the speed limit) they make sense and aren't confusing to other rational drivers.
i didnt know that csx had gp-60s
@Distant signal its a C40-8W and one of my favorites
Danny your Lucky . In N Y State there is a Law That You Can Not Take Photo’s
Grace Nauen I live in NY...got a link to that law?
No way is that true. Photos of the trains???
Great video. How long did it take you, to be able to recognized all the locomotives.
I cheat with a loco spotters guide. :)

Wow!
I would LOVE to see those shots from Coleman someday. I was looking for the old turnout point, but not sure I found it.

How do you know if a car is loaded or not ?
Ted Cartwright Springs on the trucks (the wheels). If the springs are compressed, the car is loaded.
Sounds easy enough.
Spectacular CSX action! Is this your actual voice or do you use a program? If it is a program, what is it?
