Interesting video. Couple thoughts. I farm in a low CEC area so what I do is put MAP down with planter use the N there and crop N carry over to get me to V 5 or so. I then put in around 80lbs on N. We have OM in the 4-6 range and I count on late summer mineralization to get me through. We consistently run 150 +/- bu avg on CEC's of 6-8. Do not want to over apply our N as to not create nutrient water pollution so I gues my question is; should I spend the money on high clearance equipment for the purpose of multiple applications to achieve higher yields or do you think ny OM is carrying me as far as probably can go???

I farm in Texas my OM is 2%. Mostly continuous No till or strip till corn. Every 4 or 5 years I plant wheat or cotton to reduce residue buildup and disease. We put down 15 lbs N with the planter. The rest of 270 from V4 to early fill through the sprinkler.
We have a CEC of 24 to 30. The water holding capacity is 3.3" per ft so a 4" rain never completely fills this clay soil where we loose N. This year the corn should make 300 under full irrigation. There is no number to fit all!

We dropped our seeding rate to increase our yield. I was told I was "lucky" and had a "crystal ball" by my seed rep. But I took my yield potential down from 240 to 200. This increased my odds of surviving a bad year by nearly eliminating my areas that tried for 200bu and failed, and died off and ended up at 0-40bu corn on the sand hills. If you're irrigated and tiled and have high OM, 36000 plant pop is good. For us we have gone from 33k to 28k and been pleasantly surprised.
