This is a super helpful video. I've been occasionally referencing and wondering about referencing for a long time, and this goes a long way to explaining what we're aiming for. The thing I'm still unclear on after all this research is: if everyone's always referencing, aren't we just regressing to the mean? Didn't some mixing engineer have to figure out a good balance the we're all now checking against?

I just started referencing using AB Metric. Visually EQ matching gets you in the ballpark, that's providing your mix tracks are EQ'd correctly to begin with. My mixes are now greatly improved due to referencing... it's a must.
mixing freely does work. youre not gonna hit everytime but sometimes the freely mixed stuff turns into the new standard for referencing. good video but stop putting limitations on art. aint no rules to this shit
