EXT. SOUTH PARK AVENUE - NIGHT
Butters is sitting on the curb, in a more rundown, sad area of South Park where there's some trash bins and older buildings. Butters is holding his legs with his head down in his lap crying in the rain.
BUTTERS
(Crying)
Shadows fall over Butters.
TALL SKINNY GOTH BOY (O.S.)
Look at that... Another tortured soul.
HAIR IN FACE GOTH BOY
Another life of pain.
Butters looks up and sees the Goth kids.
TALL SKINNY GOTH BOY
Hey Raven, check it out.
Stan steps forward, walking with a cane.
STAN
Butters?
BUTTERS
(wiping his nose and eyes)
Oh,
(sniff, sniff)
Hey Stan.
STAN
What's the matter with you?
BUTTERS
Well...
(wiping his nose)
My, my girlfriend broke up with me.
CHUBBY PALE GOTH CHICK
Did she step on your heart with stiletto shoes?
BUTTERS
Yeah... It sure does hurt.
TALL SKINNY GOTH BOY
That's cool. I guess you can join up with us if you want.
HAIR IN FACE GOTH BOY
Yeah, we're gonna go to the graveyard and write poems about death and how pointless life is.
BUTTERS
Oh no thanks. I love life.
STAN
Huh? But you just got dumped.
BUTTERS
Wul, yeah, and I'm SAD. But at the same time I'm really happy that something can make me FEEL that sad. It's like... It makes me feel alive, you know? It makes me feel human. The only way I could feel this sad now is if I felt something really GOOD before. So I have to take the bad with the good. So I guess what I'm feeling is like a 'beautiful sadness'... I guess that sounds stupid.
HAIR IN FACE GOTH BOY
Yeah.
STAN
No... Butters, that doesn't sound stupid at all Butters.
BUTTERS
Thanks for offering to let me in your click, guys. But to be honest, I'd rather be a crying little pussy than a faggy goth kid. See ya, Stan.
Butters walks away, leaving Stan standing there with an incredulous look.
STAN
He's right... I don't even know who I am anymore. I like liking life a lot more than hating it. Screw you guys. I'm going home.
Stan leaves the same direction that Butters went.
TALL SKINNY GOTH BOY
(taking a step toward where Butters went)
Go ahead and go back to your sunshine fairy tale!

I always find myself thinking of this moment when I'm going through the shits. It puts things hella into perspective for me. Shout outs to Matt and Trey

Honestly I thought about this quote when my mother passed away and it taught me a valuable lesson in dealing with loss. Butters is a real one.
My grandmother almost killed me at my grandfather’s funeral years ago when she overheard me talking to my cousin about how I’d used *Butters’ quote when I got up to speak about my grandfather. (I loved him dearly; he proudly called me his “#1 granddaughter”). He would have gotten a kick out of my borrowing a quote from SP like that but my grandmother, wheeew… she was pissed, lol.
The first Thanksgiving with gobbles also talks about losing loved ones... check that episode out again
When I first saw this episode as a kid, I thought little of this scene and mostly just laughed when Butters started cussing out the goth kids. Now, as an adult, his little speech has helped me get through so much in life; two breakups, the death of my grandma, and living in a house with a psychotic drug-addict, who no longer resembles the sister of mine she once was. This scene speaks volumes to me and I remember it whenever I feel sad.
Life is a beautiful gift that we should all be so lucky to enjoy and it's too short for us to be behaving like those goth kids. Yes, there are things that make you cry but this is just part of what makes life so beautiful. If something in life can make you feel this sad, imagine what things in life can make you feel that happy.
Real, brother. Real. hope you're doing better by now
I hope you get well and better my bro. I bow to you in respect.
Indeed, well said friend
One of the shows most iconic scenes IMO. Although Butters is heart-broken, he chooses to go on with his life, no matter how dark and bleak things may seem for him. This makes Stan realize that he'd rather love life than hate it and ditches the Goth Kids.
no way you watched the video too?!?!
Figure that out all on your own?
Wow did you also read the description???
Mf has a keen eye swear to God
Looks like a case of copy and past. What is this called, plagiarizing I believe!?!?
Butters is secretly the genius among all the kids.
If they ever go the way of a spin off Butters would be the most intriguing character to do it with.
The savant fool, one of my favorite stage figures. He looks a dummy, he looks clueless, but oh boy, he ain't. HE AIN'T.
@@Metalbringer92Agreed, he always tends to give great speeches and be a voice of reason in people’s decisions. This can also be shown in the last episode of season 5 (One of my favorite episodes) where he talks about the importance of truth, butters may be naive but he does have an amazing way with words
Yeah, except that he said that goths are f...y. Being goth may be stupid bit it aint f...y. Butters are the f...y one compared to the goths. One of the Bikers: Whos this little f....t?
Well; he is the most talented. Terrible parents.
Any show would tell you to reject cynicism but this show embraces it by saying you need to accept it with the good stuff in life, because that is life.

This is strangely inspiring. If everybody faced hard situations with that attitude, people would probably find more happiness in their life.

This and his speech to his grandmother shows Butters is really mature for his age.
not ashamed to say this scene helped me get over a tough break up :)
When my old cat died five years ago, my friend sent me this clip and Butters’s quote really made me feel better about things. I know my cat died, I was really happy that I kept her for so long. Truly a beautiful sadness moment.
She told me to watch this ending.
It was a beautiful sadness and although I was sad that she passed away (I had to put her down due to her being very sick the last few moments of her life), I still have pictures of her and she was my first cat and I still love her. :) I still have a necklace with her ashes that have in memories of her. Thank you South Park for helping me grieve. This quote even made feel inspired to give my new cat a happy home and rescuing another cat gives me life. :)
This quote. This scene.

I hope your new cat is all fine.

I've been dealing with depression all my life because I lost a girlfriend who was my childhood best friend and how I'm not good enough to some of my family members. I thought suicide was my only option but after watching this video I realized that there's more to living then to just give up life.... Thank you South Park 😊🤗
Yep, this episode really made me look at things differently too :)
I was there too. After all I realized, just do not compare yourself to others, this is the source of pain. Accept yourself, do your best, then that's all.
I know this won't meant alot to you but yea I've had struggles with mental health still do while I have at times thought about taking my own life I have never tried to do it and honestly after 2020 I don't think I ever will so let's rewind a little
I was 21 years old and sick with a cold not covid when my mother delivered some shocking news a guy 2 years ahead of me in school had taken his own life he would have been like 23/24 I was in the same class as his younger sister I was absolutely stunned by the news while I was not friends with him it's still someone I knew so unexpectedly doing that the real heart breaking part is his funeral was streamed on Facebook live which I watched from my home then came the sadest moment I have experienced at a funeral his sister read his eulogy and she was in tears during it real heartbreaking stuff and I don't think I'll ever forget the look on her face point being seeing that funeral made me even more realise about people who would miss me
this 2 minutes of south park has helped me many times in life. thank you matt and trey for all the laughs and wisdom
This is my most favourite scene in the series so far. Especially, Butters crying, the rain and song in background part. This reminds me so much of myself few months back.
Your life sucks then
Hope you're in a better place now.
I think about this scene when I'm really sad, trying to frame it as a beautiful sadness... Sometimes it's harder than others but I am grateful that South Park has these moments of emotion insight
Just got out of a 7 year relationship and I've been sad all day, nothing seems to calm me down. But watching this clip certainly makes my day a little bit easier. I never thought I'd find peace at a time like this from a southpark clip. Thanks Butters ❤️
Hang in there
Im really sorry man, I hope you are doing good now
This is one of my all time favorite scenes.
😁
My dog died. a few days ago, and i've been feeling down, so i looked up this to remind myself of how to look at the sadness, be it from a broken heart or death of a loved one. the time we spent and the memories bad and good are bountiful non the less. and the sadness, i feel is proof that it was real, and worth it. Rip Little jey.
Very touching experience. Thank you for sharing.
Even coming from a fictional character, hearing this helped me feel so much better. Thank you, Butters.
This episode literally helped me through a heartbreak
This will always be one of my favorite scenes in South Park 🙂
He'd so adorable yet wise 😩
This episode is fucking incredible. It managed to become my absolute favorite even though my favorite characters are actually Kenny and Eric. Every single scene is so good. The script is top notch, and as a voice-acting enthusiast I just find the delivery of each line so satisfying :') I love SP's line delivery in general though...
The moment where everyone is relatable to Butters.
I’ve been rewatching South Park. In my rewatch I’ve realized Butters is my favorite character. When I got to this episode and butter bottom butch, I realized he’s the best written character
Happiness doesn't last forever, but sadness doesn't either. Sadness proves you had something beautiful enough to feel sad for, and one day you can have it again.
Bro i swear I almost cried watching this. Butters is so sweet he didn’t deserve that, it’s still nice to see how through tout bad times he still sees the good in life 😢🥹
I may be looking to much in to it but, in my head, Butter's reflection in the puddle beneath him, whithc exclusively shows the lower portion of his face, is to prove his point of 'being happy even when I'm sad'.
An absolutely fantastic moment in the series that really shows the, somewhat, emotional maturity of Butters and South Park itself.
My late husband and I Loved this show, especially the goth kids, butters, and Kenny! That little insite butters gives already helps me get threw the pain when nothing else will
All jokes aside this is actually a really nice and uplifting message
1:27 not stan taking cartmans line
Butters always dropping nuggets of wisdom and knowledge
I am not a South Park fan, but I really needed this, this week.
This is a comedy show, but complimentarily we were given some serious wisdom from one of the most naive characters in South Park. Trey and Matt are truly geniuses.
Like many, I've left pieces of my heart in many different places throughout my life. Especially early on, the break ups were painful, and as life went on, they became easier to except, but now, I am with someone who brings out the best in me and thankfully gets the more finished product than those before her. But without those mistakes of the past, my blessing of the present wouldn’t be. I am grateful for the broken roads that I have traveled on throughout my life, because they led me to my true soulmate. The moment she said "I do", the pain, the heartbreak, the misery, and the sleepless nights all became worth it.
This is one of my favorite episodes for many reasons, but without a doubt, the ending message is what will stay with me forever. And the cherry on top was Stan using Cartman’s line on the goth kids, showing that, for all of his enormous flaws, Cartman still matters to Stan. He still values him as a person, even if he shouldn't, and he realizes that he still has so many that care about him and still so much to live for, and that is wonderful to see.
I come back and watch this whenever I'm sad. It makes me appreciate my experiences more.

I just saw the scen from Louie where Louie is heartbroken and his wise old neighbor with the three-legged dog says to him, "boy, misery is wasted on the miserable." It reminded me of this equally awesome scene from south park and i came to revisit it.
This lesson stayed with me growing up

I know this is silly but it’s like the Winnie the Pooh quote about being lucky to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard. Love this Butter’s moment
Bro I come back to this clip when I'm feeling down in the dumps like butters. But then as butter says it's a kind of beautiful Sadness you're strangely happy something so good could make you feel so sad and to feel the good again you need to suffer through the bad to make the good feel good in life you have to take the good with the bad.

Anytime I'm feeling down I come watch this scene , butters always reminds me that life is beautiful .
This scene and quote has helped me in a lot of ways and has given me a lot of perspective. When I lost my friend to suicide I wanted to see him and I ended up turning on South Park because we both would always watch it. This happened to be the episode we landed on and this quote genuinely moved me. Sometimes I wonder if he would have saw a different perspective on his life if we watched this episode. I’ve been going through a lot lately. But to hear is simple little words, snaps me into the beauty side of what’s going on that seems all wrong. i watched this episode when it came out when I was 11 and even then I felt this message was solid. You need to compare and contrast things in order to fully appreciate life. Such a powerful message from a silly show.
