Thanks Paul, approached this job with a lot of uncertainty. Your video put me over the top. For a first timer the result was pretty dam good. Thanks again
Hi Paul, if an old plaster wall that has now appeared too have dried out after a water leak but no mould was showing when i stripped it but still is giving out a damp musty odour will a skim of plaster block it and what weight tub are you using just to give me an idea? thanks
Great video! Have always put off anything drywall or plaster related but now that Im ‘retired’ my wife says I’ve got time…lord knows I’ve got patience. Have a question though…Our house went through a pretty hefty earthquake about 50 years ago. It cracked a couple of seams between the ceiling joints and one of the kids decided to fill them in…with Alex caulk😂. I’m just going to try and pull that stuff out, chamfer the edges, mud and tape. Nails/screws are secure. Shouldn’t be much else to do right? Everything is actually sand textured. Thanks Again For The Video👍
Finally, a drywall video done by a competent professional. It is very obvious that Paul knows his sh!t and isn't producing content to simply raise his hit and view rates for ad revenue. Excellent work that is short, to the point and doesn't include any ramblings or unneeded filler and sales pitches that waste my time.
I agree, I'm a professional taper myself and Paul is the only finished I've seen who actually knows what he's talking about and is offering very solid advice, he's the only other finisher I've seen doing a level five finish with a pan and knife too, awesome tips man for real.
I'm planning to smoothen a textured wall for home theater as well. How did it go for you? I'm thinking of skim coating only the screen area so I can use projector paint on it.
Did this today on two small ceilings. works a treat! my arms are so sore! Only suggestion I have is that after you are done and let set for a bit, go over th ceiling with a damp wallpaper sponge - smoothes it out with no sanding or reapplication. I am good to go with one skim coat and some touchups. Thanks, Paul!
I dabble in the DIY arts… eek! I’m watching your video before I attempt to repair an area of ceiling prior to painting. I would have hired a professional but it’s not in the budget. Wish me luck and thanks for all the great information.
My daughter and I are scrapping a popcorn ceiling in her room as I text. We are going to try this technique when done. We are in high hopes right now thank you for your videos without them probably would never attempt
Great clips. My soon to be fiancé and I purchased our first home for our family. The Landry room needs a lot of love. The wallpaper was top to bottom. And not prepped and damaged the drywall etc. good videos. Thank you from some first time hon buyers DIY style.
I got a mobile home there used to be a skylight in bathroom. This video helped me out a lot my ceiling is that high ridge texture and now the patch from skylight no longer there matches the rest of bathroom thanks again Paul
DIY here in upstate NY. I just removed some wainscoting with chair rail in my 6’ x 5’ bathroom. Thanks for the video! I got the confidence to tackle this job that i was going to hire it out. I plan on sealing the ripped drywall paper before i put the skim coat on via paint roller and 14” knife
Im just a diy who might have gotten himself in over his head over a bathroom wallpaper removal and paint job. followed most of your steps but the client had old compound that i had to hand mix. also noticed directions said apply on dry walls had a hard time getting it to stick evenly after just steaming all the wallpaper off. I've tried to tell client i should probably do another coat but they just want me to sand and paint. THanks for all your videos they help immensely
I just stripped off the wallpaper from a room. when the paper came off so did the drywall paper and the paint behind it. So you can image what I have. So I found your video and I think I can do this. Can't wait to try
I scraped popcorn ceilings and sanded them. They looked pretty good and I was hopeful to just paint, but I looked at them for 2 days and I know the right thing to do is to now skim coat the ceilings. That trick of the leading edge is going to save me I never knew that trick. So, I'm encouraged that this roller technique then smooth will work. Wish me luck :)
So satisfying to watch these videos! We just bought our first house and we are excited to try skim coating our textured walls. Thanks for all the tips, it makes it seem less scary!
Ok so for all you DIY’ers..I bought a house in October that every single wall had a HORRENDOUS texture. I mean like dime size chunks that were up to 3/8” thick. I have done every single wall minus 2 bedrooms. Even the kitchen. Let me help you. This is NOT easy. It’s doable. But I doubt you will get perfect walls. So: 1. If your texture is thick? Scrape the walls down to knock the high points off. Otherwise when you trowel it will hit those and make skip lines. 2. The first coat will look bad. It’s ok. Second coat covers it. 3. When you are troweling the final coat, you will have a boogers that catch in your trowel. You will leave lines and lift offs. Don’t do anything about it until it dries, which takes 24 hours. You will have air bubbles. Don’t chase them. You will just keep making a bigger mess. After it dries sand the ever living crap out of the wall. Sand and sand. THEN..and this is critical..go back with mud and fix the boo boos. It’s impossible to do it while the wall is wet. You just make more boo boos. 3. Joint compound is CHEAP. That’s a good thing. A average bedroom will probably take 2 maybe 3 buckets at 16$ each. 4. It’s messy. Paul here is brilliant. He’s obviously skilled. But me? When I’m done I’m basically a wall. I have shit everywhere. 5. You will suck at first. So pick a non vital room to practice. 6. If you have ugly walls though, this method will make them look really really better. But unless you have natural born talent it won’t be absolutely perfect. But that’s what low sheen darker paint is for. Paul if you have read this I will say there’s no way I would have attempted and done all I have if it hadn’t been for your videos. I just did the bathroom and it’s much better than where I started. Kudos to you because this is pretty tough work!
Great to get this from the perspective of a DIYer who hasn't become an expert. I tried this once and failed miserably. I did everything you say not to do like fixing air bubbles and fixing lift-offs while the stuff was still wet. Finally gave up and called a pro. Now I'm planning to give it another shot.
Thanks Charles! I cried today after attempting to do the bathroom walls and ceiling. I’m contemplating hiring someone, but I doubt I could afford that. I took the popcorn ceiling off and took wallpaper down. After painting crown moulding will go up. Could someone give me an idea how much a 10x12’ ceiling would be if i hired it out. I’d strip the popcorn and let them get it ready to paint. I’m exhausted and a little discouraged.
Dude, thank you so much for your detailed experience. I'm in the process of skimming my whole house after watching a ton of videos and your step by step coat details are gold. Thank you
30 year AutoBody Frame repair tech. Been out of that for a while,, and have done DIY as needed over the years,,,, I thought,, I do bonda daily,, mud will be easy. Well it is,,, but a different animal all together and different application and sanding techniques. Now doing some new kitchen walls, Saving the family money by doing it all myself.
I’m a DIYer and I will be skim coating a powder room. Only need to do the upper half of room since I’m adding paneling. Thank you for sharing your tips of the trade.
I work on 500 apartments, honey do's mostly. I have a ceiling with a long- 13 ft long separation crack from a water leak. I pulled the tape and I'm not sure about putting up new paper tape. I've used the fiber tape but it usually ends up at the surface where it becomes difficult to hide. I think your "cracks" video helped; I'll know tomorrow.
Finishing up the job I paid a drywall guy to do. He said he'd make it "paint-ready" and he left it with thin white blotches over the drywall screws and over the joints. He left dips from edges to the wall and left scrape marks in the compound he did apply. I asked him to come back 3 times and he maybe did two places instead of all that I asked and it was a SMALL kitchen. Plus he did only the joints on the ceiling and nothing else. I emailed and called to no avail and he said that didn't come with the contract even though he agreed in the emails before I hired him to make it paint-ready. So ...long story, I have to redo it, want to, because I'm not paying ANOTHER person not to it right. Thanks for making your videos low key and chill so I'm not worrying about being perfect. Appreciate you!
Damn! It’s hard to know who you are hiring these days…esp if not a big expensive reputable business. I’m considering, but dreading, whether I need to mud my own walls in my own theater….yours come out good?
@@GregoryGuay I finished 3 of the five wall sections in the kitchen, nothing in the bthrm/Landry rm combo b/c the countertop guys measured wrong and cut my kitchen sink opening a 1/2" off center and I'm waiting (2 months) for them to resolve that problem. I'm using the bthrm as a temp kitchen. So I think this is an example of men taking advantage of this female w/o a man present b/c they can and there's no theeat. I had faith in their honesty and integrity, but none existed. I had to threaten to go to the next step with a lawyer and the owner of the stone company said he would fix it, but that was after saying the same thing 3 weeks ago. I would love to have the time and luxury to do the rest myself, but I have no time. One 45 hr a week job and a second 25 hr a week job plus a grad course (dropped down from 2). I have been dealing with all of this disheartening crap since June 2023 and I'm so worn out. Right now the living situation is rough. So I wish it turned out well, but I cannot report a positive reply at this time What about you? How is yours?
I’m glad you made these videos, it makes my handyman business easier. I’m removing wallpaper from walls that had no primer 🤦♂️. I will be now putting Gardz and skim coat with joint compound.
Hi I guess your removing the wood panels? Easy fill or joint cement usually won't stick to wood not with the filler we use in Scotland anyway just thought I'd say
Great idea. I am about to smoothen a section of a textured wall so that I can paint it with projector paint for a home theater. So not the whole wall, but only the size used for projection.
I am a DIYer and I just scraped off a mop texture from my kitchen ceiling because we want smooth ceilings. It came out pretty well and now I plan to skim coat it. A couple of questions for you Paul. 1. I bought "Topping" compound to do the skim coat but I see you are using Plus 3 joint compound. Does it matter? Should I use the plus 3 instead? 2. Would you do 1 coat? or 2? Or just decide after the first coat? Thanks!
Just a home owner DIY'er, about to tackle a ceiling skim coat for my first time. This video was super helpful, thank you so much for posting! Question: can you reuse the compound that you scrape off the ceiling or do you discard it?
wow i think this is the best way ... unlike here in the Philippines ..we are only using Palita ... paint roller is for Primer paint and Top coat Paint. ..
Thanks Paul! This is so helpful. I'm doing my first room, skim coating the walls (around 3 doors and 2 windows) and your videos are how I've learned to do it. Thank you so much! I appreciate your calm delivery and easy-to-follow instructions!
Thanks for the info. I’ve watched several videos regarding skim coating and yours seems to be the most straight forward. I’ve just removed two rooms of 1960/1970’s paneling and am hoping to skim coat 🤞🏻 Will try this before I throw up new Sheetrock!
I'm taking down old kitchen cabinets, and removing existing wallpaper. I need to skim coat where sheetrock white paper got peeled off. Will treat those areas first, however, with a sealer.
I've watched 100's of inside corner repair but few, if any, outside corner repair where paint has chipped off and/or slight dings. I want a clean corner freshly painted. What do you suggest? Using hot mud, then regular joint compound for 2nd/3rd coats? Should I use fibafuse also? Can't find videos. Thanks for your help. I think I've watched all your videos. What a huge help for me - an older DIY'er fixing up my old house.
Thank you so much for posting these videos! I'm redoing two closets and after tearing out the shelves and rails the walls were a mess. I watched your video once and felt confident enough to DIY them. They're definitely not as "smooth as glass" like yours are but they came out pretty good if I do say so myself.
I run a refurbishment company - I don't touch the walls myself thought! we do renovations in condominium common areas - and we put up wallpaper 90% pf the time in corridors and such. Right now we are in a 22 storey high rise that has badly abused walls. We are finding that the drywall we scrubbed, washed and scraped clean is so delicate. The owners wanted full skim coats but we have to explain to them its much better to prime and seal to prepare for the adhesive layer and not skim coat it. Skimming for paint is good but for new wallpaper, it's different. We are also using micro-vented (perforated) wallpaper due to their high humidity environment. That will be a first and we want to ensure success! Any thoughts on prepping for new wallpaper?
I see you used Plus 3 on the ceiling, and All Purpose on the walls. Is there a reason for that? Also, When you do the ceilings in sections, is there any issues when you eventually do a section beside one of the earlier sections, which would be dryer? Do you gently work into that dryer section? Finally , what is the thickness of each coat? Thanks!!
Great video! Beginning DIY'er here. The ceiling looks different vs, what it looked like in the beginning of your video when you start adding the compound. Did you scrap the popcorn ceiling first here? Thanks
I'm doing a popcorn ceiling Popcorn ceiling did I have scraped off and tried to repaint but to drywall paper is bubbling so I was watching to see if I needed to put a skim coat down
Really enjoyed the video, so informative. I have zero skim coating or drywall experience. Recently bought a house with a popcorn textured ceiling, hate it! Trying to figure out a budget way of covering it up. Ideas?
If you can't finish the entire ceiling or wall the same day, can you do them in sections after allowing the previous to dry? For us guys with old man shoulder 😆
Hello Paul. I found your sight by asking: "How to fix a wall when I removed Wallpaper!" I have a few sections on my Master Bathroom where some paper got removed. I wanted to say: I took off all excess paper. Then, I used a Sanding Sponge (Soft) all throughout the Bathroom. I'm now ready to cover up these sore spots. Would "Sparkling Paste," do a good job to these sore sights? Let Dry for a Day! Then Use "Zinsser Mold Killing Primer," all throughout the entire Dry Wall, let Dry a Day, then Paint. Is this acceptable to you? Thank You!
Excellent and detailed video. I need to do the same on my kitchen backsplash in order to get ready to install my ceramic backsplash. Could you please give any special advice. Thanks in advance. Attentively Fanny
Hi Paul - thank you for these videos! Going to give this a try for my hard, rough textured ceilings. Is there anything I need to do to prep the ceiling before I start skimming on the joint compound? Thank you for your help!
I'm about to start a little at home job, 750 square feet to be exact. What would you recommend time wise between skim coats? Thanks for the uploads, really helpful stuff.
Hi , I am so happy i found your channel... feeling so much more confident in starting my bathroom project. BIGT hank you, Paul!! I have also a question, My project is the BAthroom wall, which are knockdown walls and have a waterproof coating,? sort of shiny, hope you know what i mean. Can I use the USG joint compound right on that or is there a problem with this coating. ? Highly appreciate your input. Thanks Katherine
Hi Paul, thank you for all of your educational videos. This is a really good tutorial because I'm a total beginner. I'll be doing a skim coat in my Kids Room to smooth a knockdown textured wall for a wall mural. I've got a couple of questions: (1) Does the USG Joint Compound have a significant odor while it dries? Any recommendations on ventilation? (2) Do you recommend a sealer or primer to be applied to the wall before installing the Wall Mural with adhesive?
Hey Paul! So glad I’ve found your videos. I’ve redone two ceilings in my home previously that had stippled texture. I sanded the texture off by hand……..worst thing ever. I was prepared to do The same thing in the third bedroom I’m remodeling now but it had been painted and sanding was not an option. I didn’t feel I should try to skimcoat right over the heavy stippled texture since I’m a novice at drywall work so I scraped most of it off. I did scrape down to the drywall paper and through it in a lot of areas. Is that a concern before I skimcoat? Thanks so much and I appreciate your videos!

Thanks for the info. I’ve watched several videos regarding skim coating and yours seems to be the most straight forward. I’ve just removed two rooms of 1960/1970’s paneling and am hoping to skim coat 🤞🏻 Will try this before I throw up new Sheetrock!
Thank you so much. DYI maintenance.
Im working on stress cracks and wallpaper removed walls and i am a DIYr
Thank you so much for posting these videos! I'm redoing two closets and after tearing out the shelves and rails the walls were a mess. I watched your video once and felt confident enough to DIY them. They're definitely not as "smooth as glass" like yours are but they came out pretty good if I do say so myself.
This is super amazing video!!! I can't wait to try your techniques thank you so much for simplifying the process!!
Very cool Paul
Thanks for the knowledge man. Your great at what you do! Your videos have helped us a lot!
Thanks for the video, it's great. Why does it take two coats when the first coat you put on looks so clean, even and smooth?
I see you used Plus 3 on the ceiling, and All Purpose on the walls. Is there a reason for that? Also, When you do the ceilings in sections, is there any issues when you eventually do a section beside one of the earlier sections, which would be dryer? Do you gently work into that dryer section? Finally , what is the thickness of each coat? Thanks!!
Big help thanks
DYIer, thanks for the great videos!
Great vid man
Great job!🤙
Dyi’er I have a ceiling in a bedroom I need to cover popcorn texture on!!
excellent,, thanks
Great video! Beginning DIY'er here. The ceiling looks different vs, what it looked like in the beginning of your video when you start adding the compound. Did you scrap the popcorn ceiling first here? Thanks
Thank you paul good information
Glad you enjoyed it Jeze!👍
Oh I love This! Ty. Subscribed!
Thank you so much for watching and subscribing my friend!🔥🙌🏼😎 -Paul
What kind of roller cover is that? I looked at the amazon list and you a few on there
I'm doing a popcorn ceiling Popcorn ceiling did I have scraped off and tried to repaint but to drywall paper is bubbling so I was watching to see if I needed to put a skim coat down
Really enjoyed the video, so informative. I have zero skim coating or drywall experience. Recently bought a house with a popcorn textured ceiling, hate it! Trying to figure out a budget way of covering it up. Ideas?
Is that you paul brushing the wall. Like the content. I learn lot here
If you can't finish the entire ceiling or wall the same day, can you do them in sections after allowing the previous to dry? For us guys with old man shoulder 😆
Hello Paul. I found your sight by asking: "How to fix a wall when I removed Wallpaper!"
I have a few sections on my Master Bathroom where some paper got removed.
Thank You!
Thx for the info👍
Why do you use a 3/4"nap roller for walls and a 1 1/4" nap roller for the ceiling vs. the same nap for boh? Just curious. Thanks for the video.
Hi , I am so happy i found your channel... feeling so much more confident in starting my bathroom project. BIGT hank you, Paul!! I have also a question, My project is the BAthroom wall, which
are knockdown walls and have a waterproof coating,? sort of shiny, hope you know what i mean. Can I use the USG joint compound right on that or is there a problem with this coating. ? Highly appreciate your input. Thanks Katherine

redoing texture in bathroom, removing popcorn and replacing all of it with knock down
Hi Paul, thank you for all of your educational videos. (2) Do you recommend a sealer or primer to be applied to the wall before installing the Wall Mural with adhesive?
hi, great video! Question...what do you recommend as the best primer after skim coating?????
I like Zinsser 123. 👍🏻🤓
Expert man weldone
Nice job Paul. I don't know if I missed anything on the trowel type but is it flexible? What size?
Thanks for your help.
Hey Paul! So glad I’ve found your videos. I’ve redone two ceilings in my home previously that had stippled texture. I sanded the texture off by hand……..worst thing ever. I was prepared to do
The same thing in the third bedroom I’m remodeling now but it had been painted and sanding was not an option. I didn’t feel I should try to skimcoat right over the heavy stippled texture since I’m a novice at drywall work so I scraped most of it off. I did scrape down to the drywall paper and through it in a lot of areas. Is that a concern before I skimcoat? Thanks so much and I appreciate your videos!
good ! 👍👍
Hey Paul, are you visiting the Midwest region anytime soon????
Great technique. How would you skim coat a concrete backboard used on a wall section?
Can you skim coat using this roller method using the product Thoroseal (instead of the mud you're using)? Thanks for the great DIY video.
Ceiling before walls? Should I close the mud can to keep it from drying out?
I've seen you skim with all purpose and plus 3. What would you recommend for doing a new skim coat over painted plaster walls?
