i just want to say thank you for spreading the word, and I am humbled by such a glowing review. I'd love for people to see it and enjoy it for what it is (whatever that is lol). It's born of love if nothing else! Anyway, thank you :)
To me, the 1934 War Of The Worlds is the definitive adaptation of the original story for this modern digital age. It utilises the tools of today’s animation and tells the story in a new and unique format - in the form of internet horror or “analog horror”. But in the same way Orson Welles perfectly adapted the original story into Radio and in the same way Jeff Wayne adapted the original story into Music, 1934 has perfectly adapted the original story into “analog horror”. And what’s great about all three of these adaptations to different mediums, is that they have to be clever and work within their limitations, and due to the original book being so loose with the descriptions of the tripods and Martians, each adaptation has to be filled with a hefty amount of creativity. Point being, I consider 1934 to be our time’s “Orson Welles Radio Broadcast” and our time’s “Jeff Wayne Musical”. 1934 adapts the original story into a brand new modern medium with brimming creativity and terror. It’s spectacular. It is also not a coincidence that the most potent and effective incarnations of wotw always spawn in the midst of social unrest and fears of invasion and war.
Thank you for your great review of War of the Worlds 1934! I was blown away by Chris's first 19 videos, and lust for more! A sterling accomplishment the instills a profound thirst for more! Thank you!
You are absolutely right Chris is hands down one of the most creative and generous people on UA-cam and it’s an absolute joy to review his work. Thanks for watching.
For all the movie and video representations of the story, WHY has no one ever actually filmed the book as written by Wells? The last version I saw was a British TV version that seemed to be written by someone who didn't like Well's novel and message. Only Jeff Wayne's musical version remains true to the original story and setting.
There is a certain sacred aspect to the book version. To visualise the book in an absolute manner runs the risk of either spoiling it, or removing the imagination from the reader. Mainly though, I think it is the blueprint of the story that is most enticing to someone retelling it, and all the versions lean into their current mediums. The book/journal/diary for 1895 is the correct medium for that year, as they didn't have radio, TV, or film (well not in a capacity ready to tell such a grand tale). But I agree with you, it'd still be good to see a version based very purely on the book without distortion. Who knows, maybe one day it'll happen! Edit: Or a TV series. It's a shame the BBC couldn't swallow their narrative and just make a faithful version. They already have a ton of period drama props and costume. They were in the ideal position and fluffed it. Hey ho.
@@waroftheworlds1934 Your last paragraph/edit: Amen to that. I was really disappointed. Rest of your comment I agree its always controversial attempting to faithfully bring a treasured work into visual medium and rarely does it ever live up to the reader's imagination. Mind you, Lord of the Rings shows it can be done while keeping most of the fanbase happy.
wow ok. I really enjoyed your thoughts on this. I'm not actually a big sci-fi fan but I always liked how the WOTW often reflects social concerns of any era it emerges from. Really glad you focused on that. This incarnation is fascinating from a current perspective. I feel like society today is oversaturated with poor quality information and shallow human contact. Add into the mix the social fragmentation and division that is occurring and you have a recipe for alienation, isolation and bewilderment. The fact there the is no strong central protagonist to lead us through this is why it feels relevant despite the when it is set. We're all in this together, alone. How this work came about is bloody poetic too! A virus, bacteria, disease. To start in real life what closes the story, brilliant. The government wont save us from this. The media lies. The military only increases carnage. The power of authority is only an illusion broken by something far bigger than we know how to respond to. Where will this go? Have hope and continue on. Looking forward to where this will take us. This is a different age after all.
Love this video and now I'm going to sub to the channel as you gave me a lot to think about. Also if I was making my own spin on war of the worlds personal I'd make like a small survival story of a or a group of survivors we only hear in passing or by nicknames. All trying to survive in a nameless town, land city. But at the same time enjoying small victories fighting back. Not with great weapons but cunning and gile through tricks and traps. All while one character writes a journal talking about the aliens from a person's point of view. But all of it intentionally vague, intentionally lacking details like skin tones, regional names, and stuff. Only given things like hight and body types, general ideas of weather and plants or buildings. That way anyone who reads it could imagine whoever they want in the story, anyone could read it and feel like the aliens are in there country or at there door.
This sounds like an intriguing idea, boiling the story down to its basic elements and then exploring the world of war of the worlds in greater detail. Let me know if you do this because I would like to see it getting made. 👍
@@thedeclineandfallofbritishsci thanks but I have a high fantasy story to finish first 🤣 Not sure if this is boiling it down to the base elements or not though. Maybe it is Maybe not. But to me the idea of being so vague is to give it a timeless feel by not giving time periods or spacifics on tech, but also ethnicity as these people could be anywhere or anyone. Which may actually make the story creepier like it was for the Brits but everyone Though I already have a few ideas on how a couple of people could beat a try pod. By tripping it then hooking it up to a few electrical generators. I don't care what kind of armour you got that is going to sting.
I was more into HG Wells The Time Machine as a kid read the books multiple times and saw the 1960 movie many times more. War of the Worlds was always something I was just aware of due to the infamous radio broadcast, I think I didn't see an adaptation of the book until the Tom Cruise film and I've still never read the book. Great video by the way, can't say I'd ever considered the 'invasion wave' angle of the late Victorian era novels.
@@davidyemm7910 Absolutely love the George Pal Time Machine (and his War of the Worlds is probably my fave). I watch the Time Machine fairly often, as it's got such a great & easy going style. Really good background when doing something too. I've actually put some serious consideration into making a version of the Time Machine as a future project after War of the Worlds. I think it could be done so well now. It's on the back burner for sure. My missus wants me to do a H P Lovecraft story next, so maybe after that. It'd be hard to measure up to the 60's version though. It's be a very different style. It kind of surprises me that it's only had the one remake in all these years. It's almost weird... and the early 2000's version with Guy Pierce really missed the mark in my opinion. Not awful, but kind of cheesy.
I saw this new war of the worlds resently and I enjoyed it it was almost on par with 2005 movie by Stephen Spealbarge and its not even complete I talked to the videos creator personaly and he said him self I'm not done yet, I'm just geting started, just you wait I have something planed, I promise I'll knock war of the worlds 2005 off its frown thats a promise.

1:19-1:25 "All of terrestrial weapons are useless against this on coming threat" In chapter twelve of the book which predates all movies and shows about it. A Martian fighting machine is destroyed by an Artillery battery unit. It's Blitzkreig that gives the Martians their greatest advantage.
Yes I seem to remember this happening and the Martians using black smoke on every artillery emplacement and possible artillery emplacement from then onwards.
Our weapons absolutely were effective against the invaders. Their war machines fell to British artillery, the issue was the black smoke, but an early edwardian military would have taken out this expeditionary force given time. They only had 50 fighting machines, once we developed gas masks, that neutralises the black smoke, the heat ray is a line of sight weapon, British artillery was not. The hms thunder child was only a coastal cruiser, and it took down two fighting machines and badly damaged a third, the Royal Navy had literally hundreds of ships, the empire and the dominions could have had a million soldiers in Britain maybe 2 million, the Martians, who have no supply lines, no way of getting reinforcements would be absolutely destroyed.
one problem is the shields but its a really good one even do i think the handlings harvest but they don't really do that, its one of the best adapations out currently i guess.

Don't forget "The Doom of London" in 1900. Good read. The writer predicted a horrible fog which would suffocate thousands...and in 1954, it did.
