I've recently setup one of my hognose with UVB and a halogen flood and he basks out in the open. I'm really happy with the results, but this was a great video to get me thinking on how I can improve his basking area!
Brilliant, I throughly enjoyed this video and have certainly taken several things from it, learning never stops especially when individuals like yourself continue to make advancements and spread better knowledge. Thank you my friend!
@@JTBReptiles they definitely are! There aren't many useful videos on corns out there so I very much appreciate your channel for helping me research before I got my little noodle.
Perfect, nice job! I’ve been setting my vivs up this way with all the lighting grouped at one end and the other end fixture-free. I have had to do it custom because a lot do the pre-routed stuff is set up to have the light go all the way across the length of the enclosure.
Thanks! Aye, it always annoys me when companies make vivaria where you can’t customise lighting - I always shudder when I see those grey plastic vivs available in the States with the cylinder for putting a light in! Turned me right off BioPods, too...
Another interesting video!. I have bright areas and shaded areas AND cork bark tubes with holes and cracks that allow for cryptic basking even though i did not know that was a thing but it made sense to me when I set it up. It is good to know I am correct in my thinking. Tweaking my heating after watching your previous video has made a big difference in my Geckos activity levels! Keep up the good work!
Another video to get you thinking :-) Interestingly yesterday morning I removed the Monstera from my Grandis enclosure as it was just getting too big and I was finding the leaves taking over. I have replaced it with a Anthurium Jungle which will still have nice large leaves and will grow it to give some cover but hopefully not as overpowering. What I have noticed today though is that because I have opened the top of the enclosure up as there are no large leaves she was basking on the diagonal bamboo which she has not done for a while. In this spot she can now bask under the UV, Jungle Dawn and will pick up some of the heat from basking bulb. Maybe a coincidence but after watching the video it made me thing that she would move throughout the day by being under the heat lamp, then the UV and then under the JD. As you said in nature they don't move to get different levels of IR, it happens all in one place. Time to look at the rest of the enclosures now.
What is your reasoning for putting the heat light so low in enclosure I’ve been researching and your videos have insipered me but also I’m still very confused lol I have a 48x16x24 pvc and try to figure how to position lights Thinking of just barely dropping heat halogen just past top of enclosure But seeing yours on corn snake making me second guess Would love your opinion Keep doing what your doing much enjoy your videos
Hey, I know you posted this 3 years ago but I was just wondering if I could get some advice - I’m getting a 5x2x2ft viv for my amelanistic corn snake with red eyes so I think she is or is partly albino; I can’t find Information on if any adjustments to UVB strength are needed? I’d really appreciate any help!
I just want to say thank you JTB reptiles. You have made me realize that heat mats are not good anymore. And now I am switching to halogens and uvb. But I have one question should I go for halogens for my corn snake and ball python or a deep heat projector?
You’re very welcome! Definitely go for halogens, they’re much better at replicating sunlight. I made a video answering the very question you ask some months ago - you can watch it here ua-cam.com/video/dUJZ04sqhxk/v-deo.html 😁👍
I personally would use a bulb that emits visible light so as Joe says they experience infrared A whilst cryptic basking during the day. The deep heat projector is ok to use at night should temps drop below recommended levels but should never really be used as a stand alone heat source.
With regards night-time heating, the case can actually be made that the deep heat projector shouldn’t be used here, either. In nature there is no infrared A or B whatsoever at night, so offering it at night in captivity is completely unnatural! Ideally we should be using something which heats up to 60 degrees as an absolute maximum (so if you pointed a temp gun directly at the heater, it’d read nothing higher than 60), as such an element would only offer wavelengths naturally encountered at night. This is a tricky business I will return to later in the year! (In most situations, night-time heating is not necessary anyway, so don’t worry about this too much 🙂)
Question: when should I turn on/off my lights/heat lamps is do I keep them on at all times? I've set up my tank but don't have a snake in there yet. (It's my first time owning a reptile and I want to make sure everything is correct) Thanks in advance!
There’s no reason why you could not try it. It would be interesting to see if they used it. I am wanting to do so myself but need to find a way to guard the lamp (because I haven’t been able to find a light guard big enough for a spot LED, and corn snakes are buggers for touching lamps).
The enclosure should be at least as long as the snake, with a good amount of depth and climbing height. Adults need a 4x2x2’ enclosure or larger. He can go in his adult enclosure right away as long as there’s enough clutter and plant coverage, and not too much open space.
Have a look here: ua-cam.com/video/cLADA8Sm9AY/v-deo.html The conclusions of this video are as follows: we should be using lamps to replicate sunlight conditions, not control temperatures. Provided that we accurately replicate sunlight, as long as temperatures are within a "comfortable" range, it doesn't matter what they are. Air temps are to be measured with a probe or dial at the cool end of the enclosure; the air temp at the basking site will not be very different - any measurements made at the basking site will read higher than the air temperature due to radiative heating of the thermometer. I haven't talked about how we _should_ go about controlling temperatures yet - so far I've only talked about replicating sunlight, which is only half of the story (albeit the more difficult half). In two months or so I will return with videos on temperature control, so stay tuned! (I don't want to give any info just yet, because I can't give full justice to a complex subject in a few lines of writing!)
@@JTBReptiles Should there be a cool side and hot side now? And if there is how would I go about doing that? Or is it like an overall air temp and they can gold into a cork flat and get a low suface temp?
It's more about a radiation gradient than anything else. Remember, in the wild herps thermoregulate primarily by moving to and from areas of light and shade: if we have a well-lit basking site and a dimly-lit shaded area, then so long as the air temperature is "comfortable" (as defined using weather metrics, illustrated in the video linked above), they will be able to warm up and cool down just like they would in the wild. So, as shown in the video we're commenting on, you should have an area where all the lights are and an area which is dark 🙂
@@JTBReptiles Ok this makes almost perfect sense. Could you tell me if i would be doing anything wrong? I want to use a zilla mini halogen bulb 25watt with the dome. A plain light dimer to make a comfortable temp rang. I will have a basking spot where all the radiation and uv and infrared will be. Then I will use the light and shade method for hides. I will do hides with corkbark how you do them. Thank you so much again for helping me you are really makeing a differenece!
