    I like how you cut the part where you actually put the distributor in the block..... and get the gear and drive shaft aligned.... which is the hard part and what we need help with!

    May want to check that when the crank is on TDC that your rotor button is facing pointing at the number one spark wire position as you maybe 180 degrees out. Crank turns twice for one distributor rotation.

    Make sure the tdc is in the compression cycle and not the exhaust cycle. Also you need to get total timing set and then initial (at idle) timing set because as the RPM’s increase, so does the need for advance.

    I cranked the engine to TDC and made sure the timing was 10 BTC and drove around with my old distributor in (wasn’t starting, I got it to run after doing that) . I’m planning on putting in a new distributor today. Looking down at the harmonic balancer, it’s not on the 0 TDC mark. Do I have to set the engine to TDC again before placing in the new distributor?

    So i notice you left off THE MOST important part of shimming the distributor so you dont destroy the camshaft
    Im sure everyone who watches this will appreciate that 👍

    Best distributor to replace it with is a HEI made for Ford. I think it was Speedway I bought mine for $79 and you can eliminate the coil. It takes all the replacement parts as a regular chevy HEI does. I bought one for my 302 in 1929 Model A.

    • @jimbo16720
      @jimbo16720 5 років тому

      Yes it will work with either the old 302 or the HO 302 which I have. The only thing different is the gear that rides on the cam gear at the bottom of the distributor. The one I got is the HO 302 which is a roller cam engine and take a special gear.

      What's nice is one power wire and one tach wire and eliminates the coil since it's built into the cap.

    First you must verify that the harmonic balancer did not spin on its rubber mounting ring by putting a piston stop in the #1 spark plug hole. It could be a few degrees off.

    Hello Mark, I have a 1978 Ford 302 engine in a pickup truck. Is there an O ring or seal where the distributor goes into the block? I think I might have a leak there, and that I might have to get this O ring replaced. The oil sits in two little depressions on each side of the water pump and distributor when it leaks out, and I sometimes soak it up with toilet paper. The leak is either from this or from where the intake manifold meets the block, but this latter joint was re-done not too long ago by a good mechanic.

    Get a oil pump primer shaft to line-up the oil pump to the distributor.

    how do you remove the interference from the oil drive shaft while stabbing the distributor?

    • @sparky72
      @sparky72 4 роки тому +3

      Use a small ratchet with a long extension and a deep socket of the size of your oil pump driveshaft to nudge the shaft bit by bit while you try stabbing in the dizzy. You’ll get it in perfectly eventually. (I’m sure you’ve figured this out by now but folks reading the comments on this video might not know :) )

    Why well they show how to do a V6 distributor on a 3.8 they show a lot of stuff that's important but the 3.8 V6 he's very important to the one on the cap point one way and a distributor rotary Point another way which way should the one be pointing on the cap

    You keep saying that you’re at TDC but you never specify which cylinder. Judging by the position of the rotor, it looks like #1 cylinder but you should specify.

  • @timmartin4798
    @timmartin4798 6 років тому

    6deg is to low should be at least 10deg for regular gas. For high test 93 octane 14deg is ideal.

    Question here for anyone who would know the answer. I have a 1986 Ford LTD Crown Victoria with the 5.0L. I've had a misfire for some time now that only occurs at idle, and I've done everything I can think of to eliminate it (plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel filter, air filter, MAP sensor and O2 sensors) and it's still there. I was thinking of replacing the entire distributor but while watching this it dawned on me that a friend of mine had timed the engine using the number 5 cylinder as a reference for the timing light (he thought #5 was #1). So my question is: Could using the wrong plug wire during the timing process result in an engine that run rough and misfires at idle, but still runs nonetheless? Or would I expect the engine not to run at all? I'm at a loss to figure out this misfire and I feel like maybe the timing need to be re-checked.

    • @lichking3711

      might as well try re-timing it, right?
