If your like me and don't sharpen a chainsaw often enough to become proficient at it then this may be an option for you to take a look at. I've had this tool for the last three to four years and its pretty handy.

Good video well done. I just received my Timberline Sharpener yesterday and sharpened my chain for the first time with it. I am very impressed with how accurate this jig is. I have tried other jigs and sharpening systems with mixed results, this is the best I have ever used. The accuracy and repeatability are over the top!

These gizmos are are great thing for those that like trying to reinvent the wheel...after 55 yr's of sharpening all my saws I will have my saw razor sharp and rakers tuned before that unit is half done...files are cheap and take up no space in my kit.

This one looks interesting. Everybody’s always looking for that magical chain sharpener.
I’ve been freehand sharpening my chains with a file for over 20 years.
However if you don’t know what you’re doing you will screw the chain up.
Also it’s a hell of a lot easier to maintain and sharpen a chain that not completely dull.
If you wait until every tooth is mushroomed over it’ll take forever to get it back. Sometimes you will never get it back.
I will file and maintain my chain multiple times throughout a long day of bucking.

I purchased an ECSS but this would be great for those times you're out and about. We don't always have an outlet close by. And by the looks of it, this system seems to be faster than an ECSS. Well worth the money when you consider the cost of having a chain sharpened. Thanks for sharing!

Reading a lot of comments and as good as the device is, it won't cure cancer or buy you a beer. However, if you want your chain sharper than when it came out of the box, take a few moments and use the timberline device. I use the stihl all in one device too, but after a couple runs, I bring my saw to the tailgate or my garage, and timberline gets all the teeth razor sharp and about the same length dimensionally. And for what it's worth, i believe the device was developed for smoke jumpers so they could quickly sharpen in the field... without having to carry a long file. If it's good enough for those folks it's good enough for me.

Love this product. I've worked with machinery for 36 years. Fitting tight tolerance parts. Down to .ooo1. Using files was something that had to be mastered. So. Using a file for my chain saw chain. Yes. Easy to do. But chainsaws are a hobby for me. Just like firearms. I enjoy the engineering of the equipment.
However. Ability to file my chains is no problem. But. I find using this Timberland product a blast to use. Maybe since it gives me something else to tinker with. And it gives me sharp chains, I work on other peoples chainsaws, and always throw in a free chain sharpening, since I use the Timberland product. And for some reason. I like the pouch as well.

When the rotary file has been turned to its full depth I think I would put a hand held strong magnet in the window and remove the filings before pulling out the rat tail. I always have serious doubts about leaving metal grit in a machine that lives on close tolerances.

But you're not filing the drags down with this device. If the drags are not filed down some, the chain is not going to go down in the wood. The Stihl sharpening device has two files, a round one and a flat one, that sharpens the tooth and files the drag down at the same time. And it has markings to be sure you're filing at the right angle.

The best way to sharpen a chainsaw chain is with a Dremel tool with a Dremel chainsaw sharpening stone (I learned this from a Stihl mechanic). Doing it with the Dremel tool is three times faster than doing it with a file, plus it doesn't take off as much metal so your chain lasts longer, plus you don't have to put the saw in a vice, or take the chain off the bar. You can buy a Dremel tool and the sharpening stones at Lowe's or Home Depot in the tool section. Dremel makes three different sizes of chainsaw sharpening stones. Stihl makes a Dremel type tool that runs on 12 V. and has battery clips for attaching to a car battery. It will accept the Dremel sharpening stones. Once you get the hang of using a Dremel tool this way you'll never touch another chainsaw file. After sharpening the chain two or three times you'll have to trim the drag links a little to get the teeth to bite. You can use the fat end of the sharpening stone to trim the drag links.

Greetings friend, thanks for the tip. Just wondering if there is some sort of guide that can be used with the dremel to ensure correct angle etc.?
Also, by drag links I assume you're referring to what others call the rakers?
      Thanks again,
      Andrew

    • @jimyost2585
      @jimyost2585 Рік тому

@@onlytruthintheworldkjv6311 ~ Stihl chains have a small angle line on the top of every cutting tooth that tells you how to line up the sharpening stone. The trick is to slightly lower the Dremel motor, I'm guessing maybe 20 degrees. If you don't do that then the saw will make curved cuts. After some trial and error you'll figure it out.

Thanks, I enjoyed your presentation. " The man who builds a better mousetrap becomes a rich man ", or something like that. Interesting setup, I assume extra stub files are available. It appears well designed & maintains the angle you set it to via the incl. angle adaptors. Depending on how often you cut wood or how much you cut will determine how often to file down the rakes with a flat file, typically a couple push strokes will do the trick. :-)

IMO that sharpener is an expensive toy based on a flawed premise- that there's benefit to having polished cutter gullets. What matters is the edge, period, with periodic attention paid to depth gauges. Simplest, most precise tool I've found for that is a Granberg file guide. Routine sharpening takes a couple strokes/cutter. Then every now and then, put in a flat file, set it up for the depth gauges, and set them precisely. Done. Files are cheap and last a long time, as do chains.

Might work just for new chains with equal teeth .
Every professional here does it with hand file , cause every teeth needs individual sharping after half life of a chain...but the tool is interesting , when the chain is under 50% actually need a file on size lower and depth limiter must be proofed . What if the file of this machine is over ? How much ?
Normal file costs 2-3 bucks and I can use it about 20 times greetings from Germany

Far to expensive in Australia , well over $200. I do have one I purchased in the USA, for the price US they are still way to expensive, Does put a nice edge on the tooth, needs far better quality knobs and the aluminum bearings for the cutters need to be steel even from new, the cutting tool has to much play, (Which stops it from being a precision tool) and even if you oil them several times a sharpening they are only going to get worse. The should come with at least 4 cutters, and spare bearings also the handle and the cutting tool do not fit in the side pouch when assembled, so that is an oversight, not a bad tool but needs some work the handle you turn to sharpen gets a bit hard on the fingers, also some graduations in the top for the depth of cut would be very handy. works well on a good chain but is a pain if the teeth are not all the same length, and no you cannot do the depth gauges with it. Sorry but not worth more than $50.

Rudy Simmonds thanks for the input. Your correct a file is faster and cheaper. However the purpose of this tool and the video is for people like me that don’t sharpen enough chains to become proficient at it. I state that within the first minute of the video. I have one saw and a few chains , if I sharpen one with a file and don’t get it correct then my cuts aren’t straight thru the log and I am working harder than I need to. Then I’m trying to correct my mistake by resharpening and that’s just wasting time. I find this tool helps me get it sharp and back to work faster than resharpening and with far less frustration. Thanks for watching.

I bought one similar at a yard sale, seems to be a less angle than an old man taught me when I was 17,029 Super farm boss,455 Rancher Husqvarna, I used to straighten out some teeth where I hit some nails.Back to the hand filing without the guide.I got the Stihl sharp as a razor without the guide and tore the wood pile up cutting it to fit the stove.45# monster maul, I haven't found anyone yet that can swing it and let the maul do the work,4 swings and they need a break..I just got finished servicing them, cleaner than I expected.I go back and forth with the saw I like the best.

      CHOOSING THE CORRECT CARBIDE SIZE
One sharpener is compatible with all five carbide sizes.
The carbide size required is determined by the chain pitch which is usually labeled on the chain saw bar near the motor and sometimes imprinted on the chain itself. This number will be .404, 3/8, .325, 3/8P, or 1/4.
      3/8″ and .404″ pitch chain = Large 7/32″
3/8″ Stihl chain (slightly smaller) = Large 13/64″
      .325″ pitch chain = Medium 3/16″
3/8″ P or Picco, low profile, micro = Small 5/32″
      1/4″ pitch chain = Extra Small 1/8″
      7/32″ = 5.5 mm
      13/64″ = 5.1 mm
      3/16″ = 4.8 mm
      5/32″ = 4.0 mm
      1/4″ = 3.2 mm
A Note About the Large 3/8 pitch
This is where people usually get confused. If you have the large 3/8” pitch chain you will need the 7/32” carbide cutter. UNLESS the brand of that large 3/8” pitch chain is Stihl. For whatever reason Stihl makes their large 3/8” pitch chains slightly smaller than the rest of the industry (we are talking slight, as in 1/32”). This is why the manufacture recommends the 13/64” size file.
For all other pitch’s it doesn’t matter what brand the chain is. So a .404 pitch chain it will always be 7/32 carbide cutter. The .325 pitch chain will always be a 3/16” carbide cutter. The smaller 3/8”P pitch (Picco or micro or LP =Low Profile) will still be a 5/32. The 1/4 pitch will still be the 1/8 carbide cutter.
Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.
