I remember this game. It blew my mind when it first came out. We never experienced graphics like this for an NBA game, blew my mind. This is back when you can rent a ps1 at the blockbuster for 20 dollars and get 2 games.
There was always a misunderstanding of this game where many thought it was supposed to be akin to contemporaries like NBA Shootout or NBA Live, when in reality it was meant to be a polygonal version of Konami’s own Run n’ Gun.
Got this game for Christmas ‘95. It absolutely floored me. If you put Jordan’s name in the create a player on this game, it would completely fill out his stats.
I totally forgot about that... My memory is super vague, but I kinda remember games adding "totally not Jordan/Shaq/Barkley" players in a few different ways. It really is lame that players that defined a generation are missing from all the games of the era though. (Unrelated, but you also reminded me how some games would switch up Rodman's hair to different colors from game to game. I used to think that was really cool as a kid.)
At the time. The most realistic adaptation, of NBA basketball. The players were bigger, and much more recognizable, than the other NBA basketball simulation contemporaries. I still remember using the Nuggets and seeing the pg named Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf. And thinking.. "Who the f*** is Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf? Oh... that's Chris Jackson.". Lol. Great times. I believe the PS1 demo, NFL Gameday, and NBA In The Zone. Were the first games I ever played on the PS1. Christmas of 95'.
Yea this was the first game i played when the ps1 dropped the game play and soundtrack was fire especially in the playoffs...was this one of the first games released for the system?
I remember back in 1996 my parents went on vacation to NY and came back with this game for no reason and gave it to me "hey got you this game is basketball what you like". I played it so many times! Then I started getting bad grades in school and my mom sold it in a garage sale 😂😂😂 stay in school kids!
@@razcarsey6635 actually I was on 6th grade on my way to be an astronaut but dropped out because of NBA in the Zone. Later I started my own online store company called Amazon back in 1999.
Man I remember thinking the graphics couldn’t get much better, and honestly I thought they would look a lot worse then they do in 2023 but this holds up more than a lot of psone games
I'm a College basketball coach, and I require my players to play this game at least 10 hours per week so they understand what real basketball fundamentals look like. Truly a masterclass in how the game of basketball aught to be played.
My childhood. I don't really like basketball like I used to when I was a kid. Never liked basketball video games either, however there were only 2 basketball games I loved because it was the arcade feel of those games. Those games were NBA In The Zone for PS1 & NBA Jam for the Arcades.
I miss that. Loved the halftime and 3rd quarter music as a kid. There was a depressing stretch of SNES and Genesis sports games where they took all the music away for the sake of supposed 'realism'. And because they didn't have the memory budgets for lots of sound effects on those little ROMS, the games felt empty and soul-less - like playing the sport all alone in an empty airplane hanger. Honestly, the music made this game a lot more fun than it actually was.
This game blew my mind the first time i saw it. A neighbor of mine had it. I dont think that i had ever even heard of a playstation. I might have seen one in one of my gaming magazines, but i dont remember. Anyway, the playstation itself didnt always work, so my neighbors didnt like it. I traded them my Genesis with a bunch of games, for the playstation, in the zone, ridge racer, and destruction derby.

This is exactly my experience 😂
Same and it came in a bulletproof briefcase lol The golden era for sure.
I remember getting this and the Magic Johnson Slam and Jam 96. This one was so much better!
Born in 88..I had this game..Man what a time the 90s were..We all looked at this as elite gaming at the time lol
same here born in 88 had a ball with this game and more classics!
I bought a PlayStation in December 95 just for this game. It felt like a real broadcast in 95. Amazing how far games have come.

I see it…

The music needs Grammy awards and lots of them. Like poor man's Jazzy Jeff scratching records in the background.
lots of it done by in house konami musician yuichi asami

And to think... you would have been a Doctor had you never touched NBA In The Zone. Sorry man.

Basically this was the continuation of the Run and Gun arcade series, for the rest of it's run on consoles.

One of the first games I got for PS1. I loved it 😊
One of the last sports games to have in-game music.

I remember this game. It's a great game. Thanks for sharing.
as a child, i remembered this game was the first to have great graphs and good blocking shot sensation and dunks, was so fun to play
This brings back so many memories
Amazingly amazing Classic!
This generation just don’t know 😂😂
For real. I had this game lol
Back when you thought the graphics were the best thing ever and they were all wearing the Shaq pumps lol
Detlef Schrempf was the Steph Curry of this game. YOu could hit a three from the locker room with the PSX unplugged with that jawn.
This was the closest gameplay to the arcade game Run N Gun
Another thing about this game.. you could shoot through the back of the backboard.
“Pick up the rock! Make the three!” YESSS!!!
Great basketball game for ps1 my friend had this and nba in the zone 2

Do Guilty Gear XRD On PS3.

You could steal the ball and completely shut a rookie player out lol
