- I set out to beat all 27 teams! I never had the chance to do it in the arcade, so I finally did it 30 years laler!
Using a SPECIAL Version that was unreleased to the public which still included MIchael Jordan, Charles Barkley, Shaq and a bunch of Mortal Kombat characters!!
I chose to do the entire run as Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen!
I captured the last minute or so of each game highlights as they are the most exciting!
Also in this version was the glass shattering effect which was removed from the final floor models!

My 5th grade teacher had a Sega Genesis in the classroom with NBA Jam. We only had a handful of opportunities to play it. Easily the most memorable thing about that school year.
It seems like I remember Grand ma ma and Alonzo Mourning being the best duo on this game. Man this takes me back to a happier time. Thank you!

The catchup mechanic the CPU gets it crazy. All of a sudden they run faster, hit everything and block everything.
The mortal Kombat 2 mechanic
The catchup mechanic can be disabled. You can also set the game to easy
You have to turn on Tournament Mode

Ya it really does for a 2 on 2 game lol. I lost some bitch ass games due to Midway's amazing keep it close AI code, but I actually appreciated it when I was down 10 going into the 4th. This game ate my quarters back in 93-94, and it was always a dream of mine to one day finish it.

This isn't a "banned" edition of TE. Its a ROM Hack that put Jordan in the game, and made the MK characters playable from the start. There were always rumors of PCBs that contained Jordan, but after 30+ years nobody has ever produced pics, videos or anything else confirming it. I've talked to many Midway employees who were around when this game was made, and they've all essentially confirmed that Turmell is a big hype man, and would say almost anything to further popularize the game.
Rumor was Gary Payton has one of the PCBs with MJ, I could be wrong thou.
Yep, that was the rumor. There was also a rumor that Ken Griffey Jr had one. Some of the dudes at Midway told me it was all BS and hype for the game. I really think we would have seen it at some point over the last 30 years ya know?@@petes2feet
It’s funny cuz I actually do remember playing an edition with MJ. It was very rare though as it was an arcade NBA Jam I played at a water park.
This didn't exist so it was probably something you dreamt, or you played as Jordan in another video game BITD (he was in the early Genesis games, and NBA Live games) and you're confusing memories. Midway employees confirmed he was never in the game. They did some early test things to show the NBA what they wanted to do with JAM and may have used the name JORDAN in those, but he was never a playable character on any of the PCBs that were public@@Kennyisdarkvanilla

Ahhh, I love this game!!! I remember playing this back in high school at our local pizza shop!!! My friends and I along with some on-lookers would always stop by after school, order a $1 special (personal pizza and soda or homemade crazy bread), and play this. Of course, the machine we played on did not have Shaq or Michael Jordan. I was never able to beat the game though.

If X-Box or PS came out with this game men in their 40’s and 50’s would purchase this game. It would reunite Gen xyz together. This game would break sales records! It would be like Gears 3 all over again.
EA Sports got the rights to NBA Jam on Fire edition which was quite different, and there is some modded Jordan versions out there. Its a fun game, but this is the best one out of NBA Jam, NBA Jam TE and even Hangtime. Im playing through HangTime now and its not as fun or exciting.

After years and years as playing as Pippen, I could reply on him. The addition of Jordan just made this my most favorite arcade videogame of all time. I'm 47, so 1993-1994 was when I would skip class and plug quarters into Jam. Then the SNES/Genesis ports game out and I just played those.... But that arcade version always poked my memory. This version is special, with MJ, Shaq, Barkley, and the Mortal Kombat characters which were banned by the NBA. Mod or not, this is the best version of NBA Jam Arcade.
The close range dunks and layups was always my favorite animations other than the Broken glass

It's an arcade rom. This one is in the FBNeo romset under the name nbajamre.zip You need the original nbajamte from the same set for it to run as well.

The computer on this game has always been relentless especially the later the game gets.
The studio is notorious for rigging their games and making them almost unplayable. The CPU responded to your button mashing, almost as if you controlled them. For example, if you pressed "shoot," the CPU opponent guarding you automatically stopped you. Also, there needed to be a way to push them sometimes. Lastly, the game took control of the directions you jumped to prevent you from blocking shots. It was borderline illegal.

I never made it that far in the game for most of what you mentioned. The computer was a cheat code 😂
it was a serious grind...
the ai in this is soo rubber...its annoying, they will always be soo close to you or win.
Alot times you would up by 5 or 6 with like 15 seconds to go and the CPU would tie it up or beat you.
Tell me about it man.... I know this vid shows a perfect run (almost), but there were a few cheap computer wins in there I just edited out.... This version wasnt that bad, and I felt pretty strong with Jordan... I also found his hotspot 3 which helped me gain and maintain leads.... Some teams were SOOO hard.

they had intended to have MJ in the game but couldn't because he holds the rights to his own likeness and Midway had only negotiated with the NBA. so he's only in the earliest versions.
same thing with Shaq (who would change his mind in later games) and Charles Barkley (who was left out of the home versions because Accolade had negotiated his rights to make Shut Up and Jam on the Genesis).

Honestly i'm not sure. I played through the entire season and it would just switch automatically. I captured the entire gameplay from Q4 for each team. If I won I won, if I lost I lost. The after championship games are mostly developers and mascots etc., i haven't really explored the continuation yet, but I plan too... This was my favorite franchise of arcade game back in the 90's. and this version is the best ever to play through. Enjoy and please subscribe!!

Archive.org has a lot of rom packs available. This one was in the newest FBNeo Arcade Pack and I believe the filename was nbajamre.zip. You can view the ZIP and just grab what you want.
I use Batocera v37 on a Pi4B to front end my retrogames but im sure you can get it to run in Retroarch with the latest FBNeo core.

So apparently this version was an unreleased version of NBA: TE which was recalled by the NBA due to the Mortal Kombat characters and their "On-fire" animations which burnt up the opposition. Shaq, Barkley, and MJ were included in this version prior to worldwide release and removed alongside the MK Characters before it was manufactured into the final arcade board. That's is why retro gaming and restoration is such an awesome hobby!

Why was Jordan not in the original?
Michael Jordan wasn’t part of the National Basketball Players Association during a lot of the 90s. So most basketball video games from that era couldn’t have Michael Jordan in their video game unless Jordan signed off on it personally.

@@walkinphoenix45 Jordan made more money from his endorsement deals than he made playing basketball itself during the mid 90s, so he pulled himself out of the NBPA to have more control of his likeness being used. Jordan was popular enough companies had to pay him enough money to have him in their game. For whatever reason, Midway couldn’t get an agreement with Michael Jordan to have him in the NBA Jam games. Shaq didn’t appear in the console versions of NBA Jam too.
Which is quite crazy considering he was in like a hundred other games like Chaos in the Windy City and other games. I think EA bought the rights as well.. Jordan vs Bird, etc. But never in Bulls vs Lakers or anything for a long time.

I wish it was. The MK characters are all in this version which solidified the authenticity of it. The NBA rejected this build because the MK characters would fry players when on fire lol ....
