    The Tiger is an attack chopper, the H145M is not. I'd say it's an economic decision/settlement more that a replacement.

      The Tiger is very unreliable only 30-40% of the fleet are active at a time the rest is in maintenance. The Aussies are already replacing them cause of high maintenance and cost.
      Supposedly the new upgrade the French are working on is to fix that but Germany wasnt on board with that one. The H145M is a stopgap until a new system is developed.
      So Germany will be lacking a dedicated attack helicoper in the near future. The H145M can't fill that role it just dosent have the payload capability.

      The Tiger was meant to compete with the AH-64 but the problem for the Tiger is the fact that AH-64 main user is the US Army
      The US army consistently pushed for more and more upgrades to it as well has been in combat through several conflicts
      By the time the Tiger starting going to combat, it was 2009 and the AH-64 was established by then
      Case in point, the Tiger MKIII is the same Longbow capability that the AH-64 has had since the late 90s
      The same growing pains that the Tiger operators have, the AH-64 and US army already resolved during the 90s and early 2000s
      Combined with the fact that there over 5000 AH-64 built while their is just 180 Tigers
      the writing is the wall

      I think to some degree its that attack helicopters arguably are becoming obsolete.
      The next 20 years will see massive (re-) introduction and development of SHORAD systems. And they're gonna be everywhere. If it can kill a major UAV at range, it can kill a helicopter.
      At the same time, said UAV will pick up some of the attack helicopter's strengths at a much lower cost.
      A kitted out attack helicopter now approaches the cost of some fighter aircraft. The cost/benefit of an attack helicopter arguably will not be sufficient anymore.

      It is not clear that there is much use for attack helicopters in near peer conflict anymore, now even less with massive strengthening of short range air defense against drones is a given -- with most of that working against helicopers, too. This is a safe medium size short term measure and therefore a good decision.

    It is more of a late successor to the Bo 105 than to the Tiger. The question is whether the concept of a heavy attack helicopter still makes sense in today's world. The Ukraine war shows quite well that these can also be easily shot down. The H145M is cost-efficient and has good operational readiness. Its modular capabilities make it possible to respond quickly to mission requirements. Which makes it the more sensible solution overall. The German version of the Tiger has always been a flawed one due to its design as a tank destroyer without a nose cannon.

    • @china_airguns
      @china_airguns Місяць тому +8

      I see it the same way as you, why throw millions of money away when in the end the cheaper helicopter can stay in the air just as long as the expensive one - today even the expensive attack helicopters are shot down just as quickly as a cheap H145M. If the tank destroyer characteristics of the civilian model are just as good, why should you throw extra money out the window unnecessarily?! In addition, the BO 105 shows how successfully and well a civilian helicopter can be used if the tactics are adapted to it.

    • @mortenlund1418

      I also see it this way. It is great that some start to think realistic. The future does not leave much space for a slow moving chopper near any modern enemy.

      I think specialized attack helicopters can still be useful in modern conflicts. All helicopters are and always have been vulnerable to ground fire. How ever, the Tiger is mainly useless because it's just a terrible helicopter that never works most of the time.

  • @michaelneuwirth3414

    It was a sensible and very economical decision to purchase this tried-and-tested helicopter instead of a US helicopter or even a new combat helicopter of our own. The concept of the ‘combat helicopter’ has recently suffered noticeably in the Ukraine war, as helicopters are easy to locate and combat. As a liaison and light transport helicopter on its own territory, a helicopter naturally remains indispensable.

    Its a absolute masterpiece of technoligical capabilitys and it can bring back a workhorse that push up the important flyhours back to normal so that in different situations the BW can become a sustainable self sufficient multiroll unit...
    P.s. i. the past the BW doesnt had a reliable rescue system for wounded soldier... that was a shame that only the US Blackhawk pilots fixed multible times under live threaten conditions..

    The Tiger is out for a number of reasons, that's a given. The H145M is just here to fill a capability gap until a more suitable replacement is found.
    However, seeing how drones are developing, I kinda doubt there will be any real need (and therefore effort) to find a proper replacement any time soon...

There is for one the unsure situation where ever a gunship is still a practical weapon or if it is osolete ! The ukraine war is a good chase where drones have stolen the show of gunships! At the moment the H1145M is only a Placeholder until either a next gen gunship or more likey a drone takes its place ! The other thing is the relaiability issue ! The Tiger which is a good chopper when it works which rarely ever does ! Germany only has 40 of these and they only work 20% of the time 40% if you belive the promises of the MKIII upgrade! A Apache is better of with 75% but as a Placeholder to expensive ! The H145M however does work over 90 % of the time and is cheap enough for the placeholder role ! Given that germany only needs a chopper that kills tank first and formost that is good enough ! For the moment at laest!

    Attack Helicopters dont use their cannons, they use rockets and ATGM.

    So do you really need a heavy armored attack helicopter if they didnt used like they should?

  • @MrCemicalX
    @MrCemicalX 2 місяці тому +2

    If we look at how helicopters are used in Ukraine where they offer support over long distances you do not really need a Tiger or Apache for those engagements. Seeing as the H145M will be equipped with long range Weaponry and new laser guided rockets there is no way these will be used for close range engagements. More like supporting the front line from behind and then use their mobility to resupply quickly. They should also be able to fly low to avoide radar to an extent and maintenance and spare parts should be easier as well. With those aspects in mind it makes kinda sense to order these in higher numbers with long range systems rather than waiting for the next gen helicopters to be developed.

    This is an airbus eurocopter advertisement video - nothing else. The german Luftwaffe was so frustrated with the performance and the maintainability of the "Tiger" that they simply refused to start any modernisation- or mid-life-improvement-programm for this helicopter. And so the Luftwaffe searched a replacement for the "Tiger". What they wanted was something like the "AH 64 D Longbow-Apache" or even better, but the german government made it clear that any new helicopter HAD TO BE an airbus-eurocopter model. And the H145M was in use as a liaison and transport helicopter in german military and police units - so airbus-eurocopter "bolted" some more arms to this helicopter and PRESTO - Luftwaffe had to swallow it as the "ideal" "Tiger-replacement"... - to make things even better for the Luftwaffe, the german government ordered not the 150 + helicopters that the Luftwaffe had determined as their "minimum requirement" to fulfill all of its duties, but only 62 with an option of further 20... But to make things even better, the german government was willing to pay eurocopter for the now 62 + 20 ordered H145M the same amount of money that the originally planned 150 + costed in airbus-eurocopters first offer... Stupid german money at it´s best. The H145M is a stopgap-solution, nothing more. It cant do the jobs it is intended to do, and there will be too few of them to fullfill the operational requirements that the german government and the german military assured NATO to fullfill. The only people happy about the H145M are the people at airbus-eurocopter. Germany again gifted via it´s military the european aircraft industry (nearly completly situated in France!) a lot of money to receive not-suitable choppers in much to few quantities (and secured with this order with a lot of german money a lot of french jobs in France).

    The German army had huge success with the Boeing 105 helicopter even though it wasn't actually a specially developed combat helicopter. Special tank destroyer tactics were developed with the Bo 105 and these were very successful. I can imagine that this helicopter, together with new tactics, will also be very successful even if it doesn't come close to the capabilities of the Tiger. You can also talk about quantity rather than quality here - for the money of one Tiger you can almost buy two H145Ms. The H145M also has some major advantages over the Tiger that the Tiger couldn't offer, such as troop transport and medical transport.
    But apart from that, it is stupid to make comparisons here anyway, since the Tiger is a pure attack, i.e. combat helicopter, and the H145M is a multi-role helicopter which originally came from the civil, not specifically military, sector.

    Which is still great because those were pretty good.
    But it will never replace the Tiger especially if we're preparing for a new high intensity confrontation with Russian mechanised armies. If they don't want to keep the Tiger in service, fine. Then buy Apaches. But that wouldn't be "cost effective" (aka cheap).

    who needs a multi million dollar chopper anymore ? ... an octocopter strapped with high explosives is way more cost effective and nearly impossible to shoot down .. those days are gone

      Are the drones are immune to ECM methods to keep flying to their attack missions? Until independent and trustworthy A.I. used for drone ops are here, then the dedicated human operated gunships are the way to go.

    It’s still not a dedicated attack helicopter, but it’ll be good for the light attack role! Germany just needs to invest in a dedicated attack helicopter.

    • @abraham2172
      @abraham2172 4 дні тому

      Dedicated attack helicopter are either shot down in large numbers or not used at all out of fear it gets shot down, as the Ukraine war demonstrates. Why would Germany waste billions of euros it desperatly needs for other requirements for a concept that is appearently obsolete?

  • @solinvictus1234
    @solinvictus1234 Місяць тому

    A real fake step for the Germans. The Tiger wasn't at all a great attack heli (not even a great omnirole heli) full of issues to fix and not so good as his counterparts.
    Now that the Italians have released that beast of the AW249 Fenice (an UAV mothership with more firepower than an Apache and with Datalink, multidomain warfare systems and an huge data space for future AI applications) they should have chose to buy the Italian Fenice instead to go with this useless thing.

    A choice that reflects decades of abandonment by the German political class, which has a myopic view of geopolitics. A country that treats its armed forces as a burden and an unpleasant obligation of its functions that justifies everything in the name of a collective defense that understands Romanian, Portuguese and Greek brigades and battalions will defend the country. Any military enthusiast knows that these helicopters are no substitute for a thoroughbred attack aircraft. A primary error and when there is a need to use it in a real battle situation it will be a resounding failure. I feel sorry for German society that spent decades criticizing and trying to erase the country's history because everything that came from the past was wrong (fascism, that's a mistake) and in this justification it sailed under the umbrella of US defense and always failed to collaborate decently with the collective defense of the alliance. It appears to be a cowardly and opportunistic country. The SPD, Greens and FDP coalition should have suffered such a huge defeat at the polls due to the unpatriotic opinions of its members. That didn't happen. It's losing, but nothing so significant that it can't recover soon. I have the impression that the population is complicit in all the mistakes made by the politicians of this current government. If the US left Germany alone to learn and fight with resources and without decades of abandonment about its responsibility to defend its own country and not outsource its security to others.

    It's also true that Germany is suffering a severe crisis, shops are closing as they become increasingly poorer, the Tiger has probably become too expensive. If anything, they lived until the end of their lives given the economic situation
