Had a horse learn quickly it could run in them. Didn't stop well, but could run, and jump off a 4' embankment. Haven't been brave enough to try it since.
Yes they usually figure them out and can easily outrun you. I would suggest a three-way hobble, or a single leg picket. I’ll have a video on these soon.
@idahomountainbuilt By "they", do you mean horses usually figure out hobbles? What about burros? Do they do well with hobbles and not outsmart them? 😝

I usually put them around the pastern, that where they tend to end up anyways
