I'm old, have seen a lot, you're a smart guy and a cool dude.
Pete my man you are a blessing and a wizard.
Nice to see I'm not too crazy. I did the same to some poa patches in my lawn. Only mine were about 2-3 foot circles of big poa clumps. I just did a Prodiamine app on Valentines Day, but I used my weasel to break up the vapor barrier. I was a little heavier handed on my sprinkling of see then you were because the spots are bigger. Then a dash of some starter fert. I'm eager to see if it takes in 2-3 weeks seeing how I did it just a week after putting down my pre-emergent. Loving the Academy so far Pete. Keep up the awesome videos.
Pete you're very knowledgeable. Thanks for the info.
Look at this guy...all mic'd up. Loud and clear! Yep - yank em straight out.
"The best weed control on the planet". Nice delivery and twist to some great advice. thanks.
Great video. Definitely helped me out in alot of ways. Another great one slapped down by the Master Pete !!
I am getting 4", 6" & 8" thick wall steel pipe. Beveling one edge and adding a handle to the other so that I can do a more controlled blow torch burn to not only kill the seeds but also the plant and any seeds within the top couple inches of the soil.
I am on a new property with every lawn problem possible for my area so I am getting very very creative. Didn't know this before I bought the property but 10yrs ago it was a swamp / marsh that they filled in with whatever soil they could get for free before building the house. So yeah 5 zones of different soil types and qualities with different weed issues. They just tossed sod on it to cover it up before posting the home for sale.
Thanks for the awesome idea of burning them. That's brilliant.
Yeah I put down a pre-emergent at the end of August and the reason why that's when the seeds germinate they germinate before winter. I had it in my yard and that's how I got rid of it.
I fucking love channels like this. Keep doing this stuff man.
I purchased the pump foamer kit from you last year and I've been bent over the last 2 weeks pumping blue foam in my Bermuda lawn trying to kill the PA.
Pete..man, I just sprayed post emerge in my yard today and Poa annuia or however you spell it is everywhere! So glad you made this video. I did my first now of the season today. My yard looks awesome but I wondered what in the world all those seed pods were. I'll forward you some pics tomorrow how full and green things are, but chickweed and poa annuia is everywhere.
Matt Earnhardt send the pics
Bird plucks a few trivialis seed pods from neighbors lawn. Flys across the street, sees your freshly seeded irigation strips. Flys down to eat easier meal, drops trivialis seed in your yard. Not sure if that makes sense, but birds transplant fish species similar ways, made sense to me..lol
Perfect explanation.
Awesome! Just subscribed! Thanks for the knowledge man!
"Look at what the cat drug in" 😂 great video buddy
If you use your commercial mower on your personal yard, can you transfer different grasses and weeds to your yard from clients yards? Thanks!
Hey Pete - great video. Thanks so much for this. I got some poa annua in my yard after seeding ryegrass last year. I got a late start and didn't get my dimension down until pretty late in the season. My grass looks great, I just have some very small patches throughout. I've been manually hand picking them out and throwing out the poa. I think I will be able to control it and I will start bagging for awhile to avoid spreading any seed heads. I did apply Tenacity over the whole yard and I actually dinged some of the poa and turned it white. I'll keep overseeding and applying peat moss and trying to get the lawn as thick as possible.
I really enjoy the videos. Thanks
I believe you are right where it came from. Option #4 you mowed a client's yard that had it, a seed got stuck in the deck then came out in your yard when you mowed it. I have Bermuda in my backyard and fescue in the front I spray off my mower deck and mower before moving to the front yard.
Jacen Hunt no true in this case. I personal mower doesn’t leave my property. I have different mowers that our crews use
Great Tip Pete ! Ive Learned a Great deal from your Vids ! Keep posting Your Awesome Vids ! I will soon be ordering Your Grass seed ! God Bless !
And here I thought you were going to start selling the POA magic wand you developed, in your academy store! I need that! Ha. I will say two years ago I used Gordon's Bensumec. They say this is the golf course's go to for POA. I do think it helped a lot. Unfortunately I didn't use it last fall and I seem to have much more this year. I certainly hope to improve my turf as well with your program for a longer lasting effect. Thanks Pete.
I keep hearing everybody talking about pre-emergent so that would be your step 2 to kill off the seeds.
Good video!
Every Spring I always tend to get some spots of poa. I grab a few sod rolls from a local turf farm and cut them out. Seems to work but I’d like to put down a Fall pre-m but I like to seed a bit then.
Informative presentation,...Thx!
love your video you are so good and knowledgable
Great video! Surprised it took me four years to come across it.
One minor nit: poa trivialis is a perennial, not an annual. You've got to get the whole plant out, just like you demonstrate here, or it will definitely come back.
I really appreciate the "no chemicals" goal you've got. Same thing here with me. While a pre-emergent would actually be a reasonable way to deal with the poa annua, it requires too much worrying about timing for my tastes, as the pre-emergent will interfere with overseeding. In my case, I've been lucky though; the tufts with seeds are really easy to see as I walk through the lawn, and I just pull them up. I learned many years ago that weeding a lawn by hand is actually not very hard if you keep up with it. An hour or two a week is all it takes, even for a really big lawn (and a small one, maybe 15 minutes or so).
I've mostly eliminated poa annua, though of course it'll occasionally show up again because of "issues" (seeds transported in, in a variety of ways). But I'm still working on the areas of poa trivialis. Still, I've had success just pulling it up by hand and reseeding over the bare patches. It's easy to find right after mowing, because of the way the stalks bifurcate; besides just the color difference, they show up with a very different look in between all the fescue. When I pull it up, I'm careful to follow the stolons and leaders which invariably are trying to invade the neighboring areas of fescue. They are easy to extract though and they lead me right back to the main root clump, helping me ensure I get the whole plant out.
It's pretty aggressive. Sometimes I will miss a root and a little bit will come back. But the new shoots are a lot easier to pull out, once the reseeded fescue has started to take over. The trivialis trying to come back is always weaker, and so I have confidence that over time I will eventually get a handle on all the major spots in the lawn that I'm dealing with.
All that said, it can be time consuming, especially where it's gotten further along. I wouldn't blame a person for just taking a scorched earth policy, putting glyphosate or similar over an entire affected area and started again from scratch with fresh seed.
Poa triv is stoloniferous, so i used glypho since its systemic. I've also got a poa A. Problem and i started round 1 of Tenacity last week. But like you said, for triv and orchard, glyphosate is really the only way.
Any ideas on products to deal with PA on a lawn in Great Britain . Everything is banned here so was just wondering if they were not banned what would work .
Great video my dude
Sherlock Holmes of lawn care :-)
Love your channel. Any advice on putting down sod versus grass seed? Thks
"I just wanted to look" hahaha
Yeah it helped, I planted kbg and fescue and was wondering whit 1 it was. Now I see was neither
I just yanked out a bunch of these out of my lawn today. Still have quite a bit to remove. They weren't there last year and I just used a new lawn guy 2 weeks ago. I'm blaming him. Lol
Anyone have any suggestions for removing poa annua from Bermuda?
This sounds crazy, but I've Grown small pots of Tall Fescue of different sizes before my first cut. When I have to remove Poa Anna or Trivialis by hand, I have replaced those voids with the potted Grass to bypass the Seeding part. I Worry about the grass seeds not germinating due to prior Pre Emergent use. Works well. Wife thinks i'm crazy :-).
Thats an awesome idea! I might have to borrow that :D Im about to have a good mess of empty pots once plantation starts soon.
This is brilliant!
Same here I bought 2 bags of top soil and use those see through plastic cups you get at Walmart.
You my friend, tell the hard truths.
Lol "I just wanted to look"
Turflon ester does a good job on warm season weeds in your cool season grass. Clover, common Bermuda and a few others. It’s pricey but you don’t need much. Won’t hurt the fescue if you follow the directions.
Yep Triclopyr been using it for years
I thought you were going to say PreEmergent would be good, if your turf isn't as thick.
ColonelK0rn get the turf thicker. Lol
I tell you what man, we just had a new home built in Maryland last year. The builder put sod in the front yard and seeded the back yard: and I am starting to think they used a super premium, 100% poa grass seed haha, because this stuff is everywhere.
Yeah it's bad this year for sure
Would bagging a yard help stop the spreading of poa seeds when mowing?
I was going to ask the same question but see you got no answer.
I've recently found your page and have a TON of poa in my yard. This vid is somewhat helpful though. You confirmed what I've researched. You can't really kill poa in fescue. I just ordered Prodiamine and have that ready to spray for the next several years it seems to prevent future germination of it. Does anyone have other recommendations? In fall, should I do the Prodiamine spray early fall and seed weeks later? Obviously as you said Pete, choking it out is the only real option, so seeding I'm guessing needs to me heavy and maybe more often?. I'm still kind of a lawn noob but that seems logical to me.
I recommend subscribing to the Mr Ferguson channel. He's got the best looking yard in NC.
Come to Charlotte and fix my yard!!
I have a ton of Poa in my yard. Should I apply a pre-emergent this fall And over seed with kbg in the spring? I've been told to dethatch this fall with a heavy overseeding to choke out the poa. Whats your thoughts?
Yes thick turf can prevent it but how you KILL it?
How do you get your turf that thick? My lawn has bare spots all over, and I’ve overseeded a few times, but the bare spots still stay bare even with a pH of 7 after having soil tests done. I have a few trees so idk if they are possibly taking the nutrients the grass needs to survive or why the grass won’t thicken. Maybe I’m just using the wrong grass seed.
Built a house in early 2019. Chose the wrong landscaper who prepped and seeded with a tall fescue blend our 5 acre lawn in October. Talked us into hydroseeded but spread it extremely lightly. Anyway, fast forward, it barely took. I've done the best I could with what this guy and God has given me. I've overseeded, applied broad leaf killer, and fertilized appropriately. I started feeling better. Until the quackgrass. It's bad, man. Most of the backyard in spreading clumps. Front is more sporadic.
With a lot less money, not sure what to do. GCI, what would you do? For the front, I wonder if I could wipe the blades with a sponge of round-up. For the back...keep overseeding and the like. Or is it a lost cause? Would mixing some kentucky bluegrass in to help strangle it out?
Always good Pete I.m always learning something from fescue zoysia or Christianity we learn from you.
So I think I am going to do a renovation on my front lawn this year. Question is I have a moderate Poa issue in the lawn. Will those seeds be growing strong with my new seed also in the fall? I have a light brown tint to my grass now from all the Poa turning brown already. Located in NE Ohio. Going to seed with a KBG mix this fall. Thanks
Apply dimension pre emergent in mid September. If you over seed apply it mid October. Annual bluegrass will not be there the following season.
+Ct220 Taylor Sweet! I will try that! Thanks!
Can u use glyphosate and spot spray it
If you could elaborate a little more on the possible herbicides to use on the weeds it would be appreciated. Thanks Pete
can you use Fusilade on KB and rye grass?
What about birds or animals? The seeds could get stuck to their fur/feathers or even come out the other end after they get done eating.
rymaster4385 great point! Sure that could happen
I aerated last fall Andover seeded - used a good seed ( so I thought) John green $100 bag - was looking good until the past week and I am covered up in poa annua- may 9 in New England. I am not sure if it was the seed or if perhaps the aeration may have pulled old seeds from below? I would have to wonder if that 1% other in the seed is the problem?
I'm not afraid to nuke the stuff. Pulling works, but nuking does to. I can deal with a brown spot here and there.
Thought he was going to say it hitchhiked in on a lawnmower.
Did you ever try burning poa annual and poa triv?
Yes. With round up. Worked great
@@GCITurf with a torch?
@@timd5597 no. I “torched” it using round up. It’s a non selective herbicide.
hey Pete,
what would you recommend to control {kill] Lespedeza......commonly know as Japanese clover this stuff has almost infested my tall fescue
in my front yard and side yards. i applied a pre emergent this year first time prodiamine but this stuff keeps coming back and fyi would be appreciated thanks.
what do you do to get rid of poa anua
Hey Pete I am revisiting this video for some more ideas. If I spray Tenacity in the Fall when the poa’s germinate I should in theory stop most of the sproutings for the following Spring, right?
Hey Lawn Dad, I've been a loyal Tenacity user for 5 years. Love it, but it did not stop my poa annua - even spraying in the fall before and/or after the poa germinated. Last year I skipped fall aerating and overseeding to put down a heavy pre-emerge and still got a some poa this spring, but much less. I think I'm going to alternate aerating and overseeding vs pre-emerge in the fall for a few years and see how that goes...
@@patbrown6740, It’s so difficult to eradicate. My turf is pretty thick and I don’t have much but I see some every year pop up. I dig it out in these spots and it’s back the following year. Strange because I dig out the small little plants with their roots.
So, put down a southern seed in the transition zone, aleast.
Very difficult to abolish ALL weeds, some are brought in by the wind and you just can't stop that.
I hear ya get ya dirt right!
I have tall fescue grass and it’s pretty sparse. Can you please recommend a top-quality tall fescue seed. I live in Nevada where it gets hot and I have an abundance of POA. Should I just switch to Bermuda grass since it’s hot the majority of the year here in Las Vegas?
Maybe when you put seed down on your trenches a Bird that ate your new seed pooped those seeds lol.
I thought the poop thing as well.
i have tons of the poa annua on my lawn i have never had it so bad i think it came from when i overseeded my lawn how to get rid of it tons of it abbotsford bc is where i live
what kind of grass seed would you recommend for abbotsford bc thankyou
dallis grass is all over my yard and too much to pull. i need a chemical that will help me get rid of it. i do pull all the seed heads before mowing but there is so much it would take weeks to get it all pulled out.
You should sell those hats! I'd sport one
Is this the same as nutsedge?
i like a nice thick green grass
What rate do you over seed rehab (60% grass 40% weeds) yards? This is a big rehab year for me and if all goes well Ill be killing a good mess of pasture weeds and will be seeding aggressively. I have had great results with the 4lbs per 1000sqft, but Im wondering with the rehab would bumping that up a little be worth it or a waste of seed? I will be using the dreaded K31 due to heat tolerance (green year round) and traffic resistance.
Thaenatos if it’s bare ground I’d go 8-10lbs/1000.
Right now its 60% TTTF/K31/Bermuda/Zoysia 40% weeds (broadleafe and grassy). It looks great at peak times from afar but up close it needs work. Id say 80%+ of the non weed grass is either TTTF or K31 being a conservative guesstimate. The entire yard is green, usually year round, with no bare spots. But after prodiamine, post emergent applications and the heat we are about to get a consistent dose of there might be some spots. What I was going to do is put out 350-450Lbs on the field which is 5.3-6.8lbs per 1000sq ft. is that too much for an established yard? I have had great results with 4lbs in the past, but this time is different in that I want to thicken it up as much as possible. Thanks for all your help and knowledge! Between you, the lawn care nut and the grass factor I have turned around my program and am seeing amazing results due to it.
Poa Annua is tricky as all get out when you don't want it. Its absolutely gorgeous when grown intentionally on golf courses. I happen to think it's the prettiest cool season turf there is but it is extremely high maintenance.
Hey Pete, I tried several times to place an order on green country site under your company it would not allow me to check out for some reason.
Grassology4610 Pete told me in another post there having issues and working on it
Life Resurrected , thanks so much. Are you waiting to order as well ?
No I just joined the academy awaiting document. I’m sure they’ll have it figured out soon.
Life Resurrected , do you have to be a member to buy things from GCI ?
Grassology4610 I’m new to all this but the way I understand it there are certain products only members can see and buy I.e. grass seed, GCI pre-emerg blend...
I live in south eastern Michigan. What is the best kind of seed to use that is durable for pets and foot traffic and is full sun?
I’ve used several seeds here in SE Michigan. I don’t have pets, but all grasses are going to suffer a bit from foot traffic. Better to use a regenerative grass type like Kentucky bluegrass or RTF (tall fescue) or RPR (perennial rye). I overseeded with black beauty ultra last year and added GCI turf type tall fescue this spring. And I may add some GCI bluegrass (blue heat) as well.
Look what the cat drug in... haha
If my yard man mows my grass and many others, is he bringing their weed and grass seeds into my yard? And should I have him use my mower only?
If the wind blows and birds fly, you will get some weed seeds. There's not much danger of weed contamination from your service. I have 30 years of professional experience.
is orchard grass another name for that horrible quack grass? its seen its last days.
I’ve heard those seeds can last 7 years so maybe it was dug up
Great information Pete, thanks. Get your dirt right, sounds like a shirt logo!
Or maybe for underwear??
If yard has widespread poa a. should you put pre-emergent down in the fall instead of aerating and seeding?
acfuller86 HECK NO!!!!!! Get the turf thicker by aeration and seeding hard!!!
GCI Turf Services I’ve aerated and seeded this one fescue yard in particular the past 3 years with 0.00% weed seed and still crazy amounts of poa every spring
acfuller86 what about the “other crop”. Is it 0% as well??
GCI Turf Services yes 0.00 other crop also.. seems this yard had this issue before I started taking care of it but it’s not going away even with aerating and seeding in fall past 3 years and regular treatments. I guess I’ll just seed even heavier this fall is only thing I can think of
acfuller86 try letting it seed out in spring then cut lower and bag the seeds. Aerate /seed hard in fall. 2nd cut after germination apply prodiamine
Glyphosate 41% kills the quack grass and the crab grass around here
where can someone get you premium grass seed?
www.gciturfacademy.com/product/gci-premium-turf-type-fescue-blend-50-lb/
Man you’re so smart.Speedzone in my opinion kills every weed in site for me.
Grassology4610 except poa lol
I love Speedzone too but it won't kill that I don't think. I was told to use Roundup and dip a sponge in it and wipe the middle and blades with the sponge and it'll kill it without harming your normal grass.
Thanks, I just Learned little bit more
Birds, they eat the seeds and poop them into your lawn.
Man I love everything about your channel, but I can’t wrap my head around loving turf type tall fescue. Don’t get me wrong your yard looks amazing mowed, and I know you mow often, but that look it has when it’s waiting to be mowed would drive me crazy, where you can see the different fescue clumps at varying heights. It reminds me of when a dog wizzes on my kbg lawn and that one spot shoots up (if it doesn’t burn), but x10. Your a better man then me..
Some people do like the look (I do), but sure...if you don't like the way it looks, that could be a problem.
Still, consider this: TTTF is naturally more tolerant of weather extremes, with deeper roots and better ability to put up drought/flood patterns. And unfortunately, that's the climate most places in the US are heading toward as the planet heats up. Newer varieties of TTTF are even better at this. I started with a mass market regional blend, mostly perennial rye with some annual rya and fescue included, and found that the rye just does worse and worse every year. Requires too much irrigation in the summer to keep it going, and drowns in the winter. But I noticed that the little bit of fescue was doing way better; only about 15% of the blend, but more than 50% of the surviving grass was fescue.
I gave up trying to fight nature. Clearly at least in my climate (Pacific Northwest, super-dry summers, super-wet winters, with the occasional freeze) the TTTF is the way to go, so I've switched to a 100% fescue blend. It's going to take a few seasons to transition and there will probably always be just a little bit of rye hanging on, but I can already see the results. Only need a heavy watering every couple of weeks in the summer to keep a little bit of green around, none at all where its shady and/or there's naturally a bit more ground water, and when the weather turns cooler/wetter, the lawn looks fabulous (to me...again, if you hate the way fescue looks, well...can't do much about that).
I mow at around 3", and I kind of like the raggedy look it gets after a week or so. I prefer the more natural appearance to the groomed golf-course look. :)
Poa could have came from your equipment. Picked up seeds from another lawn and germinated in yours
More than likely not it. I only use my mower on my yard. Have not mowed a different yard with my mower in 7 years. But, that could happen
You really need to get to the point faster
Hi. Can I get your email? I would like to send u few pictures some lawn qeeds? I need help to identify it and kill them. They are just taking over my back yard. I don't know what to use.
Thx
Nelson
I do know this. The roundup that says it’s safe for cool season grass is a lie. My yard was brand new mid summer last year and it killed spots. So I let it mature and tried one spot last week and it killed my fescue too. So don’t buy. Wish it worked.
Timothy Henderson I would stay away from that product

POANA. Make way. Make way!
im guessing bird poop
nope, i agree ur theory about the ditch line
Ban weeds!

Yep
