Cool tutorial, will def use this technique! Didn't know about the shape to null path thing, that's cool! When you're duplicating all of the shapes, you could probably set the name of the shape to something like X1_Y1_X2_Y2 and then both in the respective path nulls and in the X position and Y position, grab the "X1", "Y1", etc from the layer name using a substring method. That way you can just duplicate the shape and the nulls associated with it and you would modify the position expressions using the shape layer name. This also applies to later when you are modifying what cells each panel covers. IDK if that makes any sense, but essentially you're using the layer name as a variable to modify the expressions of that element. I do this all the time when I'm make grids of shapes.

this is awesome. quick note, though, most grid intersections have 4 null objects on them, so you can just re-use those nulls if you don't want to have sooo many nulls in the comp. not sure if that would end up saving time or computation, though, but i prefer setting things up with as few extra layers as i can (provided it's not more work)

thanks! yes, you're absolutely right a lot of those nulls objects are overllaped and could be just one, but I found it's more easy and tidy to have 4 nulls for each pox so you can find them instantly, and in some situation you just want to affect the boxes individually (like when creating space offset) and if they share a null with other boxes it's a problem.
Also, as you say, i would end up with less nulls and that's less work for the machine but is more work for me to set it up properly, (and i'm lazy)

Or use Void free script by Battle Axe, zero solids on your project and beautiful empty guide-layered nulls, I honestly don't know what is life without Void anymore, so much better than using the default Nulls

awesome tutorial Olly. Just what i was looking for, but a piece of advice: keep the standard coordinates of X,Y. This went the other way and broke my brain - spent 2h fixing it after the fact.

Thanks, bro, but why don't you use Parent and Link directly to control the same effects?
