At my current job my co worker has made a joke saying "something is wrong with you, you are too happy all the time." I think the opposite of what he does. I think there is everything right with being happy and living in a space of positivity because ultimately that is what allows me to do the best work and be the best me I can be. Love your response to this Q and A
Would he rather have negative complaining coworkers? (of course not, though he may want more people to be "negative" like him so that he can feel less weird about himself). Positivity does not always mean "appearing happy", it can mean self-care, keeping boundaries, and genuinely being yourself!
I Love what you said here: "The future of business is about being more connected to your humanity, not less." I do believe that the more we express the truth of who we are, the more we will raise the consciousness of this planet... and experience more joy and peace at the same time. Thanks Marie, and thanks for being an uplifting force in this world.
Everyone around me always told me my kindness and empathy is my biggest strength but also my biggest weakness. They all view this as a great trait but also as a trait that begs others to take advantage of me. And I try (unsuccessfully) to suppress it but it’s just not me. When I live true to myself, I get people who DO take advantage of me or use it against me. I have no idea what to do :(
It's a double-edged sword, we are taken advantage of more often, but we also create the most good :) Increasing your capacity to love brings you more pain, but it also brings you more love! Kinda like being emotional or being numb. If you're an emotional person then you feel negative emotions more intensely, but also positive emotions more intensely. People who take advantage of your kindness and empathy...that reflects on THEIR character, not yours.
It's like going out into the desert and being a bright shining flower - you will wilt within minutes. Best to stay with the tribe who value you for who you are - with people who consider your core strengths a bonus - not a weakness.
As long as other people see that you are professional and know how to do your job you can do it in your own style. People who see positivity and kindness as a weakness have their own issues and agendas, maybe they want your job and want to make you feel insecure. As Marie said, ignore them.
Thank you so much Marie! As a musician/producer, i got a great example of "suppressing a part of who you are" and how it can lead to failure/waste of time/depression: A year ago i started working with a band that i didn't feel comfortable with, on a musical AND human level, but for some reason decided NOT to follow my inner voice telling me this wasn't right. As a result, after months and months of rehearsals: 2 members left the band 1 week before 1st gig and entering the studio... While being in the studio, things weren't working out and everyone told me to change each and every stuff in my sound, as a result i didn't recognize anything i recorded after the session. And at the end of the year, the band just splitted so the album never got released. So basically: waste of time, energy/mental health, and lost a lot of money. PEOPLE, FOLLOW YOUR INNER VOICE ;)
i loved the points you made. i'm a very sensitive person in terms of my interactions with other people, i basically wear my heart on my sleeve and it wasn't until maybe last year that someone tried to use that as an insult. it was dscouraging and i self doubted myself for a while but this video reaffirms what i know, that positivity & compassion are strengths. your outlook is really refreshing and encouraging so thank you for that!
I have been going through exactly the same thing and I tried to change myself but ended up feeling way worse. I really appreciate this video and thank you so much! :D
same thing. i was also told this by many people. dnt know .whether to change or be myself . now i understand the value of being our own self . thanks a lot
I love what you are saying about not suppressing who you are... Being authentic in business is probably one of the most important traits, as in any kind of business if people feel that you are genuine they trust you and are much more likely to work together with you
I TOTALLY AGREE...When was it ever bad to have good character..If kindness is in your nature, BE KIND, just don't be a yes man because THEN it turns into a weakness because you can't say no to people and you get pushed around...
I've been told numerous times to stop being so nice to people and let them walk over me even though I didn't see it that way. For example, when I became the captain of my dance team. I tried to rule with a more iron fist but it didn't feel like me. So I just kept being who I was and ignored the nay-sayers. Ultimately, that decision did not make everybody happy but it made me happy and I discovered who was actually supporting me.
Currently, in a work environment where I'm 90% not able to be me...taking myself seriously "as a brand" bc this can't go on ...THANKS for so many ideas on believing and going forward, giving tools and smarts from your channel/website...maybe next year, B School!?!
Thanks for this awesome video Marie! Short and sweet :) I am also a very positive and sweet person who works in a male dominated work environment (auto industry) with very negative vibes all around: disencouragement, swearing, smoking, etc. At first it got to me a little, but i stuck to what I am and i am doing better! Cheers to everyone.
You're a pretty good singer Marie 🎶 Unfortunately I have felt like I have suppressed myself before, and it happens when I talk to the wrong people face to face. If I notice that their eyes are starting to glaze over, I finish the conversation as quickly as possible and move on. It just proves that I need to surround myself with the right people. Great retweetable BTW. Thanks
Best advice I ever heard I don't even get that from my own mother , not that your trying to be a mother figure but many people can find this kind of useful suggestions. Thanks! Northern Cali here
I hit like just because of two things: the title of the video and that adorable song y'all sang to the flowers. LOL Now, I'm going to watch the rest of the video and I'm 1,000% sure I will LOVE this because this is EXACTLY the question I've been asking my entire life. Thanks so much to you and the the wonderfully positive sister that wrote this question to you. It's good to know I'm not the only person who struggles with this. ♡
Amazing ❤❤️❤️💖💖💖 thank you I truly needed too hear this . I will take the advice that’s what I have been viewed as weakness due to my positivity & kindness an I am very proud of myself for allowing myself to continue too move forward without being the old me it’s very hard but I see the process 🎉 yayyyyyy ✨✨
Great subject! I was ecourage to supress my enthusiasm In catholic primary school, thay say that being so outspoken In the academics will inhibit the participation Of The other girls In class "You have to be humble" they said. Decide to to shine is not being humble is supressing who You are. It take me years to figure it out
I need to hear that. I have a manager who confuses my enthusiasm for naivety. I am young but still with 8 years experience in the business. I enjoy working but working with someone who constantly talks down to you because of their false assumptions of you can be hard. Positive allows for easy work. Negative no room allowed to grow.
I've been in the same job for 13 years. Mostly it's not bad, but after the pandemic started I have been asked to talk more with clients, something I don't really like to do that much. Looking for another job worries me, as I'm worried I might not make it anywhere else (due to my temper and lack of patience I have sometimes), so I stick it out here, despite hating it sometimes.
Great video Marie! Love hearing that this woman just was installed as a Tech CEO. My attorney is always telling me to stop encouraging my Startups to hire women for reverse discrimination reasons. But companies run by women are just nicer board meetings to attend.
I'm sorry, and I understand. What if you tried to spend time with children outside of work? I find spending as much time with children as I can, helps me to feel more whole and human** Good luck.
I am kind to drug addicts even though it's frown upon by my peers. If they were shown more compassion they may not be addicts. I've been called naive and stupid for being understanding of others. I know I'm smart enough not allow others to scam me, this is why I let myself open to the misfits. I do not fear them because I'm confident in my ability to protect myself.
I was under the impression that I might gain some insight into becoming nicer without SEEMING weak from watching this. Key word is SEEMING because we all know not all nice people are actually nice nor are all mean people actually mean and SEEMING a certain way affects human behaviors. The CEO identified her problems as SEEMING weak and naive. You then addressed that issue by dismissing unmentioned people who gives that advice and advise her to ignore them. You should realize that the CEO identified the problems herself. There's a reason she is CEO. To add insult to injury, this advice is actually diminishing and insulting to her role as CEO because it assumes that her suspicions (a.k.a intuition) is unwarranted. Your reductive and over-generalized advice is not applicable to her because it is not addressing the issue of being kind without SEEMING weak or naive. It sounds more like coddling and pandering to feeble-minded sheep.
I wish I was more authentic with all sides of my personality, not trying to be fun and nice all the time. I can't control my fear of being judged, so I end up smiling all the time, being too attentive, sweet and people end up thinking i'm "trying too hard" "naive""I need more experience" ane it negatively impacts the way I'm being seen at every aspect
Don't worry a bit - it's a process for each and every one of us. ❤️ Change often comes with the smallest steps forward. Keep going and keep trying - you're worth it and you deserve it. 😊
like her my top 5 gallup strength is positivity, however good your advice may sound its hard to be that when the whole team or majority predominantly are not and do see this a weakness! unfortunately i did pay a price to be who i am in a cut throat environment of people with horrible corporate and human values.
I was raised by wonderful parents to respect women as equals. I am a guy who has worked in tech for many years and this video should have been gender agnostic. It's not about male dominated. I say this because lately, I am surrounded by both men and women who have double standards and toxic attitudes who view my kindness, compassion and positivity as being naive and a weakness. Also, most women really hold this kindness/positive attitude against a guy and will label him as "nice" or pushover. I have just learned to ignore these toxic people with an assertive attitude. In summary, this video would have gone a long way had it been gender agnostic. A lot of my women colleagues these days are being treated wrong by their women managers.
I thought I was a kind person (& I think I still am to some extent) but lost faith in humanity when I tried to help a stranger (who I thought was stranded) on the highway. He conned me, looted me & now threatening me to harm my family if I report to the police. I reported any way but the police is not doing anything about it. I'm very disturbed & disappointed to see how mean & manipulative the world can be. May be I was too naive & gullible.
Oh Gosh, your website's theme is amazing. But I think it would be great if you create an app for Phones (Iphone/Ipad/ Androi devices). Thank you so much for the good advice, Marie.
Oh yes! I fully agree! Especially having it for both platforms, since I have an android system and don't see myself getting an ipod in the near future.
I am very confident and happy with myself but i am sooo naiv its not good for me. Also i am very friendly and when i get mean i dont get taken seriously cause it just doesnt fit my babyface. When i get mad even my brother doesnt take me seriously. Also i got taken advantage of alot alot its like i am in a cycle that keeps repeating.
Mario, this is first video that I watched ....I'm ur fan can u help me out with this.... I get confused between two things what to choose untill time passes?
Your wrong the majority of people who are successful in the world of money are the ones who are taken seriously. People seem to only respond to people who has the power to effect them. In other words when you got them by the balls. More specifically when you got there attention.
Sometimes the whole naive thing makes me want to go mute not speak, act or anything because if you speak to people say good morning oh your two chipper/happy then when you mean or mad oh she a B??? I don't like her. Its like how am I suppose to act.
What if you have strong moral ethics and others around you, do not. Today’s generation doesn’t seem to understand words like, please, thank you, excuse me. At least those I’ve been subject to for the last 6 years. They’re a cut throat group of people , and I prefer not to throw anyone under the bus for personal gain. So I stay true to me, but a manager said to me, because of my lack of reaction to a situation, they perceived that I didn’t care. What the heck?

Most people are evil and crazy
I agree with you. I was told the same by a coworker. I choose to see the positive and not the negative.
Would he rather have negative complaining coworkers? (of course not, though he may want more people to be "negative" like him so that he can feel less weird about himself). Positivity does not always mean "appearing happy", it can mean self-care, keeping boundaries, and genuinely being yourself!
I dont know, I think he was being sarcastic, laugh with him and say "yeah, I am, right", give him a smile and then move on😅
Never stop being kind, it’s who you are. Be discriminating about what you allow and never let anyone change who you are.🙏
I've never heard of anyone viewing positivity in a negative way. In fact, we need more positive people in this world.
Oh I have. So many toxic co workers.
I hear it all the time. I'm happy and positive, I've been incorrectly called naive by negative jealous people.
people take advantage of me and find me annoying
Never mistake kindness for weakness. Anyone who thinks otherwise is not someone who understands the rules of power.
I Love what you said here: "The future of business is about being more connected to your humanity, not less." I do believe that the more we express the truth of who we are, the more we will raise the consciousness of this planet... and experience more joy and peace at the same time. Hi Marie, Your video really inspire me! - Kindness is the language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see.
Just watched your video on a similar topic your videos are helpful thanks

Thanks for the epic pictoral analogy Bren. Very easy to remember.

I think something useful I've learned is that you can still be kind but also demand respect.

a choice presentation for progressing in life , thankyou for such a straight , clear description .
Thank you!! ❤️ You're kind because you help people
I'm slowly learning this in my new position.this was a great video
I like how u said dont supress yourself
As a gay youg men, I do find myself unconsiusly supressing who I am, specially when i work with older males. It's killing me

Marie, where do you shop?!?
Wow, then there's me, who feels phony when they are being nice.
your curls are mesmerising

Act kind but be crazy
Hi Marie. Do you have Iranian origins? I have an Iranian friend, Sara, and you look very similar (both equally hot if you don't mind me saying)
+rikkiola Hahah, I'm Iranian, but Marie is actually Italian!
+Niloo S Haha... Name gives it away I guess!!
