I've been coming to Puerto Vallarta for 22 years the last four years I live here, but built a house in real mexico, I go back and forth to Canada for work, I have my favorite street places, the only time I ever got sick here was from a hamburger on the malacon
The only trouble we’ve run into is with pre-sliced fresh served fruits at restaurants and supermarkets. Some of the markets have anti bacterial sprays for sale alongside the fresh fruits and vegetables, take the hint. It doesn’t seem to be a problem if you buy whole mangoes, avocados, melons and slices them up yourself. As far as salsas go, you just can’t pass them up. I think I speak for a lot of us non Tik Tokers when I say thanks for the UT video Oscar. I know it takes a lot of work and you don’t get anything from a few hundred views but us older, gringos really appreciate the information while you’re also having to give tours, raise a family, cover all the social media platforms etc. Thank you

I have traveled all over Mexico and the only times I got really sick were in touristy places, including an apple pie from the display case at a coffee shop on the Playa del Carmen strip and a Subway sandwich in San Cristobal. In Puerta Vallarta I got sick from a fish I bought late in the day from the pescadería. I have never been sick from street food, including 3 peso tacos in Morelia, and dozens of roadside oysters and pata de mula clams in Puerto Vallarta despite no refrigeration in the hot weather. On one trip friends got sick from their hotel buffet, but I only ate street food without problems. With street food you can at least see the food being prepared, while you never know what’s going on back in a restaurant kitchen. If the stand is popular the salsa will be replaced frequently. Places with lots of turnover and frequented by locals are likely to be reliable. If there isn’t a line of customers maybe that isn’t the best stand to try! It is important to get some Microdyn/Biodyn and soak all fruits and vegetables with a few drops before eating, although when I bought fresh figs on the side of the road both the seller and Mexican local I was with assured me that they had been cleaned for immediately consumption unlike fruit from the market. I have ordered fruit smoothies from street stands all over Mexico without issues. If you do get sick, you can usually find a pharmacy with a consulting doctor on site either for free or small (100 peso) fee.
I agree with you, as a food protection specialist, I would not advise you to eat salsa that has been left out. People double dip, flies can land, bacteria grow in those optimal conditions. Ask for fresh salsa, if they cannot or will not provide it, leave. So, ask before you order.

I have gone through that in different countries and because of the local water use to wash the vegetables and not drinking bottled water , you will end up sick for days . When I got older , I don’t have a cast iron stomach anymore.

10 years of spending winters in mexico, I've only had food poisoning once. That was Thai food I had delivered to the house in PV. Never had problems with street food.

Hello my friend!!! Im in your beautiful town. It have stunning views. we are staying in conchas chinas. We had tacos yesterday , tacos pepes and we AVOID salsa and get the tacos to go , we eat in la Palapa even tough they dont supous to let us eat there , we consume and they let us eat there . Awesomeee service . Now LINDO MAR sux , they dont let us go to the beach by the hotel , we need to consume and we said yes but they want us to do the beach club !!! Honestly we hate the food and service is bad bad. We stayin in conchas chinas in a private condo whit a rent car so we can go everywhere. But no LINDO MAR they dont have a good costumer service . My daughter and I got sick from a salad we shared when we ate at senor frogs. No one else got sick, but they didn’t eat salad.
I have been sick a number of times over the years in Mexico, mostly during our first vacations from the buffets at the all-inclusives. However for the last several years we've rented a condo in Puerto Vallarta, we buy our own groceries and visit our favorite restaurants and street taco establishments often without any probems. There was once though in Mazatlan, I got food poisoning likely from one taco place. Later in our vacation I went back to that same place and kept an eye on our waiter. He handled the wash cloth to wipe our table, the menus, the garbage cans and a hose. He then took tortilla chips out of a bag and put them in a bowl for us. Not once did he wash his hands. The key is to bring your own sanitizing wipes. Remember how you got to that restaurant. A dirty bus or taxi. What I've learned from eating out, if it tastes funky, it probably is.
We go to Mexico every year for two weeks and every year we get sick for couple days
I've been going to Mexico for 2 months every fall or winter for years, traveling all over the country. I have never once gotten sick (nock on wood). I sure haven't held back on the street food, lol. It's funny how different people tolerate the food differently.

PV has some incredible street food... it would be a shame to miss it. Me and the GF are lucky we have cast iron stomachs LOL. the cabeza tacos at the stand near the Farmacia Guadalajara are to die for

In a restaurant around $400 pesos per person, street food $150 pesos per person, per meal and this is average
Oscar, I know people's priorities are different. I have one tip that would cut back on at least 70% of people getting sick. No matter what country you may come from, my advice is universal.
HAND WASHING, HAND WASHING, HAND WASHING
This goes for food handlers and food eaters! I'😂m from the US, although that really doesn't matter , but I would like to say that from all the PV videos, my wife and I have seen, NO FOOD PREP people have worn 'food handlers gloves'. Back in the US, if i dont see gloves on, i walk out. Also to mention, if you use the restroom, wash your hands after, and please, please DON'T TOUCH THE DOOR HANDLE bare handed.
We are not germaphobes, but after 30 years in the hospital business, we know what can happen. My wife, RN retired after 36 years, and i retired from 25+ years working in operating rooms as an x-ray tech !!!!
