They had it ALL. Talent, musicality, liveliness and fun. Those were the good old days. They all stood around one microphone and just played. How musicians have complicated it since. The Dubliners brought the listener the very heart of any song or tune... I'm learning the Donegal Reel on banjo right now ;-)
Not musicians, but business. And business only does what entices more money out of our pockets, in the end. If people didn't leave good, simple music by the wayside in droves in favour of a huge stage with lights and smoke and pyrotechnics... we could but them all out of business, if we would all just make music where we are. But thought music flows easy once the channel is worn, such wearing takes years of relentless action. And most would rather open a prepackaged bit of music carefully curated for them by a no doubt trustworthy style influencer... I've had more fun playing tin whistle alone in a field than I've had at any commercial music concert. Hopefully our children can recapture that immediate connection with live music and the love and life that comes with it.
some kid on a ukulele gets 45 million hits on youtube and this only gets 37,246, people dont know what real music is any more, Barney and co are pure class!
"The Dubliners" certainly recorded "The Donegal" and "The Longford Collector", but here the 2nd tune [ just in case anyone goes looking for it ] is the reel known as "The Boyne Hunt". The type of whistle being played is almost certainly a "Generation", as that would have been the only whistle in the key of "D" available when that film was made.
I'm only 1/6th Irish, mate, but trust me - my son is 4 and he's already got a tin whistle. His brother will be born in less than a month and he'll have his own. Those of us who love and respect our heritage will remember and pass it on.
I love the wtf look ciaran gives barney when he falls off the fretboard at 0.48 ha ha, great playing nonetheless, luke Kelly had taken a year out at this point to go to England for a year to study and learn from ewan mc coll so this is either 1964/65, John sheehan and Bob lynch came in to fill in for luke, when luke came back bob left and John stayed, so even though this isn't quite the classic lineup they still gelled great together, all round great musicians the lot of them
Brain tumor? Possible, but unlikely. Anything with tumors are iffy, as they tend to spread(metastasizing) and come back even if removed, and anything with the brain is MASSIVELY iffy, the margin you have is EXTREMELY slim even with things placed accessibly. Put the two together? You're badly in the shit.
To anyone learning from this video, the second tune is not the Longford Collector. They did record Donegal Reel/Longford Collector back in the 60's but the second tune in the above video is The Boyne Hunt.
great playing - amazing that of all of them only John Sheehan is still going. I cant recall the name of the 2nd reel but definitely NOT 'Longford Collector'
The 2nd tunes not even a 1st cousin of The Donegal Collector , Its a 3rd cousin once removed called The Boyne Hunt , I said Hunt lads , Hunt with a H .
Can anyone help find a song !? Been searching for hours... Something called luxio/ruxio or whatever. Remember a whole bunch of lyrics ( do wadda dayyy do wadda dohhhh somethingsomething blablabla FOR RUXIOOOO... ) and the melody but neither Google or Shazam can help.
listening on the radiogram to the records, while the pig's feet boiled in the scullery. so they would be ready for the match at Croker...........Up the dub's
Barney Mckenna at his peak, his very best, one of the sweetest tenor banjo-men ever and Ciaran Burke plays a hell of a tin pennywhistle !!!
They had it ALL.

"The Dubliners" certainly recorded "The Donegal" and "The Longford Collector", but here the 2nd tune [ just in case anyone goes looking for it ] is the reel known as "The Boyne Hunt".

Could Luke have survived his ailment with proper treatment these days? I still mourn the bloke.

The folks I loved so well :)
To me, Barney McKenna is "Leading".
To anyone learning from this video, the second tune is not the Longford Collector. They did record Donegal Reel/Longford Collector back in the 60's but the second tune in the above video is The Boyne Hunt.
Thank you. This is a fantastic video!
The second song is the Boyne Hunt.

The dubliners in their infancy
Awesome talent
Pure Magic!!
Classic Dubliners! 🇮🇪
The Devil pulled out his flute, Ronnie Drew pulled out a Bottle Of Irish Whiskey.
The Devil sat down and the rest was his story.
great stuff. thanks for posting.
The original Dubs at their best; apart from their vocals , their instrumentals are the best!
Amazing! This is what the Irish youth of today are missing out on! Their identity, it's dying on it's feet!
wow, amazing stuff, thanks for uploading!
Gold
Fantastisch!
thanks!!!
Damn I think their instrumental talent in sometimes overshadowed by their vocal talent.
Bam! There's your origin of traditional bluegrass music
Brilliant, Irish Folk at its very best
Ciaran Bourke at 0:49 lol
Think this is the only footage with Bob Lynch while Luke was gone for a bit.
They all looks so young but I suppose I did too then.I suppose because we all were young.
The second reel is the Boyne Hunt

I always thought that fella second on the right was Luke, but its not is it, i forget his name now, looks like Charlie Manson hahaha
The 2nd tunes not even a 1st cousin of The Donegal Collector , Its a 3rd cousin once removed called The Boyne Hunt , I said Hunt lads , Hunt with a H .
Thankyou! I was so confused why my longford collector was completely different!
@NardolTheElf luke isn't in this video. from left to right: ronnie, john, ciaran, bobby, barney.
The second tune is Boyne Hunt, not Longford Collector.
Fellow playing the Classical Guitar ...is it Bobby Lynch? Anyone know?? Thanks .....!
0:49 ciaren picking fights
looks like a Generation Tin Whistle, though I cant tell the key. the most common keys are D,C,F and Eb
It should be D
I wonder in what Key that tin whistle is and what whistle he is playing o_o
listening on the radiogram to the records, while the pig's feet boiled in the scullery. so they would be ready for the match at Croker...........Up the dub's
Best group of all time. Barney looks like a chubby Fidel Castro.
@haui61 Thought as much. Bobby seems a little short, doesn't he.
Whos the little fella between Barney McKenna and Ciaran Bourke?
Bobby lynch i think his name is he went to america early on in their career to go on his own

A yes, the rare but still grand: Bobby Lynch. Shame, would have been nice if he stayed when Luke got back, ah well. All is well.
