Thanks Dave. This was a great album to work on. Even during the pre-production phase I had a feeling it was going to be special. I think the songs are all quite memorable, but listenable and still heavy and technical.
You're welcome, and definitely all of the above. Your precision, speed and power were just awesome. One of the best to ever get behind a drum kit. Thanks for taking the time to reply.
Dude your playing on this record is phenomenal. I couldnt believe it back when the record first came out and its still one I return to now for drumming inspiration. I dont think any metal drummer before or since has acheieved the intensity and creativity you put into "We are the Nightmare." Thanks for your contribution to the art!
Hey Anthony, thanks very much. That album is definitely up there for me, working with some really talented players. It was a great fit for my drumming approach and style when we were putting all the songs together. They were really fun to play live as well.
Hey man, that's great to hear. I really love the intro to Failure's Conquest as well. It's all about finding the right way to fill space, leave gaps and build the whole thing dynamically. Thanks for all the support!
Thanks my man! This was a kick ass album to put together. I really tried to create some great music and push the band to their limits. Thanks for the support!
Hi, I haven't worked on any other songs thus far. As far as I know this is the first track with real drumming! I'm hoping to work on more in the future as I do play just about every conceivable style of drumming for every situation. This song just showcases what I'm really know for. Thanks for the comment!
When i listened to this album for the first time, i didnt understand shit, but i really liked it, within the next few plays i became to understand this was going to be the best metal album i ever heard. And i listen to LOTS of styles and bands. Every time i listen to songs like this i am filled with some strange and powerful energy that is only compared to feelings i had the first time i discovered the best bands of my life. Great performance, thank you for this album man, i dont know why the hell you are not on the band anymore, but thats for sure the reason Arsis never got to this level again. They should know this was the way. I play guitar, but when i see you, you make me wanna start to play drums ! Cheers!
+l Raul l Hi Raul. That's great to hear how much you still enjoy this album. It was an awesome piece of music to be a part. I really did my best to push the band to it's full potential musically. I think at the time, it was just the right combination of musicians working together. If you think this is your favorite Arsis album, let people know and tell them why! Thanks for the support.
@@House_of_Grind I know this is a pretty old comment and video, but I've just gotta say I love the energy you brought to the band with this album. This song and Sightless Wisdom are the epitome of Arsis at its best
@@VermilionGates Thanks for the comment. I really enjoyed writing and performing the drums on this album. It's unfortunate that things didn't work out longer with the band as it would have been great have done at least 1 more album together. Musically, it was a great combination I thought.
Arsis was one of the first metal bands I listened to and when I started playing drums I tried to take a lot of fills and beats from We Are the Nightmare. Great album but so difficult to play haha
Hey, thanks man. I worked really hard on this album. I wanted to see the band go to a different level. The guitar players were really great on the album too. I think my favorite track is A Feast for a Lair's Tongue. A lot of fun parts to play. Thanks for the support, not sure why there aren't more views, lol
Can we possibly get you to play We are the Nightmare for us please? Song that made me fall in love with your playing. That and always made me want to add one of those firecracker snares to my set up haha either way as always mindblowingly incredible playing man!
one of the very best top 3 "metal drummers" on the planet, definetly, and some of the best musical metal records ever composed. (I don´t belive in luck, but...) Best of lucks on all your projects. Just waiting to buy the new Deeds album. Cheers from mexico.
Hey man, Well i have a few other things in the works but maybe I some point I can put that video together. It depends how many views we can get for this one first though ;) Thanks for the support!
this still amazes me man, you're so good at drums. and your kit sounds BEAUTIFUL! you should consider doing we are the nightmare as well (like the outro) for old times sake. keep up the good work!!!
Thanks bro. I'll definitely be looking into doing another song pretty soon. I don't know which direction I'll go. Glad you enjoy the video and thanks for the support.
Awesome man. I'm hoping to have it all finished up and released by the weekend. I think it'll be really cool to let everyone interested in the game see what goes into putting together music for the track "Archangel". Check back soon and thanks for the support!
Hey man, well at this point I just look within myself. Over the 20 something years I've been playing I've learned from and taken inspiration in from so many different places. From metal and progressive technical albums, to brutal death metal metal and black metal albums. I've studied and learned about what makes them tick. I never really feel like I have a lack of ideas at this point. I just have to delve within myself to pull out the ideas. Hope this answers your question, thank you!
It would be cool if you could upload only the drum track... I'm trying to learn this song (guitar) and nobody has done a backing track of this amazing song... having only the drum track (and from you) would be a dream come true.
Thanks bro i'm glad you enjoyed it. I dunno if I'd call it a cover though since I did the drumming on the record? It was one of my favorite tracks for sure. Thanks for the support!
One thing about this album that kinda threw me off at first was that second snare. its so different!! but I love it.. took me a while to get used to it but i never heard it on any of album accept this one. Amazing drumming!! cheers from canada
Hey man, I did sell online lessons for a little bit but it was so hard to fit into my schedule. Do you live in Connecticut? Also, I'll give you a couple things to think about. Remember that a metronome is your best friend. As boring as it may be, the more time you spend with one the better your internal tempos will become. It's important to know what different techniques feel like at certain tempos. Second, train each limb and each side of your body equally. Try to balance yourself.
That would be amazing. And thank you for being such an amazing inspiration haha. Quick question. Do you possibly give lessons at all? Or do you have any tips or a practice regiment for working on your hands? Just how utterly precise and fast your hands and blasts are is one of things i absolutely love about your playing. Thanks in advance!!
Space Chief Thanks man. I use an open style of playing, so there is no crossing over. It really makes me think in interesting ways when writing parts. I started playing this way about 10 years ago and haven't looked back since. Thanks for the support and please check out some of my other videos and past albums.
Expect it before the end of the year. As far as availability I'm not sure yet. There will definitely a way to get the physical CD's, i'm not sure if it'll be in stores or through mail order yet. Trust me though, the artwork and lyrics are a big part of the experience, there should be T-shirts available for purchase as well. Hopefully I'll have some news in a month or so. Thanks!
Thanks! It was fun to write and figure out how to play. I wanted something that was dynamic and a bit all over the place while still holding the groove.
Hey man, just wanted to say you are freaking awesome. I decided to check your drumming out after listening to the Arsis album that you were on. I am learning the drums right now, and I was pretty inspired by the different ways you drummed on that album. Question, were you using the toms on the usual snare parts? That is what I was making out of it, and I thought it sounded really awesome and creative. I might just incorporate that into my drumming!
Thanks man! Glad you enjoyed that album, I 'm really pleased with how it came out, I tried to push the band musically for sure. I have a fairly long discography if you'd like to check out some of my other past work. As far as your question, i'm not totally sure that I understand what you're asking. What do you mean by usual snare parts? I'd love to give you an answer I just want to make sure that I'm answering what you're asking. Maybe try and ask it a different way? Thanks for the support!
Blastfest03 For instance, lets just go basic. On a basic rock beat, on 2 and 4, you would normally use a snare. Instead of the snare, you were using your tom as the "snare". Even on some blast beat parts, it sounded like you were using your tom instead of the snare. Is that what you were doing? I also noticed it sounded like you were hitting the rim of your snare drum. Or was it just the snare drum? I will definitely check out your other music as well!
MetalReviewist Hey man, well I have 4 snare drums on my kit. Two 14" snare and two 10" snare drums so you may be mistaking the snare for a tom. I also don't typical play rim shots, so it's just the sound of the snare itself. Hope this answers the question, thanks!
Hey man, first of all. This album is dope. This song being one of my personal favorites. Question tho, since this is quite possibly the most technical album i've heard arsis put out, i gotta know, do you guys ever consider writing stuff in odd time signatures? Or do you guys just try to mix up the standard 4/4 as much as possible?
Hey man, thnaks for the comment! It is a combination of both. This album was generally based around guitar ideas and then we worked through them and enhanced some of the orchestration with additional ideas. Arsis does write some odd times but also uses straight even time often as well. In some of my other works, the time signatures are mostly odd. Thanks for the question
For me this was arsis at it peak, without him it just wasn't the same. I've been looking for this video for years.
Thanks Dave. This was a great album to work on. Even during the pre-production phase I had a feeling it was going to be special. I think the songs are all quite memorable, but listenable and still heavy and technical.

Still the only album I constantly come back to because the drums are so sick. The intro to Failure's Conquest is absolutely insane.

Who do you get your inspiration from? Reminds me a little of Mangini
archangel - elena,malukah and clark s. nova
what about Infant Annihilator :P
Did you also record the drums for "Coming Home" by Elena Seigman? Or was archangel the only one?
Do you play with heel toe technique ? I never saw it.
