    Another great video thank you! I am on a tight budget so bought some square fabric storage totes from the dollar tree I am going to try. I worry about the dye as they are colored, but the grow bags are colored with black ink as well. So tough to get away from toxins. Wish me luck and really love this channel!

    Thank you for all of the wonderful videos! Quick question...do you prune the suckers on the tomato plants? Thanks in advance

    • @TowardGarden
      @TowardGarden  Рік тому

      Good thing about determinate tomatoes such as this variety is that they do not need to be pruned. To my experience, if you prune them, the plant will be stunned and won't grow to its best bushy size. More side shoots, more fruits you will get. Hope this helps and thank you very much for your comment!

    Do you have any issues with splitting on your bigger tomatoes in grow bag? I struggle with it, our growing season is quite hot and wondered if bags are drying out to quickly or I am just watering too much. Trying sub irrigation to minimize the problem.

    • @TowardGarden
      @TowardGarden  8 місяців тому

      Yes, I've experienced splitting on large tomatoes too. It happens if there is inconsistency in watering, a dry period and then too much water. And grow bags are more prone to that. If by sub irrigation you mean bottom watering, I won't suggest that. Free drainage will benefit plants more. If you can't keep them consistently moist, I'd suggest to add a bit of Water Storing Crystals amzn.to/3rwkOWF (but not too much) to the soil at the time of planting. This will help with keeping soil moist when too hot. These crystals DO store water really good, so just make sure you don't overwater plants. Hope this helps and thank you for getting in touch!

    Hello from Ventura County Z9b. Do you use grow lights or a heat pad when starting your tomato seeds?

    • @TowardGarden
      @TowardGarden  4 місяці тому +1

      Hello👋 I am in 9b too and don't use heat mat nor grow lights. Since zone 9b don't have frosts, you can start and keep your seed trays inside (at 60-75F). As soon as they sprout, move them outside to 4-6 hours of early morning sun (use a beach umbrella or shade cloth if too sunny). If night temperature drops below 50F (10C), you can bring them inside at nights. Otherwise they can stand cool temperatures. Hope this helps and thank you very much for your comment!

    I love your videos! I have some growing in buckets inside (Iowa) that started from rotting tomatoes, and they are 4’ tall - but they aren’t putting out any flowers. They are under grow lights. Is there anything I should do? Thank you!

    • @TowardGarden
      @TowardGarden  Рік тому +1

      It is hard to tell without seeing them. I am guessing either the soil doesn't contain phosphorous, or most probably it is the light issue. If they are 4ft tall and no flower, it means the light is not enough and they seek more light by growing taller. I don't usually use grow lights but I know that you will need a lot of them for a tomato plant. So, if it is the food, try to feed them with a liquid fertilizer high in phosphorous. For organic liquid fertilizers, Dr. Earth Root Zone (0-2-2) or Bud & Bloom booster (1-2-1) are great choices. For non-organic liquid fertilizers, you can get Liquinox 0-10-10 Bloom fertilizer. But if the issue is the light, you need to provide more lights (a small green house outside works way better than keeping them under grow lights).Hope this helps and thank you for your comment!

    Hey! Where do you put the seedling tray in the initial days? Under direct sun or in a shaded area?

    • @TowardGarden
      @TowardGarden  Рік тому +1

      I have a shed like room in my backyard where I keep my seed trays until the seedlings sprout. As soon as they pop out, I move them outside in indirect sunlight (under a patio umbrella), or 3-4 hours of direct early morning sunlight. I hope this helps and thank you for visiting.

    • @TowardGarden
      @TowardGarden  Рік тому +1

      For pests I try to monitor and control as soon as I see signs of any pest presence . If needed, I usually use neem oil mix as pesticide. For leaf miners and caterpillars, you can use either B.T. or Spinosad (Monterey Garden Insect Spray). I hope this helps and thank you for visiting.

    My tomatoes are being eaten by green caterpillars, I've been picking them off by hand but they keep coming back, do you know any ways that I can get rid of them permanently? One of my tomatoes also has some yellowing leaves even though I've been watering them thoroughly, do you know how I can help them?

    • @TowardGarden
      @TowardGarden  Рік тому

      Most probably these are Tomato Hornworms. If picking them is not enough, two of most effective and organic pesticides you can use are B.T. or (Bacillus Thuringiensis) and Spinosad. B.T. is a naturally occurring bacteria and one of the most common pest control to kill caterpillars. It can be applied as a liquid or powder and you can find several varieties certified as organic. It is hard to comment for the yellow leaves without seeing them, but maybe it is fungal disease like Tomato blight. Again it is hard to tell. I hope this helps and thanks or visiting.
