  • After a year skimming low down across the southern night sky, the dance of Jupiter and Saturn is almost complete. This short video shows these two bright planets two days before conjunction, which will occur on the 21st December. I've used a Celestron C90 telescope and a Canon 700D EOS camera. The planets are at their closest for hundreds of years and make a great naked-eye, binocular or telescopic sight

Congrats on getting them this close, Graham! Trying to find an opening in the clouds is tough to do this time of year. We're still socked in with clouds and with more snow on the way, so I'll probably miss it. I sure would like to get Saturn after the 21st when it's over to the right of Jupiter, but the extended forecast for us is crap. Ah well, hope you have a few more clearings to catch them. :)

Jayling - Ohio Skywatching Thanks Jayling. Thick cloud and light rain now as the sun sets, maybe better tomorrow. I hope the snow isn’t too deep - the weather on the US east coast has made the TV here but nothing from Ohio featured just yet. Lots of mud underfoot in a classic British December!

    Great video, Graham.
I used my C90 last evening to have a look at both the planets. Saturn's rings looked great as usual but unfortunately I could barely detect Jupiter's bands because it's so low in the sky. I wish I had been able to see Jupiter's bands and Saturn's rings in the same field of view. That would have been a wonderful sight :)

First Graham I want to thank you for all the help and inspiration your videos have been as I began my astronomy hobby 10 months ago!
Here on the coast in Southern California USA we have been blessed with clear skies for the last week or so. It has been amazing to follow these two as they get closer and closer. Last night was especially clear and I was in awe to see them in the same field of view. I'm using a Celestron Starsense Explorer DX 102mm refractor with a 17mm Plossl and a 2x Barlow (just visual, no camera).

Many thanks. I’m glad you’ve had good views. Here in the UK it has been the wet and windy kind of winter month rather than cold and clear, so I was glad to grab any record of the event, albeit not my best work I’d say! Cloudy here as the sun sets now so the quick trip to the garden last evening was worthwhile. Clear skies to you and thanks again for the kind words. Graham

Hi, great capture. I’m going to get my C90 soon. I just want to ask what other accessories do you consider a must or often use when using it to do astrophotography? The finder that goes with it isn’t helpful, will any red dot finder fit on it? Do you use Barlow and what magnification would you say gives the optimum image result? Do you use other eyepiece besides the one that came with it? And lastly, what tripod (for traveling) could you recommend for this? Thanks so much in advance!

Thanks. There are a range of finderscope mounts but the "Synta" type on the C90 is very common - just check the picture of any potential RDF purchase carefully. There are various types of RDF around. The plastic ones can be OK but i suggest buying a metal one, as the direction adjustment to line it up with the C90 scope will be more robust. If you have a DSLR then you only need a T-ring to connect it to the scope. For astrophotography of planets I use a ZWO ASI-120MC (cheapish, good starter unit) as a dedicated planetary camera, with a 2x barlow. Avoid more the 2x with the C90 I'd say. Maksutovs like the C90 don't need expensive eyepieces. The supplied 32mm EP is quite good. I suggest you could look at another EP in the 10-12mm range to get closer, or get the barlow and try this first with the 32mm. I wear glasses so i look for EPs with long eye-relief. If you don't then plossls are fine with the C90. Tripods... not so simple! Get the scope and see how it feels. Be careful not to use too light a tripod, as it may fall off (only once..). You have to chose if you want a photo tripod or one designed for astro. Have a think. Clear skies, Graham
