Asshai: Dany's Greatest Mystery in ASOIAF

  • This video covers the mystery of Asshai, how it's relevant to Daenerys Targaryen's past & future, and how GRRM continuously changes the story of ASOIAF. Watch how I expertly connect Lemongate, Elissa Farman, the Tattered Prince, Euron Greyjoy, and the Meereenese Knot in a video that's supposed to be about Dany and Asshai. If there's one thing I know how to do, it's taking one quote from TWOIAF that states the Azor Ahai prophecy spread west from Asshai and make it loosely tie in with Rhaegar and Aegon the Conqueror's dreams culminating in a Daenerys / Jon Snow Azor Ahai combo meal.

      Agreed, one of my biggest writing pet peeves is when a piece of world building that was intended as a throwaway line or to flesh out the background is explained, often in an unsatisfying and lore breaking/twisting way. Destiny 2 was the fucking worst at this. Let mysteries stay mysteries.

    I always felt that Daenerys’ "lightbringer" would be the dragons. She didn’t sacrifice Drogo and Rhaego to get them, but they were hatched out of the pire Drogo was burned in, and she would probably never perform that ritual if she hadn’t lost Drogo and Rhaego in the first place

    Speaking of Glass Candles, imagine if Marwyn actually taught Daenerys how to create one? Maybe he found some insights and knowledge through the lost pages of Signs and Portents, or maybe learned something in Ashai. But without dragons, such a creation was impossible. It would be cool to see the return of magic personified, in a way, by the creation of a piece of magical technology not forge from scratch in centuries.

    I think the Dany's plot on book 2 was meant to have Dany travel throught the Jade sea visiting different locations and reach Asshai at the end maybe the house of the Undying original location was Stygai and Euron who is involved with the Warlocks and is mentioned by Theon several times in the book could appear as someone trying to marry Daenerys so he can get the dragons, thinks wouldn't work as Euron planed but he would conect with some higher power at Stygai and change plans deciding to go to Valyria by himself where he would find the dragobinder horn, maybe it was to long and Martin decided to contain the story in Asshai

    Theory! Danys eggs come from the dragon Dreamfyre. Dreamfyre is literally the mother of the dragons. So Daenerys is symbolically taking the role of Dreamfyre. Maybe the name ‘Daenerys’ means dream fire in Valyrian. ‘Dae’ can mean dream (Daenys the dreamer suits this) and ‘Erys’ or ‘Nerys’ can mean fire . The idea of dream-fire seems to fit, in the sense that it represents psychic power, and resonates with the idea that within the weirnet there is a magical godhead of dreams/ dreamers and their power is symbolically a type of divine fire within trees.

    Part of me believes that the initial Bran chapter (famous for coming to George in a flash of inspiration brought about by the phrase "the summer snows) was supposed to be a part of "Avalon," which he refers to as his unfinished work-in-progress before switching over to develop ASoIaF. I think he must have recognized that the weight of this chapter was significant enough to warrant its own story, so he ultimately repurposed all his old ideas and fused them together. But what do I know? This is all pure speculation anyway.

    As I was watching I realized something possibly interesting. You mention the assumption Euron used the egg to pay for an assassin. Maybe, but maybe Euron did something more interesting.
    You pointed out that Euron, Mirri, and Marwyn have been to Asshai. What if that's the connection? Could Euron, his myrish friend having failed, designed the marriage to Drogo to hatch his eggs? It draws the line between Mirri and Euron. Sending Dany into the Dothraki sea with the eggs toward Mirri who helps Dany hatch them. They arrive in Qarth where we believe the Pirate King began his journey to Westeros from after having seen the dragons had hatched.
    So Euron fails to hatch an egg and goes to Illyrio having her married to Drogo. Explains how he got them, why he'd give her such a valuable gift. He did it to pay off a debt to Euron. Euron has his horn, he's obviously prepared for Dany to have hatched them, which makes him the only person in the world who seemed to be ready. If he set it all up, his plotline and Illyrio's actions make more sense no?
    This removes the need for Dany to go to Asshai. She can learn this truth anywhere. It may also explain Quaithe. She may have learned of this plot while she was in Asshai and has been trying to disrupt or hyjack it? Or she was a part of it, ensuring Dany actually managed to do it?
    Crazy?

Let's say she just showed up at the Wall by herself, ya, that's not going to work, she ended up with the only King who went there. She is, of course, being led to Jon, it's just taking her some time to realize that.

    "Asshai is large enough to contain Volantis, Qarth, Old Town, and King's Landing"
    I have no concrete theories, but were those 4 particular cities included for a good reason? Does anybody have a guess? Do they all have glass candles?

  • @lutilda
    @lutilda 2 місяці тому +1

    I have the theory that Ashai doesn't have children because it's not a place where people are /from/ only a place you can live/ visit. People may stay there the rest of their lives but no one grows up there. It's focused on learning and practicing magic. So I see it functioning kind of like a university campus. Plus, its more than inhospitable, so it's not a place where it would be safe to raise a child.

  • @MysticOfTheSands
    @MysticOfTheSands 3 місяці тому

    The size of the city would make sense if it was at one point the capital of the GEotD. Which is what I think it being compared to 4 capital cities (counting Volantis as successor to Valyria and Qarth as former capital of a larger Qartheen territory--plus it's slogan as "greatest city that ever was or will be") is meant to suggest.

    I hate to say it but at the Moment that Person is Dead! At least that's what we are told to believe and even if he comes Back from the Dead or was never dead, that is not the true Love of a Mother. And that's Daenerys's Archetype in the Books, that of a Mother. Not a very good one, but a Mother nonetheless and the one true Love of a Mother, a true Mother, are always her Children. We are told more than once, that a Mother loves no one like she loves her Children, Cersei says so, Catelyn also implies it more than once and even Olenna gives us hints about this by how she talks about her own Son but always helps him to gain more Power for House Tyrell.
    So Daenerys has to sacrifice her Children to defeat the Others, which means her Dragons.

      So just a thought, this theory is great my only issue is, and it’s not a you or your theory issue so much as a George’s problem kinda issue is if it’s aiming for a low magic ending like the show, where dragons die and the others are defeated…I feel like there’s no place for super high magic kgb surveillance state king bran in an ending of no more dragons because as we know magic has really only returned in the book series to the west, at least when the dragons came back to the world. It breaks the world building kinda

    Is there any chance the dragon travels to Asshay with Danny's dead body and ... her story may pick up from there? Maybe Drogo the dragon sacrifices his life to bring her back? Because I feel the part where Aria kills the Night King (if that will ever happen in the books) is just the beggining of the story of what created the Night King in the firat place. And whatever that is, it is still behind the wall. Also ... Bran's powers seem a little missued. There is an aftertaste he is destined for so much more ... like actually fly into a Dragon perhaps.

    So here’s my thoughts about Dany’s dragon eggs: I truly do believe they are Dreamfyre’s eggs, the dragon eggs which were stolen by Elissa Farman. We have been told the story of their theft quite extensively (Elissa Farman’s whole story is easily one of my favorite things in all of ASOIAF lore, such an exciting story of exploration and personal liberation), so I do think we as the audience are being told the origins of Drogon Rhaegal and Viserion, but I just cannot understand why Illyrio Mopatis would lie about where he bought them. So either they’re not Dreamfyre’s eggs, or somehow Dreamfyre’s eggs ended up in Asshai. Why would Mopatis have bought them in the Free Cities but then lie and say he got them from Beyond the Shadow?

    12:25 this makes it sound as if dragons come from Dragonstone. If this were the case then dragons would dominate Westeros. More likely dragons originally come from the near inhospitable land south of Valyria which is home of many hundreds of bizarre creatures. They could have been transplanted to the underground furnace of Valyria to aid in their hatching by the Targaryians and other Valyrian peoples.

    i wonder if a flashback scene could show asshai in its prime during the great empire of the dawn its no coincidence dany has purple eyes just like the amethyst empress the last true ruler of the empire before the bloodstone emperor i think it would be really cool if some members of her family escaped the bloodstone emperor and founded valyria plus i really dont believe valyrians created or found dragons i think they always had them but a lot of info got lost during the long night so the valyrians left after that basically had to rediscover it plus dragons are basically guaranteed to be created from wyverns and fire wyrms but the valyrians had dragons before colonizing sothoryos so someone went there and brought back some wyverns that we dont know about also now that i think of it do we hear anything about valyria and the long night maybe we havent because they didnt exist as their own people until after it okay i just did some research on this theory and im now 100% convinced its correct especially with euron probably representing the bloodstone emperor with his red eye

    I tend to like books that are written in that kind of like spontaneous way. as long as it doesn't come across as completely random. and I haven't read these but the show was obviously really random but that's not his fault
    But the like quintessential example of this is the Disney trilogy of Star wars was literally just random events. stuff that had no impact on the characters or the overall story. you could swap any of them and they wouldn't matter that you had changed them chronologically because the stuff that happens during them is basically irrelevant.
    Danny and slaver's Bay is kind of like that. it was my least favorite part since it it's bad, but in the sense that it's like you can tell that it's filler
