Early in the Covid-19 pandemic, many of the world’s richest countries poured money into the race for a vaccine. Billions of dollars, from programs like the US’s Operation Warp Speed, funded development that brought us multiple Covid-19 vaccines in record time. But it also determined where those vaccines would go. Before vaccine doses had even hit the market, places like the US and the UK had bought up nearly the entire supply.
This turns out to be an old story. In nearly every modern global health crisis, from smallpox to malaria to H1N1, rich countries have bought up vital medical supplies, making poor countries wait sometimes decades for life-saving support. It’s effectively a system in which where you live determines whether you live or die of a preventable disease. Leaving a disease like Covid-19 to spread unchecked in some places also gives it a chance to mutate -- and variants of the virus are already raising alarms. So: how do we get vaccines to countries that can’t afford them?
One solution underway is called Covax. It’s a program co-led by the World Health Organization; Gavi, The Vaccine Alliance; and the Coalition of Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI). Its goal is to get vaccines to lower- and middle-income countries at the same time as rich countries. So how is it supposed to do that? And will it be enough?

You kinda end on the real problem without much reporting on that problem. The intellectual property rights for these vaccines should be waived. @@rubyblu21 I have been hearing about it. It's a few cases among millions given. It's sad that it happened, but it's far better odds even than most over-the-counter medicines. The risk of leaving the fever untreated is far, far worse than taking the medication. Same thing with the vaccine. You have a ridiculously small chance of having a bad reaction (so small it's like winning the lottery, but your prize is something bad). However, if you catch the virus, you have a high likelihood of having long-term damage and are even risking death.

the absolute risk reduction for an individual is only about 0.4% (0.0043-0.0004=0.0039). The Number Needed To Vaccinate (NNTV) = 256 (1/0.0039), which means that to prevent just 1 Covid-19 case 256 individuals must get the vaccine; the other 255 individuals derive no benefit, but are subject to vaccine adverse effects, whatever they may be and whenever we learn about them……We’ve already heard that an early effect of the vaccine is “like a hangover or the flu.” Will vaccinees who are later exposed to coronaviruses have more severe illness as a result of antibody-dependent enhancement of infection (ADEI), a known hazard of coronavirus vaccines? Is there squalene in the Pfizer vaccine? If so, will vaccinees be subject to autoimmune diseases, like Gulf War Syndrome and narcolepsy that have been associated with the adjuvant?
We already know that current Covid-19 vaccine trials are unlikely to show a reduction in severe illness or deaths. (Doshi, BMJ 2020;371:m4037, October 21) Will they be like seasonal influenza vaccines, which have not proved to be lifesavers, and may even have increased overall mortality in the elderly? (Anderson et al, Ann Intern Med 2020;172:445) We need a lot more time and a lot more data, especially in view of massive uncertainties about Covid-19 case definitions and statistics.

yeah i dont understand the gripe here. governments have a responsibility to their own citizens before others.
I think the point they were trying to get across is that sometimes a more self-centred approach is worse in the medium to long term - for example not guaranteeing a global reduction of the infection rate (by having a more widespread distribution of vaccines) may lead to new variants which may worsen the situation. The wealthy countries invested a lot of money in the vaccine development, 1 to help speed up the process and 2 to get their economies return to normal and 3 to save lives. It only makes sense that these countries will vaccinate their own populations before other countries populations.
They were only able to invest so much originally *because* they're so wealthy (itself due to the long history of colonialism etc before). The argument you're making is not a moral argument, it's a "finders keepers" one. Help should be based on need. Secondly, precisely because they're so rich, wealthier countries would've been able to last longer with shut down economies as they have stronger currencies and better rates on the international debt markets. Developing countries often don't have that luxury, meaning they have less fiscal space to take action against coronavirus, not only worsening their ability to fight the pandemic, but also harming their fight against the myriad of basic problems that developing countries can face (e.g. other diseases). There are also far far more people in the developing world than in the rich countries, so for all those reasons it's very unlikely this saves the most lives.
@@Alex_Deam, mate, you lost me on your first sentence where you put those countries wealth purely down to colonialism.
@@Alex_Deam Also yes the goverment can go longer with shut down economies. But the people of those countries can't because living in a rich country also cost more most of the time then living in a poor country because of prices for services and products being higher due to higher average incomes and living standards.
Isn't this always the way? Rich / powerful get things first then it trickles down to the rest.
The rich countries funded the development of those vaccines, without them there wouldn't be a vaccine, obviously they'll get first pick.

@@tw-ij3kc yeah was about to say the same thing xD without the rich countries no one would have any vaccines at all xD
Try to find out why EU countries were missing from the video. We export about half of the vaccines made here. UK and USA banned exports of vaccines. Not all are equally guilty in this.
While it's unfortunate that the rich countries* - those who most likely are the least affected by the virus in the first place - gets the vaccine first, it's also the rich countries that funded the development of those vaccines. Without them these vaccines wouldn't exist, so from that perspective it's a necessary evil.
*To be more exact the US, the UK, Canada and a few others. Norway for example has very small amounts of doses, even though it's substantially richer than all of those on a per-capita basis
