The B-52's approach to stealth is to be as loud and noticable as possible to distract from stealthier bombers.
Russians used same strategy when creating the Tupolev Tu-95 airplane.
Which was shot down by vietnamese farners and is still in a pond in hanoi until today? Lol
And its approach to ECM is to burn our enemy radar.

Fun fact: the original airframes are still the planes being flown today.
You violated english
Hardly, the airframes have had so many parts replaced that its not really original anymore, not to mention the various models we've had. Even the tail got shorter
Most airframes dont get replaced. Only the Cockpit and the technology changes. Like T-38 which were made in the 50-60s are still flying
@@jasonpearson4485 they go through large overhaul inspections every few years where the plane is literally pulled apart and they replace what's broken and put it back together and repaint it

It's RLL2 im just as surprised
Back in the 90s, an expert said the last b52 pilot wasn't born yet. By now, he or she is presently age 10 years old or below.
It's quite possible that the last still hasn't been born. If we assume the best case scenario for the B-52, the plane may still fly until 2060, meaning that the pilots for the last 52s could easily not be born for another 15 years
@@alexv3357 you could be right, that's 40 years from now.
There are B-52 Pilots whose fathers AND grandfathers were B-52 pilots.
There are grandsons that are flying the same airplane (tail number) that their fathers and grandfathers have flown. Just the other day I got to fly a piper warrior that is the same one I flew from Florida where Piper made them in Vero Beach. Just 44 years later. Airplanes are consistently being rebuilt. It's not uncommon to take an airplane strip it down and rebuild, you end up will pretty much a new aircraft for a fraction of what a new airframe would cost. There is a real cottage industry that does this. Beech King Airs from the 1970s and 1980's get the makeover and for half of what a new one cost you get pretty much a new and updated airplane. The B-52's have served our country well and will continue to do so at least for my lifetime, I will be 66 soon. It was a fairly new airplane in 1955 when I was born.
The B52 Stratofortress is a prime example of designers getting a concept so right that nothing anyone has come up since fulfills the same roll as well. There are faster, and stealthy bombers but the B52 still does it's job better.
But that role is limited. The B-52 will not make it into defended airspace.
@@Inspadave It doesn't need to get there to do its job, it can do other jobs as well, that's its primary pro
@@Inspadave it can carry missiles that outrange aa systems and can carry more of them compared to other bombers. It doesn't hve to get in range. There are many other platforms to do it.
Didn't know it was called the stratofortress, supercool name, thanks for the info. I've been a fan of this bomber for decades.
thats blatantly false, its just not worth spending the money to actually build a new plane. its roll is antiquated, almost obsolete. just a bomb truck for uncontested skies that has been used far less than anticipated thus airframe life is lasting.
We designed the new B-52G in 1956 foe high altitude bombing. In 1961, at the hright of the Cold War, we redesigned the B-52G/H primary structure to meet SAC's new usage and service life requirments. These notably included low level terrain avoidance training, often under extreme gust and maneuver conditions. We did extensive flight testing and lab testing and data gathering. and fatigue analysis. The main reason for the structural longevity is that the usage has not been as severe as was projected. As Chief of Structures Technology at Boeing-Wichita at the time of the redesign. I am now 95, and am honored to say I chose the materials, the analysis methods, and the limiting stress levels for the redesicn. I am thrilled to see these planes still flying, and projected to do so for many more years.
Great job. As a structural engineer, I envy your accomplishments. What memories to have knowing your designs are still flying.
I worked on your plane. Awesome airframe. B52g jet engine mech P & W j-57. Loring AFB ME. 88-92
We deployed to Diego Garcia ; Desert Shield/Storm. Used to watch the BUFF coming in from the deck of the Tiki Lounge at sunset. Sometimes we could read the tail numbers.
Amazing that the engine is hung with one primary bolt and nut and then a bracket towards the back attached to the fire wall. The rest is the component attachments etc.
Wasn't easy to do that in a monsoon storm at midnight under the floodlights ; wind and rain howling, but we did.
So I am one of many with memories of that bird and she still flies ...amazing!! Nice work, sir.
I also worked on one of your airplanes, in the late 1970's at a SAC base in Michigan. One of the planes I worked on is shown in this video at time 6:15 ... "Balls Five" is now in Minot, ND.

In SAC back in the day it was said of the BUFF that it had the power of 100 railroad engines, contained 50 miles of cables and wire, and the same amount of metal as 12,000 garbage cans. And that's the way it flew - like 100 railroad engines dragging 12,000 garbage cans attached by 50 miles of wire.
A B-52 pilot once said that “the last B-52 pilot hasn’t even been born yet.”
I think it's important to note the difference difference in production volume has a huge impact upon price. The engineering effort for these aircraft is tremendous. That cost is reflected in the final per unit price.

I live just down the road from an air museum and they have four fully restored B-52's parked out front along the road. I never get tired of looking at them. I was on the Udorn Thani Royal Thai airforce base back during the Vietnam war. The 52's would take off in large configurations to bomb the Ho Chi Minh trail.

The next plane that will replace the B-52 is going to have to be a pretty insane platform, I'd like to see something like the B-52, but supersonic, with more range, with higher capacity, relatively low acquisition cost, and with low operating cost, with modern avionics and all of course. I think it could very well be possible and would likely be very useful (especially since the supersonic B-1B has an even lower operating cost than the B-52), but I guess we'll see what the USAF does.
It's legendary because it slaps, as the kids say.

@@mrunseen3797 with all the technological advancements in precision weaponry accidental elimination of civilians is statistically impropable. if a general decides to hide his troops behind civilians on purpose, he is the one to be condemned. likewise, if a general chooses to erradicate civilians for no reason, he is the one to be prosecuted. the gun does not destroy civilians, the man holding it does. this plane is nothing but a tool, that can terminate terrorists in the right hands, or innocent civilians in the wrong ones.

While research and engineering was going on in 1950, the actual B-52H models currently in service were manufactured 1960-1962, putting their age at 58-60 years
Are they the original things from back then or a bit modernized?
My BIL was in the Air Force in the early 60's and stationed at Austin, TX. One Sunday he took me to a lightly manned base and we went all over a B52, inside and outside. I walked along the fusilage clear back to the tall tail, then we went inside......I even sat in the pilot's seat and is a memory I still carry to this day almost 60 years later.

Despite its countermeasures, 17 B-52's were combat losses in Vietnam. A friend of mine was a B-52 navigator during Vietnam. He said they were shot at every single combat mission. I lived at Andersen AFB on Guam toward the end of Vietnam. Quite a few B-52's landed with bullet holes and combat damage. The airframe shop worked 24/7 repairing combat damage. It's a miracle there weren't more shot down. The current B-52 mission capable rate is an abysmal 65.7%. It's old and its mechanical systems are old. It's ridiculous to compare acquisition costs between the B-1 and B-52. It's apples to oranges in capabilities. There will never be a day you can fly a B-52 into denied airspace without a ton of escort aircraft. It's best use is as a conventional bomber when there is air superiority and minimal to no ground threats.
