@@Jon-Rimmer I see your point and it makes sense why do you consider morally grey characters 'subversive', but (in this particular example) I don't see it as the author wanting to be subversive (with some exceptions like the edgy batmans) but wanting to write complexity when they don't have the skill to do it yet

@@-._lunamidnight_.- Complex characters don’t need to be Morally Grey, just have flaws and make mistakes. That’s every single well written Protagonist, but people can be very much blind to depth, and the only way they can see it is if it’s right up in their face. Superman is complex, but every body calls him boring because he is a good person and isn’t willing to do something terrible. Game of Thrones started this trend for me.

@@Jon-Rimmer Well, I'd say that a complex character has to have more than flaws and mistakes. But my main problem with the morally grey characters is the writer not committing to the 'morally grey' bit. It starts with "this character did some morally questionable actions" and goes to "this character is actually the good guy and did nothing wrong" and the narrative bends over backwards to justify their actions.
I had thought you were talking about morally grey characters in general, but it seems to me that you're talking about characters that were already known as morally good (like superman) and were given a twist, subverted. But again, I don't think you'll find many people disagreeing with your take. And the people who like edgy characters aren't there for the subversion, just the edginess.
