I spotted a book from Claude Levi-Strauss on your library. I wonder when you are making a video on African Religions. Voodoo, Candomble, Umbanda, Santeria... all those ramifications live despite the Neo-Pentecostalism trying to shut them down.
2:17 The fact that he quotes from Isaiah 14:14 is a little odd, especially considering the entire context of Isaiah 14, where it's quoting the King of Babylon, and right after it describes the king falling from heaven.
Once again, I highly recommend reading "The Books of Jacob", a fictionalised biography of Jacob Frank and a great perspective on the community he established and it's socioeconomic conditions that contributed to expansion of messianistic ideas in Poland. It's written by Olga Tokarczuk, a Nobel Prize laureate, and will be soon released in English translation.
I love all your content, I'm just obsessed with this stuff, but what I perhaps like most is that I learn how to actually pronounce these words and names properly. After I watch your videos I practice how to say things properly. I would have never known how to say Sabbatai's name how it is supposed to be said. Thank you so much.
TBH for all that I love AMH, don't learn to pronounce things from him. The quality of his pronunciations varies greatly. Instead, you should learn to read the international phonetic alphabet. You should be able to find accurate IPA transcriptions for names of major figures, and for lesser know figures as long as you know what language the name is from you can figure it out pretty easily.
Overall, this an an excellent video. My one serious criticism of this video is not mentioning the 1648-1649 massacre of Jews in Ukraine during Bogdan Chmielnitsky's revolt. It was the single largest slaughter of Jews since ancient times, and it creates an intense despair in much of Eastern European Jewry that Sabbateanism provided an answer for.

Okay I need help on a couple points: 1) - I thought 'Sabbatean' was a term derived from 'sabbath' - used to describe those Christian movements that observe a 7th day sabbath rather than Sunday (for instance, 7th Day Adventists, 'Messianic Christians' and similar). Does Sevy have anything to do with this? Are the two words only incidentally similar; or did I make this idea up all together? 2) - I wonder if Sevy's effect on Judaism had anything to do with the (I suppose more modern) Jewish conception that the 'Messiah' is an era, a state of mind, or even a symbol of Jewish prosperity, rather than an actual figure -- whether it is or isn't, I would love to see a video on 'Messiah = symbol, not person.' and 3) - you said early in the video, that recent scholarship has made connections showing how Sabbateanism influenced Christianity and Islam afterword, but I didn't hear much on this... What influences? Thanks,
Sabbatai is the name of Saturn in Hebrew, and the Sabbath is Satur(n)-day. Zvi's name is probably self-adopted. So both refer to the Sabbath in some way. According to Wikipedia, the Christian movements are called Sabbatarianism; in other languages (like mine), the names are identical. Still, two very different movements.
@@varana The sabbath [noun] day is not named after the Greek god of Saturn. Sabbath [H7676] comes from the Hebrew primitive root verb, Shabath, meaning to rest. And God blessed 👉the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested [H7673] from all his work which God created and made. {Genesis 2:3}
@@larrybedouin2921 That's not what I meant - rather, the other way around: the Hebrew name for the planet Saturn (שבתאי) comes from the day it was associated with.
@@varana The only day of the week with a name in Hebrew was the sabbath day, and Saturn was never associated with the sabbath day, until the other days of the week where named by other ethnicities.
Have you done a show about the Jews of Greece? In particular, I would like to learn more about the Romaniote community in the 17-19th centuries. Thanks
It’s not the same thing. He never claimed he was the Messiah and very few people today actually believe he is. The Chabad sect is mostly just people following his teachings, not believing he was the messiah.
i think its very interesting, some kept many of their catholic beliefs and eventually re-joined the church when it was re-established in japan, whilst others saw it in almost the way people see Shinto, an important part of their families culture but not a deeply held belief
Ok so this is 100% irrelevant, but I was wondering why a united kingdom of Solomon is so impossible in the archeological record. Couldn't it have been united and still be nomadic similar to how the mongol tribes united? It was a thought I had recently, and was wondering what evidence could debunk it.
I am always suspect of any "self-proclaimed" whatever (messiah, prophet, guru). Any such spiritual teacher worth anything should not have to "proclaim" him (or her) self to be whatever they are. "By their works ye shall know them." A true spiritual teacher would be humble, not self-promoting.
@@josepabloceniceros3483 more a matter of the claim that he was "king of the Jews". The Romans did like like that because the only king they recognized was the Roman Emperor.
@@lshulman58 umm...no...he was charged with heresy, they mockingly called him king of the jews, but the alleged reason he was killed was heresy, the romans didn’t particularly care, it was a more domestic judean problem. There were also a lot of kings “like herod” who answered to the Caesar, so him being a “king” wasn’t the problem
One highly significant factor in the phenomenal spread of Sabbateanism you neglected to consider and include was the Khmelnytsky Uprising between 1648 and 1657 in the eastern portions of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in which tens of thousands of Jews were killed by rebellious Cossack forces. Terror and despair, widespread among the Jews of Eastern Europe, made them susceptible to quirky theology of Shabbetai Zvi.
David Alroy was another popular Messiah claimant who was murdered for being a “threat” to Islam. His movement similarly persisted, regardless, for a century or so afterwards. If Zevi had followed Alroy to the grave, not much would have changed except for the mass disheartening of the Jewish faithful.
@15:55 I just read the very first paragraph of the Dutch newspaper article and thought Zevi's description was quite amusing. "He is not a pretty man, but crude in aspect, the hair a bit curled, large and chubby physique, having an uptilted moustache and a little beard.' I think people were anticipating a handsome Messiah.

More than the original ideas, it would be very interesting to watch how they developed and are still alive in the Americas. Voodoo, Candomble, Umbanda, Santeria... all those ramifications live despite the Neo-Pentecostalism trying to shut them down.
Yes indeed!
I’d love if you did an episode on the Druze!
2:17
The fact that he quotes from Isaiah 14:14 is a little odd, especially considering the entire context of Isaiah 14, where it's quoting the King of Babylon, and right after it describes the king falling from heaven.
Yes its the descent into the qlipoth
Quite terrifying really
Once again, I highly recommend reading "The Books of Jacob", a fictionalised biography of Jacob Frank and a great perspective on the community he established and it's socioeconomic conditions that contributed to expansion of messianistic ideas in Poland. It's written by Olga Tokarczuk, a Nobel Prize laureate, and will be soon released in English translation.
Sounds good!
Amazing video!
Have you ever made any content discussing Hermeticism? Would love to learn about it in a historical/academic context!
Candace owens brought me here😂😂❤❤❤
Same, just read the Wikipedia page
@@TheBakerStudiosJust delved into Reddit and it’s even deeper and the web is crazier than Candace could imagine
Same here 🙋♀️
Same. But I need more information on this 😅
Me too. 😅
I wish people said it is hard to make psychological diagnoses from historical documents more often
Would have liked to see more on the antinomian practices of Zvi and Frank and the metaphysics underlying them.
I got just the thing for you buddy
@@roflswamp6ok, where?
It wasn't just Jews though Ukrainian Catholics and Protestant poles was also on the chopping block.
It's been too long, can't wait for another amazing video!💗👌🔥🔥🔥
imagine being a simple jew in a ghetto in poland and you hear that the Messiah has come , all the jews in the world say this is the real Messiah , finally we will be liberated and we will rule the world , and after this mass hysteria , the Messiah converts to Islam 😵😵😵😵😵😵😵😵😵
I've been waiting for this 🙌🙌🙌
Same product new packaging. It never just ends.
I was literally researching this man a few weeks ago!
2:38 Nathan of Ashkenazi. Interesting last name.
Nearly 18 minutes about Sabbateanism without mentioning the central doctrine of "sacred sin"?
Facts
It's just Gatekeeping, also more than half the world's jews at the time followed him
What an excellent channel this is!👍
"He's not the messiah, he 's a very bipolar boy!'
Whoa, watching this and, by pure chance, knitting "Smyrna Lace"
Okay I need help on a couple points:
1) - I thought 'Sabbatean' was a term derived from 'sabbath' - used to describe those Christian movements that observe a 7th day sabbath rather than Sunday (for instance, 7th Day Adventists, 'Messianic Christians' and similar). Does Sevy have anything to do with this? Are the two words only incidentally similar; or did I make this idea up all together?
2) - I wonder if Sevy's effect on Judaism had anything to do with the (I suppose more modern) Jewish conception that the 'Messiah' is an era, a state of mind, or even a symbol of Jewish prosperity, rather than an actual figure -- whether it is or isn't, I would love to see a video on 'Messiah = symbol, not person.'
and 3) - you said early in the video, that recent scholarship has made connections showing how Sabbateanism influenced Christianity and Islam afterword, but I didn't hear much on this...
@@varana Sabbatarian -- okay, thanks so much, this is exactly what I needed; glad to see there was at least some linguistic connection.
@@varana
The sabbath [noun] day is not named after the Greek god of Saturn.
Sabbath [H7676] comes from the Hebrew primitive root verb, Shabath, meaning to rest.
And God blessed 👉the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested [H7673] from all his work which God created and made.
{Genesis 2:3}
@@larrybedouin2921 That's not what I meant - rather, the other way around: the Hebrew name for the planet Saturn (שבתאי) comes from the day it was associated with.
@@varana
The only day of the week with a name in Hebrew was the sabbath day, and Saturn was never associated with the sabbath day, until the other days of the week where named by other ethnicities.
I love your beard it looks so good
Ah man, looking forward to this
Have you done a show about the Jews of Greece? In particular, I would like to learn more about the Romaniote community in the 17-19th centuries. Thanks
The sheer number of rival religions, all true, arising among humans
is breathtaking.
I know this has nothing to do with this but: Happy Ascension day everyone! 🙂
Great Channel. Thank you very much for sharing.
Is this the rick & morty holiday?
@@MichaelSBaram It's something European, you won't understand.
There are still followers of Shabtai Zvi in Turkey.
For a moment, I thought the video was about Sebastianism, the Portuguese messianic movement haha
I enjoy your work.
Slightly surprising ,based on that labor analogy, that some messiah didn't proclaim themself after the Holocaust
When I was 9 there was this guy that walked by our neighborhood proclaiming he also was the Messiah. Long time I don't see him
Fascinating as always!
Christ is King!
Amen
This reminds me you should do a video on Menachem Mendel Schneerson
It’s not the same thing. He never claimed he was the Messiah and very few people today actually believe he is. The Chabad sect is mostly just people following his teachings, not believing he was the messiah.
When Chasidism first appeared many Jewish authorities suspected it of being a recrudescence of Sabbateanism.
We've still got an eye out...
Awesome as always! What you think of a video talking about Kakure Kirishitan and Christian syncretism in Asia?
i think its very interesting, some kept many of their catholic beliefs and eventually re-joined the church when it was re-established in japan, whilst others saw it in almost the way people see Shinto, an important part of their families culture but not a deeply held belief
Ok so this is 100% irrelevant, but I was wondering why a united kingdom of Solomon is so impossible in the archeological record. Couldn't it have been united and still be nomadic similar to how the mongol tribes united? It was a thought I had recently, and was wondering what evidence could debunk it.
Learned about this from CM Kosëman. His research on the subject was astounding.
How can you talk about the dude and not mention he MARRIED A BOOK??
WHAT?!?!?!?
@@sandranorman5469 yup, married a bible..had a ceremony and all..
Um, what you just said is self-proclaimed, don't you think?
@@johnedwardtaylor I did not proclaim anything about who/what I think I am. Just stating my own beliefs.
Wasn’t jesus wacked because he proclaimed himself to be god?
I wonder what would've happened if Sabbatai Zevi had chosen death over conversion.
Another Christ?
@@paxanimi3896 Yeah Beheaded
David Alroy was another popular Messiah claimant who was murdered for being a “threat” to Islam. His movement similarly persisted, regardless, for a century or so afterwards. If Zevi had followed Alroy to the grave, not much would have changed except for the mass disheartening of the Jewish faithful.
10:55 on for those of you looking for the most hench Adam and Eve in art history.
The group that thought he was on a secret mission when he converted...
...early Q-anon! 🤷🏻♂️
Just kidding! 😂
Great video
the same thing went through my head.
You’re not really kidding though. Same thinking at work.
Same people behind it. *duh*
I'd like to know Sabbetai Tzvi's pronunciation of the Tetragrammaton.
Can you pls do a video on the Historicity of the Tetragrammaton
You should do a video about the last two severan emperors, elagabalus and alexander severus
Interesting how you mention that the lurianic kabbalah views the adam and eve original sin to play such a role. I didn't know the original sin concept exists out side of Christianity
The twist that he converted to Islam is just amazing. Hahaha
plsss can you make a video about the origins of the Sacraments of the Catholic Church??
They are present since 33 AD. Not only the bible but all writings of the Early Christians show them. You can read the writings of the Early Church Fathers if you are interested.
Yea? Some of us had them crammed down our throats
We'll be seeing view counts here steadily rise shortly... More and more will arrive down deep this rabbit hole. Thanks for your research.
Never heard of this.
Fantastic 👍
Can you do a video on samaritans? I've vaguely gathered some stuff from wikipedia but it would cool to see your thoughts on how they were distinct from jews and how the groups related to eachother
He just did.

It's all fun and games until that one nerd in your temple declares himself god.
People who think they are God or the Messiah are a dime a dozen. The ones who convince thousands of other people they are God are the interesting cases.
Isaiah 14 is what Haylel/Lucifer/Satan said when he rebelled against Elohiym God.
I know the Documentary Hypothesis is very popular in explaining the origins of the Torah but could you do a video on the Dual Theory Hypothesis
