Amazing path finding ability of the Skydio 2 in a forest

- I'm driving on a motorcross terrain that's abandoned because of the coronavirus. The Skydio 2 takes amazing shots but at one point loses me and has to find me back through a maze of trees and branches and succeeds! Wow.

the programming is incredible. it is so impressive that the drone can make decisions on where to route in 3 dimensional space, all while avoiding collisions and tracking a target... simply amazing. i'm looking forward to seeing how they expand this technology into cooperative flying with other drones in groups, especially during sporting events. will provide some impressive coverage. i would like to see the next generation of these flying camera platforms to have 360 degree rotating cameras that are independent of the direction of flight for the drone, there is no reason that the camera needs to face 'forward' on the drone. this would allow for faster flight speeds and 'i think' better camera tracking.
Great tip for the developers to create a "Peter-Pathfinder" Mode
pro trick : you can watch series on Flixzone. Been using it for watching loads of movies recently.

What you explained at the end with the path that the drone should fly sidewards etc. makes *100%* sense... hopefully Skydio looks at your explanations and shots as well !!!!! Let's just hope they will update their software and make their drone the best on the market 🤣 (and also a bit cheaper... 🤔) and most of all fully available in EUROPE
It seems like they could experiment with maybe what they could call 'Woods Mode', where the algorithm is scripted to totally avoid clusters of irregular shaped objects. That, along with what you mention seems like it would render this quad unstoppable during follow. Either way, it is always impressive to see just how hellbent this little quad is when it comes to accomplishing its singular goal of following that beacon. Another good one Peter!

Hi! I have watched your videos since the phantom 4 days. You really convinced me to buy that drone and I have made videos for fun with it on my channel. I remember the one time that you landed your phantom on the sand island as it didin't have enough battery left to come back home. I just wanted to say that I really enjoy these videos and that Skydio really is a incredible drone. I would still stick to DJI drones but for automatically filming motorsports that thing is nothing short of amazing!
Its crazy but I find myself bobbing and weaving with the drone as it negotiates its path through the trees.

And you are correct, it shouldn’t always try to find the shortest route to you. But it makes for amazing footage when it actually goes through the forest where people fear to trek!

Well done Peter, you got nerves of steel to let it find its way in those pine trees! Beacon on top of the helmet would perform way better 4 magnets and you are done :) 21:30 I agree, but that's only possible when rear tracking
Seems like the GPS follow and recapture visual lock has improved with the latest updates. I also wonder, did you remove the 8 ft hight limit? It should follow you better if it could go under some of the lower branches. Great video as always man!

Impressive how the Skydio masters the most complicated situations between the trees and then, just before it has caught you, gets stuck in an insurmountable undergrowth. The viewer may see a gap, but Sydio does not.
As you have already explained, it would make sense for it to follow your route and not try to take shortcuts. Maybe this selection will come in a later firmware version.

Totally agree with you. I have seen others videos showing the Skydio 2 getting stuck in the trees after trying to catch the subject where they are instead of where they have been. It likes to cut the corner because like you said, it tries to get to where you ARE rather than following where you have been.
In any case, I love how it finds its path through the trees. And this video of yours really showed some great potential for the Skydio 2 as I loved it when it decided to launch up high above the trees and then once it locked on again it dropped below and flew through the trees....
I still don't like how it nearly overtakes you when trying to catch up and then has to look straight down at you. Not very cinematic.

The drone is definitely not following the route the beacon traveled ....instead it is taking shortcuts on every corner ..they need to have the option to follow the beacons route , avoid all the bush shortcuts ..I ride quads bikes and want this drone ..but itdd be nice to get skydio to upgrade firmware with better route following. ..less shortcuts
Also, the video of it in the woods makes me nervous from here!
Mooie video Peter, Voor ons als Drone liefhebbers machtig mooie video, maar als je thuis wil laten zien hoe goed je kunt rijden op je quad op deze crossbaan , is de skydio 2 totaal onbruikbaar. Na 5 minuten haakt iedereen af die niet van drones houd. 😁😁😁 de skydio volgt goed op redelijk open terrein.
Very impressive ! Give the guys a bit of time to optimize that autonomous wayfinding, it will stick rigth on your back in 2 more years !

Als het uw route volgt zal je dikwijls uit beeld zijn door de afstand tussen u en de drone. De bochten zijn tekort om langs achter te volgen en in beeld te houden.

But I've found it's crash city if you're having it "follow" ahead of you in this kind of congestion while making a turn. Can you figure out why? A lite amount of physic's quiz for you, Lol.
This is why dji need competitor so they're not only thinking to improve camera but also other thing that drone should hv.

As I see it, you fly the drone into trees where it says it will crash. It does not crash but can't find a safe path to you and you complain the drone won't follow you where you are not supposed to lead it. You could always fly it away from the trees where it is not in danger of crashing.

Without the beacon this drone is hopeless. I’m more interested and just watching this thing meander through the woods. I mean the four wheeler is cool and I like you as a creator but the drone is interesting when lost in the woods.

Even though the drone was amazing at finding u...u wasted more time messing with it than riding...video after video of people showing themselves stopping what they are doing to wait or look for the drone...$1200 for a follow me drone that can’t live up to its own hype...would never waste the money until they’ve worked out the kinks...it can’t even do the only thing it’s really made to do 🤷♂️
