The technique is called " Float and fly". When the fish are extra finicky add a tiny fly ( any version) on a short leader(6-10") tied to the hook of the first fly. This is especially deadly when the first fly is a popper. Fish that only come up and look at the first fly will hit the second.

    • @SonOfTheMustardTiger1
      @SonOfTheMustardTiger1 6 місяців тому

What knot do you use to tie the leader to the fly hook? I’m going to try this next time I go fishing but not sure if the fisherman’s knot is the appropriate knot to use in that situation.

Chasers or stingers in other waters. Very effective. Occasionally hangs up on itself on the cast or splash, but otherwise one of those things we ought to be doing more often, especially if you are searching for fish.

I use a regular spin reel setup with 6 lb line an no leader.
I cast it just like the fly fisherman do, you gotta have bout 10 foot or so of line hanging off, then wave it out into the water, once your fly is on the water, open ur reel an let a few feet more line out an flip the bale back down.
Then you’re gonna yank the rod back an forth with fly in the air just like the fly fisherman do, an get the fly to land even further out into the water, then open ur bale an let more line out and do it again in same manner til you have fly where you want it.
This video is cheating an that bobber is noticeable by the fish.
I usually get a hit literally every cast using my approach.
An as I’m typing this I got an actual fly fishing reel setup in the mail.
    Fish on!

Not a fan of casting bubbles, if you're not able to cast way beyond the strike zone the odds of spooking fish are too great. Not stealthy. My favorite thing to do is remove the rear treble hook from a jerk bait and add a dropper, using different sizes and buoyancy depending on the size of the fly and where in the water column you want it like floating, sub surface and weighted. You sacrifice casting distance but worth it

I have always called this "bubble fly fishing." When you are doing this, you want to have a line that is very flexible. Something that will straighten out with only the weight of the fly on it. This will prevent the line from causing any ripple in the water. You also want to retrieve the line slow where there isn't a ribble caused by the bubble.

This setup smokes trout. Lakes I use the large 5'-6' mono leaders and streams/beaver ponds where you don't have as much depth I'll try and set my leaders a little off the bottom. 4-6lb test (diameter match with braid if I'm casting from the bank) and usually some black or brown flies are a go to.

And then to cast far I put some spilt shot. Just 1 and I can cast 20 feet about.

I'm going try this tomorrow if good ol' garlic scented powerbait doesn't work. Last week caught 9 18-20" rainbows on chartreuse color

@@norincofan1949 I didn't know catching a 24" rainbow trout from a lake shore on powerbait wasn't actual fishing. I also caught a 22" that day. Fishing from a boat launch that has no dock about a week and a half ago.
How do you recommend I be fishing so I'm actually doing it? Bobber and sinking fly with a fly rod and just be a glorified bobber fisherman? Oh yea, another thing fly fishermen do, pull up to start fishing at 9-10am instead of 5-6am?

@@norincofan1949 If the rod ain't bending you're just pretending. I use a tape that has cm and in, so yes your right, it does measure in cm too.
You never did tell me how I should be fishing instead so I can start doing it for real. Not fishing takes 0 skill too bud.
Edit : My favorite rod for rainbow trout is a bright yellow Eagle Claw Light action I picked up at Walmart for $20, with a reel I picked up at a garage sale for $25 (Pflueger President), it doesn't matter the gear you use, as long as the lines are tight.

@@heruhcanedean you can also fish with trotlines or explosives. what matters is skill and finesse. baitfishing and spinfishing take very little of that. like i said, leave that shit to the kids and learn to fly fish.

Has anyone hooked a 40+ lb fish on one of those folding kayaks? Serious question, not throwing shade. I need something I can carry deep into the woods by myself but I’m worried a massive catfish would drag that thing around like nothing 😂

A big sporting goods store should have a fly fishing section, they should have some premade flys for sale around there, got my first flys today at bass pros and I’m thinking of fishing it just like this, and in the float section there should be those clear floats, but any float should do just fine if you’re gonna have that much line away from the fly
