Wow, for Worf, a Klingon whose people pride themselves on, well.. pride, this was a huge thing for him to do, admitting the improperness in his recent behavior and apologizing for jeopardizing both the efficiency of the mission and his friendship with Data. Klingons are big, prideful men, but it takes a far bigger man to humble himself, admit he was wrong and apologize. Perhaps he surpassed his own people that day. What I LOVE about this scene is that @ 2:07, Data's lack of emotional context/understanding allows him to believe that his friendship with Worf would be over. Despite his expert handling of the situation up until that moment, he is still Data.
One of my favorite scenes and episodes. Well handled by both Data and Worf. It's not easy being the boss, especially when you were part of the team before. But Data did what he had to do, and Worf realized his mistake and owned up to it. Then it's all good - and they move forward.
I've always loved this scene. An android and an alien have to navigate their professional conflicts while protecting their personal relationship, all within the limitations of humanocentric Starfleet protocols and the English language. The words themselves are blunt, awkward and unsubtle, but their delivery is authentic and heartfelt, even in Data's peculiar way. So many levels of craft here.
If you've ever worked w/ friends and been promoted over them it sucks... Data weighs efficiency of the crew vs friendship & makes a hard but correct choice... without a hint of remorse that Data could lose a friend, and Worf's acknowledgment of his mistake the scene would not engage us... as it stands the scene is a brilliant example of how Gentlemen should settle their shit!
So true. In fact, this scene really seems like it was written for every person... not just military people. It shows how to maturely settle a problem civilly without violence or other nonsense.
This conflict resolution scene handled with such maturity and grace really is what makes this show great. Modern movie characters would just be screaming against each other.

It truly is a tragedy we will now never get to see Captain Data. This one performance illustrated such depth and potential in roughly 2 minutes that would have made for an absolutely phenomenal captain.
What's interesting is how data handles the situation, it's not just that data handled it, but he even set himself to emulate the mannerisms of the best figure of authority he knew, Picard. It shows not only in how he stands, how he moves nad how he gets right to hte point, all things you might assume are data, but it also is in the little shirt tug at the end, that's what tips you off that the entirety of how he handled his job as 'captain' was to best utilize what he learned from picard to the point of full mimicery.
I think that was due to Data knowing how Worf reacts to Picard. Emulating Picard's mannerisms as he addresses Worf and Worf owing up to it, realizing his problem was nobody's fault but his own. This was brilliant acting on both sides, it's really difficult to find a character who wasn't well acted in TNG.
This is how real Jeanette an argument. It also showed Worf's growth and development. Long before, he might have resorted to yelling or some kind of violence and harbor resentment, but he took it like a man, accepted responsibility for his mistake, and vowed to mend his way.
Scenes like this just have that certain something, that inspiring nature, positive example of character. I don't know what else to say, just that it's an awesome scene.
It's scenes like this that are quintessentially Star Trek, unlike ST: Discovery and ST: Picard which are travesties of modern television and an insult to everything Gene Roddenberry stood for. Completely full of mindless violence, constant crying from the woe-is-me leads who feel hard done by, and endless examples where the writers haven't read up on ST lore or just don't care because they want to seem trendy to the latest audiences.
Carly Smith Ohh you are sooo sweet, you invested thought about me as a candidate. You made considiration as me being your captain when I didn't even apply for the job. such a sweet gesture.
Data just gave a textbook example of one of the best principles of leadership (one of the things they taught us in the military): Praise in public, punish in private.
That's really hard on a Klingon whose main role is to always challenge authority and an android whose role is to always follow programming is most high unusual.
I love moments like this. If there were more who took responsibility & strived to be the best they could no matter what maybe the world wouldn't be so effed up irl. That said I'm not naive enough to think it's that simple.
Thanks for posting this! Ive been looking for this scene for a while now. I love that Data dressed down Worf and put him straight. I think thats pretty cool and shows data has the ability to lead, command and be respected as captain.
It shows how two mature adults resolve a conflict-type situation without yelling, name calling or fighting. This is a model example of how more people in the world should act. I totally agree with your comment.
+BirchBehav the danger with Data in command is the possibility of him being taken over by an alien lifeform and then shutting down the entire Federation. But other than that, yeah I'd love to at least see him command a cruiser as captain.
LKVideos He is no more of a risk than a biological being. plus the same medical, or in this case digital "checks and balances" will remain. haha even if Data is compromised, it is not going to take down the whole federation. the cruiser is a good one. maybe set it on a social station or diplomatic ship so he can learn more human interactions :)
BirchBehav It simply ain't the same. Yes biological lifeforms can be easily taken over and manipulated but they can't do much harm unless they are someone really important and can provide access to crucial information and assets of the Federation. But even than it's just limited. They are also weaker and lack the same capabilities whereas Data on the other hand is literaly a walking massive database who had repeatedly linked himself with the main computer of a star cruiser, other than a human, perfectly memorizes *everything* that may be of *any kind* of relevance and importance to the invader.. Diplomatic vessel ? Well I'd say if anything his capabilities should be exploited in ways that make sense. For Data's own good and for his development's sake yes I'd agree with you. But as a captain, I'd use him more efficiently, coordinate. He has allready proven himself to be a very capable starfleet captain.
ThePanicPuppet yes, but they had to infiltrate the entire Star Fleet Command to achieve some of their goals. Data however is a single entity with vast amount of information. Be it Starfleet, on history and culture of humans, other races etc.
Grate way to show the structure of the crew and the bit after about a friend ship is perfect it like there both the bigger man but same time both the more humble one in recognising each others predicament. Even data who is in command has to take actions he would not logical do so it pays to have worf. As his second in command it his tactical expertise plus data long term and quick logic which I feel makes them a grate pair.
If this was NuTrek, they would've been yelling and crying at each other with no differences resolved and be bitter towards each other for the rest of the series.
Data sure knows how to tell you when you done goofed and help you understand that. Worf especially knows when to take responsibility in this case. Props to both of them.
He does such a great job of what could’ve been a very boring role and making it one of the best yet still confirming to the restrictions of that that character.
haha Data is a pretty good study of Picard. not only does he work in a "make it so", he does the "other Picard Maneuver " at the end of the clip -- that little tug on his shirt is something Picard always does right after he stands up.
Worf was out of line, but he's not yet a command officer. He's temporarilly filling in for a role that is "above his pay grade" in experience. Junior officers frequently make mistakes of this kind. He just needs more time to grow in to his role.
You have to understand that their post(function) and their rank are different things when you're a senior officer. La Forge is the Chief engineer, so Worf can't order him to shutdown the Warp Core unless he is in temporary command of the Ship. Same to LA Forge ordering something related to security and the tactical system to Worf. The Chain of command in the Enterprise D was: Picard > Riker > Data > Worf > Crusher(The mother) > Troi > La Forge > etc...
This scene was almost a little bit creepy. It made me realize that data is not truly "alive". Brent Spiner does a terrific job of portraying an Android with no soul. Data's face barely even moves just his mouth and he doesn't blink.
I took your advice and read my bible (really though, I read my bible, and five other versions), and found this, "Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written." Clearly, according to the bible, there's more to the God's revelation than is written in the bible.
There are many ocasions in TNG stating that ranks have graduation, even in command posts. Worf is Chief Commander of Security and Tactical, but he only become Senior graduated in DS9. Seems that Captains have the liberty to control the chain of command in their Ships despite the ranks, of course taking care of who will be chosen. In this episode and like many others, La Forge was kept out of command because of his skills in engeneering been necessary.
Instead of yelling at each other it was Data who Set the Tone with a calm voice right at the start. From there, neither raised their voice in frustration. Is that truly possible?
Imagine we got a follow up scene where Worf shows his own budding leadership abilities and tells LaForge and the bridge officers he was wrong, reaffirming Data's command.
Worf is a real man. He accepted responsibility for his actions and did not try to blame the whole world for his mistakes.
Jason yes Klingon tradition is to challenge authority when it is unsure that one can lead. He was so proud of data 😪

Carly Smith Ohh you are sooo sweet, you invested thought about me as a candidate. You made considiration as me being your captain when I didn't even apply for the job.
such a sweet gesture.
It is scenes like this that make me love Star Trek so much... NO LENS FLAIR UNIVERSE!!!
Love the way TNG demonstrates management techniques.
data nearly made me shit my pants, that cold android stare.
Angry Data is kinda low key
"Authoritative" tho!
Data just gave a textbook example of one of the best principles of leadership (one of the things they taught us in the military):
Praise in public, punish in private.
Word is such a class act. It was gratifying to see his character done proper justice in DS9.
Data gonna cry when worf leave. Emotion chips are in 😢
“My Klingon grew up so well...”
this is to real for anyone who's had to live and work in the same place.
I totally agree with your comment.
i love how he finished with the Picard Maneuver after Worf walked out lol
Just love the ambient ship noise in this clip.
I want to see a star trek where data is a captain or at least second in command
+LKVideos didn't that already happen at Starfleet, though, with the humans in control?
ThePanicPuppet yes, but they had to infiltrate the entire Star Fleet Command to achieve some of their goals. Data however is a single entity with vast amount of information. Be it Starfleet, on history and culture of humans, other races etc.
Data makes a fantastic captain.
This is one of my favorite scenes
Grate way to show the structure of the crew and the bit after about a friend ship is perfect it like there both the bigger man but same time both the more humble one in recognising each others predicament. Even data who is in command has to take actions he would not logical do so it pays to have worf. As his second in command it his tactical expertise plus data long term and quick logic which I feel makes them a grate pair.
Mr Data tugs on his uniform as of to say YES I FEEL GOOD IM IN CHARGE 😂 Love you Mr Data
If this was NuTrek, they would've been yelling and crying at each other with no differences resolved and be bitter towards each other for the rest of the series.
Brilliant. I adore this scene.
And Data would later go on to command the Enterprise-E (Star Trek: Countdown, the comic book prequel to the 2009 film).
Data sure knows how to tell you when you done goofed and help you understand that. Worf especially knows when to take responsibility in this case. Props to both of them.
This clip should be used for any lessons on professionalism
He does such a great job of what could’ve been a very boring role and making it one of the best yet still confirming to the restrictions of that that character.
Boss level accountability from Data and Worf 💯👍👍
I’m sorry but this is in my top 10 love this
Those are freakin boundaries!! Easy to see hard to set, great job TNG ❤️
haha Data is a pretty good study of Picard. not only does he work in a "make it so", he does the "other Picard Maneuver " at the end of the clip -- that little tug on his shirt is something Picard always does right after he stands up.
This is what professionalism looks like TNG held officers to the highest regards!
So cute to see data do the famous Picard "pull shirt down" thing
very well written. very well acted.
Brilliant. Star Trek TNG at its best.
I like Data's little Picard maneuver at the end... like "yeah... I can do this"
Worf was out of line, but he's not yet a command officer. He's temporarilly filling in for a role that is "above his pay grade" in experience. Junior officers frequently make mistakes of this kind. He just needs more time to grow in to his role.
hahaha that was a great touch! I never noticed that before!
Bro energy modeled perfectly.
This is just an example showing one of many things that make TNG the great things it's made of. In my opinion this was the best of the Star Treks.
Worf gets owned by Data! I'm watching this ep on Netflix.
And that's how adults settle a argument!
This scene was almost a little bit creepy. It made me realize that data is not truly "alive". Brent Spiner does a terrific job of portraying an Android with no soul. Data's face barely even moves just his mouth and he doesn't blink.
davetokes93 He's not "alive" by your limited standards.
Plus, what do you mean by a "soul"?
+Raymond Conlon Read your Bible, buddy.
I took your advice and read my bible (really though, I read my bible, and five other versions), and found this, "Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written."
Clearly, according to the bible, there's more to the God's revelation than is written in the bible.
In order to make that argument, you must first define life. You must also define a soul.
Don't start battles you can't win.
Came here for the title. 10 years ago it was .avi but today it's.mp4 or .mov!
Gambit.mkv?
Data continuous in a serious tone: "Do as you are told Mr. Worf. If I ever tell you to bend down, you bend down, understood?"
And both their hearts grew 10 sizes that day.
How to CHEW SOMEONE’s ASS OUT LIKE A PRO.
Klingon or no Klingon, you’d be crying later.
That's how it's done
Dealing with a Klingon in a Klingon way, only makes them respect you more. To the point, no bullshit.
