  • Introducing myself-- During the last three years I have dealt with chronic pain, lack of mobility, medical trauma, and several surgical procedures due to a foot injury. I also recently became a caregiver for my mom who was diagnosed with early onset dementia this February.
Below knee amputation really does sound like baloney amputation.

hey Lily, I am a recent amputee at 59, I have always been active and it hits hard. I understand where you are at totally; I am a christian and you need support from family and friends no doubt. I dont think i would make it without my beliefs. I know that its hard to make a decision on amputation, I realy was not given much of a choice at 12 midnight in the emergency room and had my surgery at 3am so I would become septic and die. So I reraly had very litle options . I wil pray for you mom and you and please feel you are not margilized , we all are chalenged and we go through many issues and life changing events.

I knew a guy that had one of his legs amputated below the knee due to an injury that would not heal correctly. He went through much pain and many surgeries to no avail. He finally had the amputation and got a Prosthetic leg. He was glad he did. No more pain. With long pants on you can't really tell that he has one leg.

Thanks for sharing; I am glad he is doing well. I worry because I feel like for every positive story, there is one that is quite negative-- nerve pain, prosthetics never fitting, etc.
I have a lot of social anxiety, but I actually don't think I'd mind if people saw I had a prosthetic.
It's interesting that his gait seems pretty normal!

Thank you for sharing your story. I'm a cancer patient at age 26 and have been for three years. I don't know if it gets easier or if i've gotten tougher, but your brain adjusts. And you are strong. Wish you well.

Hi Lily. I wish that I had seen your video earlier so that I could have commented when you made the video rather than doing so two months later. I want to tell you how sorry that I am that you are facing these struggles, both with your foot and your mom. Our prayers are very much with with you.
I recently had a right below-knee amputation at the age of 60. Like you, I can attribute it, in part, to peer pressure. Growing up, we were always told to "walk off" any injury. So a little over six months ago when I got a foot infection while doing a DYI project at home, I ignored the advice of my wife and let it go, figuring that my body would heal itself like it always did. But it didn't, and after a few weeks I finally went to the ER. While the doctors made every effort to save my foot, the infection ran too deep. So they cut off my foot. I just got my new prosthesis about three weeks ago and things have been going well so far. My amputation was complicated by diabetes that I didn't know that I had, so my healing was quite slow. It took nearly three months for my wound to heal. The upside for me was that I was able to do more leg-strengthening exercises in that time so my walking in a prosthesis is already pretty good. But it's still a process, one that I believe is best done by talking about things as you are doing here. I'd proud of you for opening up in front of a bunch of strangers. I think that you'll quickly find that the amputee community is pretty tight and very supportive. We've all been there and faced the same thing as you are now in our own way. We know exactly what you are going through when having to make such a life-altering decision.
At the tender age of 31, this has to be a very difficult choice. In my case that decision was made easier by the fact that the longer that I waited, the greater the risk that my infection (osteomyelitis) would move up my leg and require an above-knee amputation. That made it urgent that I get an amputation as quickly as possible. In retrospect, I am glad that I made the decision. Living with a prosthesis seems pretty doable based on what I've experienced so far. A few things are more difficult than before, but every day I learn how to live better.

Thanks for sharing your story, I can imagine that it was probably hard to take this vid. I hope you have people to talk to because the camera is pretty much a one way convo and real people are way more helpful. But if making videos helps you its great too, im looking forward to the next one :)

Thank you! I guess it feels like some form of connection, especially if I get to know people who are also struggling?
Life does seem to be full of one way conversations-- like appreciating landscapes, movies, books... they can't love you back or interact with you back. Maybe that is tragic...

I'm a right below knee amputee due to chronic pain from a foot injury. I have no regrets about my decision. Good luck on your journey.

Thank you! Do you mind if I ask what part of the foot you injured? Did you get any fusions before the BKA?

@lilyfrancfurt my ankle and top of foot were injured in a crush injury. I had a wieght bearing brace, much like the IDEO, but then elected for amputation. I have videos on my channel and you're more than welcome to view them and ask questions. I'd be happy to offer any insight.
