I recently joined a church where the security is extremely visible and seemingly not very friendly or communicative( verbally), I am a licensed and ordained minister, who hits the range twice a month , I'm a retired combat medic with 25 years active duty service. I do CC and EDC. I also suffer from PTSD. Your comment about identifying individuals in crisis or potential crisis and essentially having intervention or interaction like having a coffee is a real thing. Ministry (service) to Christ is loving people like Jesus did. I don;t know what training is involved for this particular team, but as a Christ follower, I'm sensitive to hurting people, not to smoke em or to "watch them", but to offer them the only thing that will ease their pain and bring them back to safety and that;s the love of God. But here's my point. I've been going to this church about 9 months now. I can literally feel the eyes probing into the back of my head while in church service. It interferes with my being able to worship freely. There should be a balance between " I don't know you, therefore I'm suspicious of you" and " I don't know you, but I would like to get to know you". Don't you think? ( The church is multi racial evangelical/ Pentecostal)

Just ran across this video in my feed, and you make some great points! One thing to keep in mind about the statistics is that the definition of "mass shooter" has recently changed to include gang shootings. The definition has also been altered among different sources to be either three or more people killed - excluding the shooter - or it could be four or more people injured during the shooting. The definition of "child" has also been changed to include people up to 20 years old, which combined with gang shootings increases the number of "children" killed exponentially (possibly a political move).
That said, your advice of saying this is an unlikely scenario is absolutely correct. Once you adjust the variables by removing gang violence, the number of actual "rampage killings" go down substantially.
As for the suicidal nature of many shooters, that is why I do not promote suicide prevention in its current form, especially when a person expresses homicidal tendencies along with their suicidal tendencies (you touched on that with shooters who knew some of their victims). I think it's safer to let a person "self delete" rather than counsel them out of it temporarily and end up with a rampage killing when they snap several weeks, months, or even years later. This is my personal opinion based on personal experience and I am open to a civil debate on this sensitive topic.
And always remember: The most effective defensive weapon is your mind. Keep doing your amazing and important work on this subject.

One needs to be prepared to defend oneself and loved ones. One needs to pray this never occurs.

Well for one, I lived at a church, and some of the important people there, were extremely evil and did bad things. Im not surprised a weak person who do a shooting , when you are supposed to be forgiving.

Not to leave one of those comments you mentioned (I think it's great to encourage evidence based mental health training in institutions that provide social services and support), but I'm struggling to understand why you're presenting this in the context of mass shootings. The report you linked to suggests the rates of mental health issues identified in the studies was comparable to the rates in the general population, and that taken as a whole, the rate of shooters with any mental health history (59%) is only slightly elevated from the general population. Moreover, the reporting also suggests mental health issues were incidental in the vast majority of these incidents.
Again, I don't mean to criticize you for discussing the need for more mental health literacy and training, but I have to ask whether the data supports the emphasis being placed on mental illness as a predictive indicator of the potential for acts of violence.

Fascinating stuff. We are starting another van route when the Lord can get us all together in his perfect timing for some kids from a Good News Club. I attended a big security meeting that we had a couple years ago talking about how everything worked with the Sunday school and other departments, it's astonishing how badly the devil has turned people away with the evil spirit in this world. Part of this is a prayer request, yes, for everything to come together. But part is just wondering if maybe you could have a video, if you haven't yet, on handling bus routes. We have one active van route, down from lots 20 years ago as people don't come on the buses or Vans anymore. And I think it would be good for church security teams elsewhere in the country to know that van routes are possible in this day and age. ( you might have already but I didn't have time to go through everything)

It seems like there is a lot of anger these days. I can't get my mind around how easily people are brought to anger, and how closed off they are to any kind of reasonable, casual discussion. Either the church totally caters to them or they are out and completely enraged.
At our congregation there is a pretty simple profile: they are minimally engaged, their knowledge of Christ and the Bible rely solely on religious cliches, and their attendance is specious. Maybe they want to cut the cords of fellowship and are looking for any excuse, but if that were the case I don't understand the rage.

@crayolascents: As a retired pastor of 35 years...and one who NEVER attends the church of my choice w/o my sidearm...folks are becoming more egocentric as the years pass on. When we are Me-centred, any- and every-thing will rub us the wrong way. Sadly, the last ten years I have worn my sidearm while preaching and before that always had it somewhere near me, usually my wife was armed. Over the decades, I watched folks who went from wanting to know what this church could do for them spiritually to what can this church do for them physically: pay my light bill, fill my tank, front my motel bill, fuel my habits, etc. No thought to Christ, just a thought of wresting some financials from the church. This stuff discussed on this channel is--sadly--not a joke or a hype, it's reality. Yes, folks are easily enraged these days. Just drive down any freeway and you'll see that this is the case. The world has become embittered towards the Kingdom, for they want money and handouts, not eternal life. In short, I fully understand your query, but there's no simple answer!

@@frederickwise5238 It sort of reminds me of the history of Israel in the Old Testament, where the generation of Joshua was willing to eradicate all idolatry, but by the time the era of kings was coming to a close, Jeremiah was threatened with death if he so much as mentioned God's word. A slow but sure hardening of hearts over time, until there are not enough righteous to sustain the land. Today's world certainly looks just like Israel in Jeremiah's day. I guess that's where we are on the clock. Peace out, my friend.

First let me say thank you for the information you put out on your site for Church Security, but how can you say shooting or being efficient with your fire arm should not be the emphasis? Why even have a security team? Ushers can then be suffient in awareness and no need for armed security. I understand that statistically a mass shooting is rare, but if it were to happen, armed Security Team members need to be proficient and knowledgeable with their fire arm and when to use it. The liability to innocent lives are at risk if untrained unproficient armed security members are carring.
