  • In this video James talks about his approach to mixing real drums using Waves plugins. In this second video in this series he looks at creating the perfect Hi Hat, Ride and Overhead sound using the JJP Signature plugins and uses the Kramer plugins to help glue the drums together

JJP Signature collection is absolutely tremendous , it was my first Signature bundle pack working super fast, super effective and sounding so thick and colourful ....i love it and i still using that particular plugins combined with CLA, Maserati and Maroquin Signature series.
    Thanks for sharing James:)))

I watched your two videos about it and liked it because it's awesomely well explained and well produced, but i don't actually like how it sounds in the end. It reminds me the way i was mixing a few years ago : Way less natural and powerfull drums than what we can do with only EQ/Overdrive/Compressors and and sometimes some reverbs and/or gated reverb onto the snare ! Not to say I've never been a fan of those automatic things by the way. Also, some plugins like the Kramer Tape or the RCompressor seems very interesting anyway.

Sounds great. I'm surprised to see the hi-hat as a stereo channel.

Thank you!! It sounds killer and epic like you say!! You put the Kramer tape on the Master strip right? If you intend to add other instruments and vocals to the session, would you have to create some sort of a group or bus and send in all the drums and put your Kramer tape on that group or bus?? Thanks :)

Hi James, the drums sound fantastic, and the bass drum is absolutely killer :)
But already the raw track sounded very good and punchy, which just shows one more time how important it is to get a good recording in the first place.
Two questions: so you usually don't use a compressor on the drums bus, just a tape emulation? And I noticed that you used mostly stereo tracks for the mics... any specific reason for that? Thanks!

The Waves JJP and CLA plug in makes the tracks stereo. All my drum tracks start mono.
I have 2 or 3 goto drum buss processors depending on the sound I want. Tape emulation is just one of them.

I was just curious how you record your voice at the same time as you're doing your mix tutorial? Thank you for the information!

Any benefit to having your kick and snare etc...on stereo tracks instead of mono? Drums sound great by the way.

When you add the CLA plugin to a track it puts in in stereo. I was a little confused by this when I bought the plug-in. This would be helpful if you bussed all of your toms to a separate stereo track with the CLA plugin assuming you would apply the same settings to all of the toms. You could pan them from the source track. You could bus the kicks as well to a kick bus with CLA but. I sent some tracks to a client and they were complaining about the stereo kick and snare tracks. I’m not sure of a work around if you want to use CLA. I believe it does this because some of the processing is in stereo.

I am not familiar with the Kramer HLS Plug in. On the overheads - is that a Boost or a Cut of the Bass Frequencies? The Selector is set to 120hz. Thanks.

QUICK QUESTION I SEE ALL YOUR WAV FILES/AUDIO FILES ARE MONO BUT THE ACTUAL TRACK IS STEREO HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE? FOR EXAMPLE IF IMPORT A MONO TRACK ON TO A STEREO TRACK IT WILL NOT ALLOW ME TO DO SO AND VISE VERSA FOR A STEREO TO MONO. I USE PRO TOOLS 8 LE MAC OSX 10.6.8

Shit in => shit out. Room is awfull, and drums are far too gated. Would be better to edit toms, as there is false gating. Hi-passing OH, makes the drums very nasal. Better to notch around 300hz-400hz and to actually boost some bass around 100hz shelf, as well as Hi shelf. The all problem with those tutorial, is that every sound are made in solo. The only way to do it right, is listening to the all drums, and equing in context. This way you will understand that it is actually better to boost 100Hz on OH than to cut them, as it will blend better with the kick and the toms. And and the end you will much less eqing than balancing.
