    a common thread i have noticed with old school mixers is that because they are constrained by the amount of hardware they have, they were forced to make more cohesive / glued mixes than people who mix ITB today. if anything they were fighting to create separation whereas people ITB are struggling to make their stuff gel / glue

      Yup and I think people can be spoiled by options these days because of the ability to use so many instances of effects and unlimited eq notches etc and making some over complicate things and come up with contrived processes when it's not really that deep! 😁 (I know that cause I've been there lol)

      Yes its what i call the lazy and lost engineer! They slap a ton of plugings and expect a perfect mix or everything to be automated for them. This is stupid i always advise aspireing engineers to learn their tools first then start collecting bits here and there that are to ur taste and style. Buying everything and having tons of plugins is more of a hinderance than a help. Most dont even know 1 plugin very well cuz they have so many to play with that they cant become proficient with any.

    This is one of the most important concepts in mixing, IMO. Ever notice how it’s much easier to mix live sound than it is to mix a truly *great* sounding record? Of course...that’s because you’re provided with a space. Venues and halls lend automatic “dimension” to music. Recording is the direct opposite. Many times you’re presented with the driest possible sound. If you don’t give the music a nice space in which to exist, it will never sound the way you hear it in your head.

    If you run Reaper, it's super easy to send multiple tracks to a single reverb, and out to a delay, without any outboard gear or console. You can create 4 reverb tracks, 4 delay tracks, and send any track in/out, back, forth, whatever... and manipulate them on the fly in the mixer panel.

    • @paaao
      @paaao 4 роки тому

      @@devianthousend not in pro tools. You can't have tracks be midi one minute, and audio the next in protools. You can't mix the two on a track. You are limited as all hell in pro tools as to what tracks can be sends, receives, aux returns, midi/audio, etc, etc... Routing and re-routing on the fly in pro tools to hear what the I/O changes bring about is a giant pain in the ass.

    Actually organic in art only means that the art itself naturally leads from beginning to middle to end without apparent seems; so when CLA says he tries to blend the returns so you can’t quite pinpoint the landscape - that simply means you’re making the landscape organic (transients naturally leading into the next without artifacts presenting themself e.g.). Love the lesson and the analogy’s, always informational to listen to CLA! 🎶💯

    My initial struggles were getting the outboard gear to mix loud enough. Getting a strong influence. As I learned more, there are ways to monitor and manipulate levels, thereby adjusting the mix for prominent results. Plug-ins are still somewhat a struggle, where I am not getting enough influence from the plug-in. Of course Waves is the exception, Waves plug-ins work and you can tell they’re active and what they’re doing with quick A/B. I need more powerful EQing and that’s certainly my focus next Black Friday. Thank you Waves, keep up the great work. -Jim

    You see you have mixing engineers... And then you have mixing artists - and his stuff with the delays and verbs is what I strongly consider as art. Probably the main reason why his mixes always sound drastically different and more vivid than the others.
