They are great cars that despite not having the fanciest interior or MMI, they do have a lot of tech and are far more capable off-road than the class competitors. I owned a 2017 Crosstrek. I commuted from Reno to Sacramento each weekend through 3 winters. It was an ideal car for that kind of driving. The car is immensely popular as a used car in the Lake Tahoe & Reno basin with high school kids so it had a high resale value. What I liked about the car was it was comfortable & reliable in bad winter conditions. I drove through 2 really snowy winters without ever getting stranded or having an accident. I never had to put on chains which are required in California during bad winter conditions. I did see the battery issue that has been mentioned in the comments. I had to replace my battery once. I didn’t find the Eyesight system all that helpful. I was sorry to see it is standard on new Subarus.
Bout time. I had a 16 crosstrek. That's why i got rid of it. Was kinda sketchy on on ramps. The 2.5 in the forester feels so much torquier, so I imagine in the lighter crosstrek it feels even better. THANK YOU SUBARU!!!
Yes i own 2024 limited Crosstrek with the 2.5 L I can confirm it makes the drive lot smoother than the base and not as lurchy to shift. Plus the fuel economy isn’t much of a loss either, averaging about 27 mpg in winter driving recently.
The Crosstrek at $31k fully loaded is a heck of a lot of car for the money. Adaptive LEDs, Nav, carplay, rear auto braking, Harman/Kardon speakers, all the safety tech. That must be why people buy em. The people I know who have a Crosstrek absolutely love it.

I drove one yesterday and was not impressed!!! I was a the dealer becaus the subaru my mother purchased less than a year ago had chronic battery drain . Always finder her car with dead battery. This was the second time she has had it in for the same problem. Subaru is under class action lawsuit for this and other problems that remain un repaired and have from 2016 through 2020. Think twice before buying one!!
I have a 2018 Limited. It is VERY nice. I love how the headlights turn with the car. It would be awesome if it had the 30 extra HP that this 2021 has. A bit cramped on the inside as it is based of the Impreza but it is still like driving a Swiss Army Knife. The AWD and X mode plus amazing ground clearance make it the best most capable AWD vehicle I have ever had. Best part about it is mine is completely paid off lol.
Rugged? It’s a cute FAMILY ORIENTED CVT (no gears) AWD (not 4x4 high or low) Literally worse offroad then a Kia but marketed to sell vehicles It’s not a Army knife it’s literally a lifted pavement oriented gutless cute girly sedan
I wish Subie would make a larger higher performance vehicle. The WRX and STI are great, but some of us have kids and dogs and still want something fun(ish) to drive. Oh and swap out the CVT for a real transmission like a manual or dual-clutch auto.
I traded a 2017 WRX Standard in for a Sport Crosstrek. I had a 2014. Loved the car HATED the lack of power. Alway said if they put the same engine in it that my wife’s 16 Forester has in it, I would consider getting one. Now that we live on a dirt road in Northern Idaho, this car makes better sense than the WRX with its higher ground clearance. I thought about doing a one inch lift on the WRX, but enjoy the fact that I no longer have to worry about blowing up a turbo or engine(yes. I USED the turbo all the time to it’s fullest). I also like the fact that I can use regular gas in the Crosstrek........ still will need to get a catch can for the PCV side because of direct injection. That DID help on the WRX. Loving the extra power on this new car. It’s no WRX, but at least it’s drivable now.......
And again the Manual Trans crowd will have to settle for the base level stuff including engine....Guess I'll save a few bucks and do the 2.5 swap on my 2016.
how is the engine mechanically? that's my only stopping point. don't want to spend a ton on repairs simply because the mechanic has to do extra work that would otherwise be quick job on another type of engine.
2018, Subaru had 119 problems per 100 vehicles sold in the first year of ownership, lawsuits causing recalls for engine block burning oil to cracking windshields, extending CVT warranties.. Real stats. However you all can keep believing the cult of Subaru and their social media online forums propaganda.

@@jonjackson2029 I was a Subaru tech for awhile. They are a very small company with a very loyal customer base. I think between not having a lot of money to do R&D and not wanting to piss off their base they have to be a bit conservative. Toyota is the same way although they have the money. Also I think the Sti stuff is a bit fragile when you turn up the power. And then they have to make the decision now about going electric. Maybe an electric Sti is the way to go.

I understand that the automatic engine start/stop systems on these new Subarus are terrible. Very rough and abrupt. Lots of owner complaints. Subaru needs to make this system easy to disable. On the Outback, the disable feature is buried in an on-screen menu.
The start/stop feature on the Crosstrek is a one button affair on the bottom of the instrument panel. However, if you want to disable the feature, you'll have to do it every time you start the car as there is no permanent disable feature. At least not from Subaru.
It's a shame all the traction wagons (and BRATs) rusted away in the 90s. Those things were EVERYWHERE here in Colorado when I was a kid. Such unique vehicles that stood out even in a time when most vehicles were distinct from one another. Now subarus are amongst the most boring vehicles you can buy. I guess if you need AWD and decent fuel economy they're a good choice but they really make me yawn
Sorry Subaru. Still not swayed. I will never consider anything with a CVT, especially one like yours that cuts power in off road situations where you need wheel speed/slip to get around/over the obstacle.

@@brew-doo5500 only x-mode 2 does that, which is only available on two specific trim levels. It does allow some wheel spin, but too much will kick it out of x-mode. They stlill have the same problem with the CVT’s overheating and so it will cut power when that starts to happen. The problem is the CVT.
The perennial favorite of the constantly late-for-work crowd around me. Regularly seen jerking and lurching around doing 20 over still covered in snow. Seems like a quite decent vehicle from the ones i've worked on but I swear it's shit like that attracting the Subaru hate

Good improvement, I like the 2021 Crosstrek, next they have to work on how noisy this ride is, seal it from outside noise! After that, maybe a turbo option would take it to the top.
This car doesn’t make sense to me. The Impreza has always been lighter, faster, more fuel efficient, and cheaper overall, yet same size inside. The only thing this has over an Impreza is the added 2 inches of ground clearance. I’d way rather buy a 2010 Impreza hb for $5k than spend $30k on a new Crosstrek, just cause it finally has the engine from the impreza from 10 years ago.
You'd be missing out on the additional safety features of the new car. The chassis of the current Crosstrek is already an improvement over the previous generation's. I got my '21 Crosstrek Sport for $24,500.
It would (imo) be nice to have the option of a turbo on that motor...a 225 hp or so motor with a modern auto (non CVO) would raise the bar on this solid offering. Not a fan of the CVO.
Kinda sad how the sport model doesn’t get LED headlights. Also they never mentioned how it doesn’t come w rear air vents or a power lift gate. These should all be standard. Take note Subaru, and you can have an even better car. Just perk up the engines again and watch sales sky rocket

CVT makes no sense I get 30+mpg with 2.4 L 5 speed with my Honda. Has over 200 hp N/A engine no need for turbo.

They NEED to put this engine in the Impreza and bring back the 2.5 RS badge of the late 90's and early 2000's McRae glory days. But they won't.
I had a 2000 2.5 RS. It was a great car but the engine was not it's strong point and this is pretty much the same engine from back then.
It did have style, great ergonomics and visibility, was still the best handling car I've ever had and was an absolute beast in the snow.

Toyota bought a big chunk of Subaru several years ago . They should be using many more shared components by now.
For sure, especially when you have the new BRZ with the 2.4 Flat four putting out 228HP naturally aspirated
