We've got a busy week in the PlayStation world as we exit GDC 2024 and PAX East. We've got word that developers don't see the value in PS5 Pro, and publishers raising concerns about supporting Xbox amid their falling sales in Europe. From PAX we have details on the FFXVI DLC The Rising Tide. And also this week we have Stellar Blade press previews and demo! We also can't forget Sony is continuing to add incremental features to PS5 by announcing changes to Game Help, and launching a new feature in beta for the PS Mobile app. Definitely a lot to unpack this week, so could you please clear some room on that table so I can get this stuff out. It'll be easier to sort if we take everything out first and start looking at it from there.

I’m hoping with Jim Ryan gone the new leaders will push for more PS2 emulation or even possibly PS3 emulation.
There are actually rumours of Sony partnering with PCSX2 team to get a PS2 emulation onto the PS5 for PS2 games, so we may see it happening.
@@saccollathe cold water has already been poured on that rumour, plus the actual team in question are no longer associated with PCSX2
That was never a Jim Ryan problem (if it was, there wouldn't be any PS1 or PSP emulators in the first place right now). A lot of it is down to complex licensing issues (besides their own published games) and poor emulators. The one that the current small library uses doesn't work very well on PS5 so they need to scrap it and make a new one first.

PS5 Pro biggest supporters will be Sony first party Studio's it's self. Im interested in PS5 Pro but I wanna see a strong first party line up of Games PlayStation is known for. And the abilities of the more powerful hardware.

My poor PS5 is with SquareTrade at the moment due to getting caught in a lightning strike power surge. They almost didn't want to help me because it happened less than a month after my warranty* I bought with them expired (Feb 2021-Feb 2024), but thankfully they changed their mind.
*Sony offered extended warranties with the Vita and PS4, which I purchased. They did not offer them with PS5 for some reason.

You gotta use a Surge Protector Outlet set.
I use the Rocket Fish Best Buy branded ones. But you do have to replace it once the Surge limit is reached to keep your stuff protected.
It does indicate when it's protected, and when it isn't. . . I personally rather buy an outlet bar over and over than lose a whole console and have to replace it with another $499 purchase.
@cMARVEL360 I did, but apparently it didn't work. I'll have to look into the one you have, as I've been looking at replacing it. I was mainly looking into the APC brand.
Thankfully the other stuff that was connected to it didn't get messed up (Internet Router, Wii U, Dreamcast, charging stands for Wii U GamePad, DualSense, Series X controllers). The Xbox Series X didn't get damaged because it wasn't plugged in due to non-frequent use.
Also, I wasn't aware this was a thing you could do, but I'm looking into whole home surge protectors too.
@@dapperfan44I could be wrong, but pretty sure a surge protected power strip/ outlet won't protect U against lightning strikes. The surge protection is only for slight power fluctuations on the grid.
Probably the only way to protect against lighting strikes is to disconnect devices from the outlet during storms. Again, could b wrong, but I wouldnt count on that stuff protecting against lightning

Stuff we need in future PlayStation updates
1. Being able to separate party chat audio from recordings when sharing them
2. Being able to use voice keyboard inside of games
3. Fix an annoying bug that suspends your game when trying to save a clip with a full storage, thus deleting your clip
4. Being able to record System UI
5. Explore tab in all regions
6. This is more of a visual thing but it would be cool to make the default selection in the quick menu to be on the home button rather than being on the far left
7. I'm not a storage expert but if it's possible to make video clips and screenshots to save on your m.2 SSD that would be helpful!
8. Letting more 3rd party services the ability to create media apps for the PlayStation
9. PlayStation Stars being in all regions
10. Being able to see game update history
11. Backing up save files using a usb on PS5 and not being limited to cloud storage only
12. PS4 players should be able to see your share screen
13. Ability to buy avatars on ps5 like you used to do on ps4
These were some of the most important things that the current state for the PS5 software need after owning the console since launch day.

I was saying make there an option to separate party chat from recordings after it being saved not before. This can be useful for sharing clips and do not want to share the party audio
This last news caught me by surprise because I didn't see it make any headlines, but it's quite serious. If publishers start dropping direct support for shipping games for xbox no wonder they want to be more open to get different stores in their platform.
You got the events backwards. Xbox sales have been dipping year over year. And the rumors for months now have been that Xbox games will also come to ps5. They’ve already been going to PC. So developers are now wondering why they should develop for Xbox and not just PS and PC since Xbox is becoming a much smaller market are showing their own lack of confidence in their ability to make money on their own systems.
If someone tells you they’re not confident in their business why would you invest in it?
Xbox is tryna further backwards compatibility and do many other things.
They haven't fully gave up on physical as they dumped $100 million into GameStop 3 years ago..

Yeah, I used game help to help me platinum The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered. What was really handy was it only showed me which collectibles that I was missing. It was very handy.

I think the biggest value PS5 Pro will being, is the performance for additional ray tracing features support, as well as 60 fps through its machine learning upscaling. At least it is my hope that a great ML upscaling similar to DLSS will allow games to have both image quality and 60fps in the future.
II think the PSVR2 adapter would be needed for pretty much every desktop PC, with the only exception being some top end AMD cards have USB C out on them (and older nvidia) but if you have a laptop you wont need an adapter most likely. Since USB C with higher power, displayport and USB 3 is basically standard. Only issue might be some might be wired to the igpu (but many are wired directly) which may be problematic for latency (or maybe not) for VR

I'm sticking with my original PS5 launch console. Didn't get for the slim model and definitely not getting the Pro either.
The slim model wasn't an upgrade in any way though. If anything it was a bit of a downgrade. A pro model would be an upgrade.
The updated speaker volume on controller was much needed can’t believe it took them 3 years to do it

What is the point of the Stars thing? As far as I know you can't earn anything tangible. With Xbox Rewards you can convert your points to money off vouchers or help pay for game pass.
Either I'm not lucky or something's wrong because while the Demo is out, I've yet to actually see it myself. I checked it out on the PS Store off-console and I just get an error when trying to add it to my Library.
Game Help always sounded really useful but of course I don't have PlayStation Plus so it is not helpful. Now that we are getting Community Game Help I have the opportunity to provide help in places I have struggled. I am very excited.
If at least they made PS5 Pro as horizontal box so it can fit in my cabinet, no flimsy stands, then I might be interested
I personally wouldn’t mind trading in towards a ps5 pro this holiday season. I’m sure many games old and new will benefit from the gate so I don’t see an issue as a consumer.
As someone who plays both PS5 and PSVR2 games, I can literally only see PSVR2 developers being able to use a PS5 PRO to its fullest.

Perhaps these Devs need reminding that their obsession with pushing pointless graphical features over image quality and frame rate is the whole reason the Pro exists.
No-one outside of Digital Foundry gives a crap whether the underside of a table is correctly lit, or if the entire level is reflected in a character's eyes.
Insomniac and Guerilla have shown that games can be incredibly beautiful and still have great image quality at 60fps, all it takes is to use the "old" tried and tested shortcuts and tricks rather than the more accurate but ultimately unnecessary techniques like Ray-Tracing.
Save all the fancy stuff for next generation when the hardware is more capable of doing it.

What a waste
FF16 is one of the few PS exclusive games I haven't picked up, but I'm glad to hear they are rolling out additional DLC and QoL updates. I absolutely loved the Demo. With the continued support, I'm hoping it means we may see a PS5 pro update in the future that allows it to run at 60 fps in resolution mode (or at least a locked 40 fps for those with a 120 hz tv) or potentially uses better upscaling tech for performance mode with PSSR. The poor performance mode results combined with the decision to used FSR1 just put me off from deciding to immediately buy. Hopefully they also release a complete edition that includes all updates and DLC on disc. One of those games I know I will get, just a matter of when is right time to pick it up.

The spec differences of the PS5 Pro, in addition to 1TB vs 840GB storage don't make it a very compelling proposition. It seems pointless to both consumers and devs alike.

Thank you for keeping the Days Gone 2 situation clear. It's interesting to me how so many people keep thinking that it was Sony proper who rejected the pitch when in reality (at least according to Garvin and Ross) it didn't make it past Bend leadership.

Always great info, Thank You! For me, I feel studios still should develop good single player games. Figure a way to make their money that way. Lots of people don’t have time to play online and get good to compete with people that play 10-16 hours a day. No fun spending the hour or 2 you might get to play with getting your butt kicked😂. If they make more games like Horizon, GoW, Last of Us, Witcher, etc… I will pay 100+ for those games.. I put 200-300 hours in them… boy do I get my money’s worth!
If they ever run out of Star War games from the PS1/PSP games they could always port the PC games
Bend Studio being quiet for so long after Days Gone only now to be revealed to be working on a live service game has to be one of the most disappointing news this year. My anticipation for their new project has totally evaporated.

Unfortunately Horizon Forbidden West actually does have a few pretty significant issues. Essentially there seems to be some sort of memory leak or something. After 15 minutes to an hour the game can drop to half its framerate and get stuck there. Fast traveling seems to trigger it faster. Some people can avoid it by turning off Nvidia reflex or HAGs in windows. But unfortunately not everyone

Devs don't see a point in PS5 Pro.
Also devs: Can not achieve a stable 60 fps even reducing the resolution to 720p, heck they can't even get a steady 30 fps lately.
Sure in most cases its not a PS5 fault, but in the state of the game industry today, things are not going to improve in the future.
So In my opinion, PS5 Pro is very much needed.
Actually the exact opposite is the case. If devs can't use the already strong hardware and optimise their games, giving them more hardware will only result in more problems for the current hardware. The industry is in a catastrophic state and needs to stabilise first.
I don't know why, but seemed that we went from a few months of "this game in performance mode looks blurry" to "what is the point of the PS5 Pro".
The point is simple, visually appealing performance modes of demanding games and even better visuals in the quality modes.
@@derjoghurtmitderecke Yeah i agree, but since release of ps5 pro is inevitable, at least it will be able to bruteforce higher dynamic resolution and decent image quality in most future samples of "great optimization".

I don't understand the negativity around PS5 Pro. It is not a generation change - so people aren't going to miss out on games and don't have to buy one. Also, about the devs, they literally don't have to do anything - Sony's intentionally built it such that there are not back-compat issues especially the CPU side. All the devs have to do is to make sure it runs on PS5 and it'll automatically run the Pro as well as it does on the base model if not better.
Because they sold us a mediocre original console that had very little to shoe for it already

I don't think Sony should do day and date PC, look what happened to Microsoft. It will definitely hurt console sales, and the less people buying consoles, the less people getting a subscription, buying 3rd party games, so on and so on. The single player games don't really sell well enough on PC to justify that.
I've owned every PlayStation ever released. I'm a huge PlayStation fan, even I would consider just playing on PC if I could get everything there day and date

After playing the demo all the comparisons to it are kind of wrong. This is the most alike to FF16 gameplay when playing Stellar Blade.

The biggest hurt against the Pro was when it was said recently that GTA 6 is unlikely to run at 60fps. If it's not going to do that due to what I've been hearing is CPU limitations, then it really is pointless if all it really gets is better RT.

With the reputation live service had gotten, SIE is probably relegating those live service models to their lower-risk studios like Bend. It's a way to protect their major headliners i.e. Naughty Dog, Santa Monica, Insomniac et al. But it could endanger Bend and be left hanging in case their live service game fails.
