    For people who worried about the fuel consumption, know that the Patrol is a much larger car than the Land Cruiser (naturally larger and heavier consumes more fuel) plus it's almost $40k savings (when you factored in driveaway costs), that buys you 3 lifetime of petrol supplies.

    • @koffeeblack
      @koffeeblack 9 місяців тому +37

      But when you go to sell the patrol compared to the landcruiser you will loose much more money.

      So what you do as I have done is buy a good patrol 2nd hand. That way you address both issues - avoid the initial depreciation smack and benefit from incredible value. Land Cruiser I would buy if I went new. Patrol is such a buy 2nd hand.

    • @micahfodor8433
      @micahfodor8433 9 місяців тому +6

      I'm not sure it is a much larger car once you look up the dimensions. Plus 40k only buys you 300 fill ups. That's not even 1 lifetime of fuel

    • @edgarchieng2130
      @edgarchieng2130 9 місяців тому +25

      @@koffeeblack Have you checked the market? The sale price of used Patrol vs Land Cruiser is relative to the price the seller paid when brand new. This is the part people don't understand, they look at used market price for both and Patrol is lower but novice like you will think this is because it depreciates more but in reality Patrol was already $40k cheaper retail 😂

    • @edgarchieng2130
      @edgarchieng2130 9 місяців тому

      @@micahfodor8433 It's a much larger car overall not in dimension (you can only go so big in dimension for road compliant) but the overall volume and mass. It's a taller car, bigger boot, bigger interior, bigger seats, bigger wheels, bigger engine. As for the petrol figures, you obviously need to exclude the standard consumption usage (since both are still an ICE engine), I'm talking the difference in the price and the fuel consumption between 300 and Y62, which is circa 4-5L variance per 100KM. So at $1.8/L average petrol price per L, $40K will buy you 22,222L of fuel, that equates to 444,440KM of additional bridge range break even on the Land Cruiser 300 upfront cost.

    Bought my Ti-L in June 2023 and its been amazing since. It looks like I have grown into this large car. It is a great vehicle to drive and is way better than any other 4X4's out there in the market. Particularly at a price point you get this for, it is a no brainer.

    I am completely agree with you. Money talks. Patrol is 35k$ (or 35% of it's price) cheaper. And that has weight. Yes it is a little bit older especially when you look at the infotainment tech. But LC300 has a lack of space on 2nd row, smaller trunk and flimsy shaking hood, which seems to be made of foil. I have never been a Nissan's fan but price for LC is astronomical. Patrol Warrior on 35s would be the best choice in this segment, at least for me.

      @@Drivecomauthe VK56 engine used in the Patrol WAS used as the basis of the engine powering the Nissan’s when that ran in V8 Supercars championship! The VK56VD version used in the current Patrol is definitely NOT “old-school” as you reported as it is 32-valve, quad-cam, direct fuel injected V8 with the VVEL system that provides for continuously variable valve-lift and timing which allows nearly flat torque delivery through-out rev range from low RPM and improves the fuel usage. Probably one of the most advanced engines today without resorting to any forced induction complexity. Plus, put on a 3” exhaust and the engine sounds glorious - much better better than a diesel v6 muted by turbos.

    I’ve got an older Jeep running a 5.7 HEMI with cylinder deactivation. It’s a 5 speed auto. Driving 6000km from the west to east coast in 100% bog stock form - including continental road tyres - I averaged out at around 12.5l/100 from memory (not towing). The best I got was around 11.9 but that was around 85-90km/h. It was only me and some gear on the trip, prob around 300kg. Around town it’s a totally different story at around 19/20l per 100. I’d imagine the Patrol would be similar. It’s a 7 speed but a lot heavier and no cylinder deactivation. The big V8’s are at home on the open road and will punish your wallet elsewhere. The 300 will shine in either environment. Both vehicles are bullet proof, their reputation is legendary. If I were only using the vehicle for open road and towing I’d go the patrol. If it were a daily I’d go the 300🤘🤘

    Excellent comparison. In South Africa with fuel at about AU$2 per litre I could so about 300,000km to make up the difference in price. So I would choose the Patrol over the Cruiser. The only consideration here is that after 5 years the Cruiser would have a substantially better trade in value than the Patrol due to dealer support. So that would be a consideration for us here if trade in after 5-7 years is a requirement. Thanks for an interesting and detailed review.

      If they were the same price you’d choose the Landcruiser every day as it’s more refined and has less fuel consumption, but with a 30k saving on the patrol and the patrol cloud like feel suspension, similar good off road performance, more spacious cabin with better visibility for the driver - the patrol start to look more attractive than the Landcruiser. I have the Landcruiser GR WHICH BY THE WAY COSTs Nearly 50k more than the patrol and the visibility is very poor, below my expectations from Toyota. My friends patrol has better driver visibility, cloud like suspension and the V8 petrol engine is smoother than my Landcruiser especially on road, and feels smoother. The petrol v8 sounds great better than my Landcruiser especially when you give it some. I do expect that my GR Landcruiser will be better off road as it’s got a fair bit better off road capability than the Sahara tested here on this show. GR Landcruiser and all Landcruiser in general look more modern inside and out I feel. Also Landcruiser should theoretically resale value better.

    I'm impressed with the production, this is a big step ahead, and the subject was worth it.
    I'd say, as I've been saying from the get go, that the Land Cruiser looks shockingly bad, is shockingly cramped, has stupid features like that vibrating hood, and is uselessly expensive. I'm pretty sure however the new powertrain, despite the worries it's generating, can't do worse than the previous 4.5 V8 TD.
    The Patrol on the other hand is probably the most majestic-looking car on the Australian roads (thank you for doing it justice with this white paint), has awesome capabilities, is spacious, comfortable, sits you truck-high, drives well and is a dream come true as far as a big comfortable all-capable SUV.
    Add to that the existence of the cheaper yet awesome TI Patrol and the more expensive but all-powerful Warrior version. What a legend.

    I am starting to lean the same way. When you do the sums based upon price difference and fuel consumption difference, it takes several hundred thousand kilometres of use to start to bring the more modern and frugal Toyota in line with the Patrol. Most people will not keep the vehicle that long. Some say what about resale value. Well, how many people still want that V8 sound? That alone will push the Patrol resale value up as more vehicles go to smaller engines with fewer cylinders.

I think it would be easier to live with the LC due to it being a bit smaller and it’s better fuel consumption, but in saying that the light coloured carpet would need extra covering to stay clean otherwise this part of the vehicle would be a pain to live with.

      True, the LandCruiser feels a little easier to drive around the suburbs, and the newer technology helps. But I'd be giving the beige interior a wide berth. Coming from a Prado the y62 for me is such a nice 4wd and on road it's damn good. Not going to do much off road stuff with the y62 so i don't need any mods for it(stock will do beach driving fine for fishing trips) On fuel usage i really don't know as of yet, my Y62 TI-L has done under 100kms haha but it doesn't worry me as i bought this car to replace 2 (sold both of my old cars) as its a mix of a V8 and a wagon and RWD / 4WD. It also doesn't have much tech in it which i love, no beeps and bongs going off like crazy to drive you nuts. Also i don't know why but i like the interior, i must be getting old(I'm in my early 40's) The biggest thing for me as well, like the LC200 the y62 has been all over Aus in all different conditions and it is reliable and i would argue the engine(was used in nascar) and drive train is the same level as Toyota. LC300 yet to prove it self and from what i hear i don't think it's going to be better than the LC200.

    It is a excellent test drive. As for me, I think even Patrol Y62 with modern interior (for West Asia market) beats much more newer Land Cruiser in pretty every way. So can you even imagine how much better new Y63 will be? As far as we know now, it will come with three different drive trains: base model will get a modernised 4-cyl 2.3 turbo diesel Renault, then it will be followed by petrol 3.0 twin turbo V6 from current Nissan Z sports car and on the top of the range we will get a hybrid model, probably based on the same 3.0 twin turbo petrol V6 or on 4.0 petrol V6 - base engine for current Y62 in Middle East market. So, yes, it will drop a gorgeous 5.6 petrol V8, but Nissan can't make a magic - today's emissions standards, especially here in Europe are pretty strict.

Some have used 200K miles without any single hiccup! There is no need to pay more $$$ for a Land cruiser when Armada/patrol is around. • @tempestv8

    The 10 year old Nissan Patrol is not ancient. Cue in the 70 Series Land Cruiser. That's next level.
    As for the comparison with the 300 Series, the Patrol feels like a Tardis compared to the 300 which has virtually no cargo space with the 3rd row seats up, and the Toyota's 2nd row footwell feels super cramped especially with the intruding hump on the floor compared to the flat floor in the Patrol. Not sure how Toyota managed to lose so much interior space in this new design. Virtually half a size smaller than the Patrol, which makes the Nissan a more spacious and comfortable touring vehicle. The 300 is definitely less bulky for inner city driving.
    The Patrol's V8 is a proven engine although it prefers 95 octane. The 300 has an unproven new diesel engine, far too new to determine if it's a reliable engine, especially given Toyota's spotty history with their small diesel engines like the cracking pistons saga with the 1KD and DPF and dusting issues with the 1GD.
    Good review, all the salient points have been presented, and potential buyers are getting a well informed review. Definitely "horses for courses", not a clear definitive winner.

      @@8U5HM8 My first hand experience with the 300 is that the center hump is terrible for whoever sits in the center seat. Especially compared to the 200 series or 150 series Prado, where the floor is virtually flat. And as for the 3rd row, we can have the seats in use and still fit an Engel 40 litre sideways behind the seats in the 200. No chance of that in the 300. Some refer to the 300 as a "long nose Prado" - this UA-cam video that gives empirical evidence by way of a measuring tape. Except I already came to those conclusions before that video even came out:

    The 2nd row doesn’t slide in the LC300! Does it slide in the Patrol?
    Your test case would fit in the 300, just flip it on it’s edge. But yeah the Patrol has a larger load space.

Our Nissan is called the "Armada" and is dumbed down without the real off road goodies. If Nissan took out all the luxury crap and added in the off road goodies like locking diffs and marketed it as "the real Land Cruiser you can't get anymore", they'd sell like crazy. Also, we still are too early to judge the reliability of a new 300 engine and transmission, maybe in couple of more years we will know for sure if Toyota made it right from the beginning, or it needs to be fixed here and there. So, if money is not an issue and you are not planning to keep a car for longer than 5 years, Toyota is a better choice, but if you are planning to keep the car for a decade, Patrol with its proven NA 5.6 V8 is your choice, despite the extra $ at the pump

    For 40k less there are decent upgrades available for the patrol, and still plenty left over for accessories.
    No diff diff locks on land cruiser is a letdown

      You could probably spend a little bit on the interior and infotainment, to help bring it up to speed. I'd love one with Apple Carplay and Android Auto. - Sam

    Stats show that 75% of Australians own a Toyota LC, and the remaining 25% drive a Patrol, most because they are cheaper than Toyota, some because they were born into it, I have towed more than my share of nissans out of trouble, so its a Toyota LC for sure, however, I own and drive a F250, costly but soooooo worth it.

    I think the Patrol should be vimpared to the GX Landcruiser 300, whuch is an off road rugged vehicle. This white coloured interior is onviously not for off roading. Or cimpare it to the GR sport petrol, that will be interesting to see the performance differences…

    Looks wise i much prefer the patrol. I find the 300 quite ugly especially being how good looking the 200s are, i do love a decent cruiser but for me its the patrol in this one!!! Those v8s once add an exhaust sound glorious too!!!

    you will drive LC million km it's ok. but if you drive NP around 500k km you will get problom and again again you will get maintenance. so LC better than NP

    Both vehicles tool different lines/angles while off-roading thus no clear conclusion can be drawn, it would be better to employ rollers to check the performance of traction control system.

      If nothing else, you wouldn't have to save as long for the Patrol as you would for the Cruiser 🤣 Glad you enjoyed the video. Sam has some other great off-road and SUV vids to check out, so be sure to browse the channel for those.

    Would it not make sense to compare the two cars at the same retail value? Your comparing luxury at 35k more to the Til. Compare the gx or whatever the price equivalent is. Extremely confused as your comparing creature comforts and electric seats in the rear, if you were paying 135k on a patrol it would have all the fruit too im sure 🤔

    lt appears that we are seeing a comparison between a 200 and a 300 Series.... the difference is the age and the odo numbers. l cant afford any of the above but in time; when and if l have enough money, l would be leaning towards the 300 Series purely for the fuel consumption as we head towards $3 bucks/litre. Another thing so many forget is the tank range which is really important when the fuel stops are few and far between. The 300 wins here for real.

    I don’t know how you were driving the Patrol… maybe enjoying the V8 a bit much 😂😂😂 but I average around 13 -14 litres per 100 in mine, I do about 160kms per day, half in the city and half on the freeway. I recently did a trip from the NSW Central Coast to the Gold Coast and back about 1800kms and I averaged 12 litres per 100 so it’s no where near as thirsty as people may think once the excitement of the amazing V8 wears off!!!

      Totally agree. I can get low to mid 11’s all freeway driving and that’s off the fuel pump at the servo, not dash read out
