WRX over-heats, could this get expensive?

  • The 'other' shop quoted thousands of dollars to replace head gaskets on this 2012 WRX to solve the overheating issue. Today, I test and find that the head gaskets are fine, and the thermostat is no good.

    I thought the easy stat test was to drop it in real hot water to see if it worked. Easier than draining twice? Not a mechanic so 🤷‍♂️

      Yeah, that’s a good way to test the thermostat. I wanted to see if it would solve the issue, so I went this route.

    How is that not considered "attempted theft" by the other shop? Seriously?

      I know it looks bad (and it could be) but, I wasn’t there. I don’t want to make an accusation without all the facts.

    Awesome Analysis and details sharing for it . I have 2006 Outback , During stop singals the Temp gauge raise to 213 F and fan kicks on and comes to 194F and it does happen on all the Stops , Can it be a failing Tstat ? please advise

      According to Subaru, your thermostat isn’t fully open yet until it reaches 203°. If you’re traveling at low speeds or stopped the low speed fan is commanded on at about 205° and the high-speed fan will kick on at 212°. What I would do is open up the hood to verify that the low-speed fan is coming on and if it isn’t, find out why.

    High Flow thermostats are preferred, like Motorad / etc.

      I do like Motorad's line that sticks open after an overheat condition. I've run a couple and no complaints.

    Seems like UA-cam creators either acknowledge that Subaru head gaskets have a long, L O N G history of failure, and everyone knows it, or they say, "only old composite gaskets failed" , and act like they rarely fail. I've done hundreds of them, over the years....

      They do fail a lot.

    Worm clamps on coolant hoses, fail.

      What's wrong with that?

    • @rolandotillit2867
      @rolandotillit2867 3 місяці тому +1

      @cutliss Worm clamps don't expand like spring clamps. Heat in the coolant and pressure in the system causes the hoses to expand. Worm clamps can cause the hose to fail by not allowing the hose to expand. You create pinch points with over tightened worm clamps. Spring clamps on the other hand make a tight seal and have some give to allow the hose to expand without pinching it.

    Radiator and turbo tank caps should be reversed
