    For me, the scar shows us not to judge a book by its cover. Sometimes, we're like Thorin. Only think about our own pain, our own bad experiences. Rarely (maybe never) think about other people's feelings (pain, sadness, etc) and experiences. I love this scene, because it shows us that Thranduil is not just a pretty face elf. He's an awesome elf.

    Loved this scene. Thranduil was visibly upset, he's not a complete jackass. He like Thorin puts himself and his people above all us. In a way, they have similar flaws. Pride.
    That's what makes characters like Legolas, Gimli, Frodo and Bilbo so heroic. They often put their pride aside for others.

    That voice! He's so hot and sexy. I hope the third part has a lot more of him. Lee Pace did an incredible job playing Thranduil. Gorgeous, gorgeous man.
    The only thing is that in the book, Thranduil shows the dwarves compassion and hospitality. What pisses him off is the dwarves not being honest with him of the reason for being in his kingdom of Mirkwood. I'm not sure what PJ is trying to do.
    My eyes are definitely enjoying Lee Pace

    1:56 Thranduil actually looks like he's going to cry. XD I actually love that, shows he's not heartless or cold, and might actually feel guilt/sadness over what happened.

    I don't even like Thranduil, but I don't get why people hate on him for what he did. He has his reasons, which weren't touched upon much (if at all) in the movies.

    Maybe that scar is a sign of his fights in the first age.
    Nargothrond and Gondolin were destroyed by Melkor's army with dragons... Thranduil could have lived in Doriath in the same time than Galadriel and Celeborn. When Doriath fell in the war with the dwarfs they could have moved to Gondolin the last elven kingdom of the first age that was destroyed by dragons and balrogs. Thranduil could have fought there along with his father Oropher and got that scar. Also in that last battle Glorfinder killed a Balrog and die in the scene.

    He's so creepy, look at him! Creeping like a creeper. I just LOVE IT! :D I think from the books he was meant to be a little eerie, not like Elrond or Galadriel at all (though the Lady of Light has her moments too), and he definitely is. Eerie and superior and all together . . . Thranduil just has no time for you and your . . . prosaic concerns. Bwahahaha!

    This scene is particuarly great because it is establishes the clashing of cultures between the Elves and the Dwarves and you can understand why Thorin is ngry with Thranduil, its a shame that the book doesn't address the extra details, this is very tense and well acted by Richard Armitadge and Lee Pace. Peter Jackson creates a tense feel within this scene job well done :)

    Thranduil will play a huge role in the 3rd Hobbit movie. He may appear to be greedy but he is noble. In the book, he didn't lock up all of the dwarfs in jail. He allowed them to roam around but they couldn't leave. So the movie portrayed Thranduil like a greedy villain.

    • @agreatlotrfan6178
      @agreatlotrfan6178 10 років тому +4

      I didn't know that Thranduil allowed the dwarves to roam around in the book I thought after Thorin did not tell him why they were in The Woodland Realm that he locked them in the cells and they were not allowed to leave those cells and Bilbo rescued them with his ring, putting the guards to sleep and they escaped by the barrels of course.

    • @GreenGreatDragon89
      @GreenGreatDragon89 10 років тому +2

      Kevin Stein you're right. but Kevin Ho he is noble also. and here, as in the book, he's not really easily distinguishable into 'good' or 'bad'; he's just looking after his own people. keep in mind that mirkwood is the only elven realm that doesn't have one of the elf-rings, so i imagine the stress of keeping it going would make anyone wary of outsiders.

    • @loljustice31
      @loljustice31 10 років тому +4

      To be honest, I kind of like him greedy. Up until now the impression I'd got of Tolkien's elves is that they're always so perfect and righteous in every way, and I don't like this association that "pretty = good." I liked seeing them have some ugly qualities as well.

      You need to go back and reread the book. The dwarves were locked up in different cells throughout the dungeons. Only Bilbo was running around freely and that's because he wore the Ring constantly. That is one part of the story Jackson got right....although there were no Elven girls in it.

    Eleanorminblack it's a reference to The Silmarillion, which details the events of the first age. in the final battle (the War of Wrath) against Sauron's master, Morgoth, the first winged dragons were unleashed. Thranduil is using magic to cover up burn scars from those first dragons (that bit is completely original--Tolkien makes no reference to Thranuil participating in the War of Wrath, although we do know that he was alive at the time.)

  • @Marguerite21

    Thranduil should have just let Thorin and the others go. I know that Thorin's grandfather was a greedy idiot and that he broke his deal with Thranduil long ago. But that doesn't mean he should have told Thorin to stay in his cell and rot. Come on, look at King Elrond who knew Thorin's quest. He may have disagreed about Thorin trying to get his homeland back. But he respected the dwarves business and their right to try to fight the dragon. He didn't choose to imprison them. Anyway, I can't forget that the wood Elves of Mirkwood are not like their kin. Just like Beorn said.

    If any of you seen the scene with king thranduil and the dwarf king thorin, it shows thranduil approaching him to pay respect to the dwarf king. The dwarf king shows him (thranduil) a diamond that belongs to the elves and slams it shut to show it off like i got it and thus begins a falling out between the dwarf king and thranduil. It originally belong to Thranduil the dwarfs according to my sources also took thranduils original home from him and he moved to mirkwood and expected him thranduil to pay for the diamond which originally belong to him its all on the internet the deleted scene and people are talking about it this is how i found out about thranduil and what this scene intels.

  • @oneworldfamily
    @oneworldfamily 10 років тому +3

    Can anyone offer a good explanation as to what Thranduil's manky face thing was about? I've seen the film twice now and it's still not clear why he started decomposing like that. The only thing I could think was that Thranduil had been burnt by a dragon once, but was covering up his scars with Elfish magic, and he just showed Thorin his scars to demonstrate the risk he's taking by disturbing Smaug.

    • @MrLantean
      @MrLantean 10 років тому +5

      Most likely Thranduil's injuries are real, not an illusion conjured by Elvish magic. He has terrible injuries to his right face and his right eye appears to have been blind. That's why he refused to aid the Dwarves to fight the dragon Smaug on the day it took Erebor and made it its lair. He warns Thorin the risk of retaking Erebor from Smaug and this time perhaps everyone in Throrin's company will not survive the wrath of Smaug unlike the fall of Erebor where most Dwarves survive.

    type in the hobbit thranduil and thorin scene on youtube it is the first video and it will show you the video of how thorin hurt and intentionally rubbed those diamonds in thranduils face if you read all the comments the people will tell you what happened in the book. yes, you'll be reading for awhile but you'll get the story. spoiler alert i also found out that bilbo gives the diamond that the dwarf son is after to thranduil not the dwarf son who goes mad over the damn diamond in the book. they told honey they told

    i wonder how good any movie would be if everything came off the pages and unto the screen exactly... I believe if the hobbit Movies were made exactly as they were in the book with the use of the appendixes of the lord of the rings, and some Director's common sense, they would be a bore to say the least. So for those who have a problem stick with the books and leave the movies alone. just like the spoke word is different from the written word, so too will movies differ from their books. they always do and they always will; get over it.

    I do not understand why the movie made Thranduil so arrogant, mindless and such a feminine bimbo.He was an elvish king wise and yes elves were beautifull! Is that a crime? In our world being beutifull is almost equal to stupidity and arrogance. We cannot understand how wisdom can exist with beauty without being arrogant and therefore we envy and mock everything that is beautifull. However one of the deepest desires of almost all humans is to be beautifull, but most people just can't, because they cannot understand that beauty is inside us and not outside. The face reflects the inner world. And just because they cannot conceive the real meaning of "beauty" they mock it like here at this movie. I was very dissapointed from the Thranduil character. I was expecting sth closer to the book (actually LOTR and Hobbit are so far far far away from the book that sometimes I forget that the movie is referring there)

      mjelement89 The actual correct pronunciation is sort of halfway between Tr and Thr, it's T with an extra sound on it, which is why in English it's written as Th instead of just T.
