    Which Star Wars character definitely should get a standalone film?
    One: Speak up and join the conversation- we encourage respectful debate.
    Two: Respect your community- racism, misogyny, homophobia and hate speech aren’t tolerated.
    Three: “Be nice.” - Dalton from Roadhouse

      Yeh anything post ROTJ, Red Letter Media said it best about this franchise, they are trying to make backdrop into a feature, all of this is is backdrop, Han Solo's backstory was unimportant, he was a smuggler there to give Luke and Ben a lift to where they wanted to go and on the way they develop a bond and that's about it, we never needed to see why his name was Solo or where he came from as he was actually only a supporting character in the first film, as was Bobba Fett in the second but thanks to nerds obsessing about wanting to know every little detail of the world now you have all these films delving into the window dressing of the first film and that's why it's hollow cos it has no substance the substance was the story of Luke, once you take Luke out there's really nothing to be telling a story about. These films will always be hollow now.@@filipeamaral216

    Thandie Newton did make an impact (can’t even remember any of the characters names) but sadly died so soon. But then what annoyed me was her death had 0 impact, I wanted Woody to be all “her death meant nothing!” Yelling at Han, but they completely didn’t mention her after the fight. Then also, Woody’s character told Han “I got by this long by not trusting anyone” again, didn’t he trust his wife?? I understand it was foreshadowing but it completely went against his character.

      Her death had a huge impact. The change you notice with him going "against his character" is because he changes after her death. He becomes more jaded and more sad. He lost the only hope he really had to be happy and so for the rest of the film he just tries to convince Han that love or trust won't get him anywhere because he thought it would work out for himself and it didn't.

    I think Alden did a great job of playing Han. It's very hard having to play a character already portrayed by somebody as good as Harrison Ford but he manages to do it in a way where you still believe it's Han Solo but not somebody just copying Harrison Ford. Really underrated performance and movie in general.

Is it a masterpiece, not really, but I thought it was a fun Saturday Matinee kind of Sci-Fi Action movie (you know, what the "Star Wars" movies were paying homage to). 11, AOTC
      10, Force Awakens
      9, Phantom Menace
      8, Rogue One
      7, Spaceballs (in my house it's a real SW movie ok?)
      6, Solo
      5, Revenge of the Sith
      4, The Last Jedi (ok it probably doesn't deserve to be here but I'm tired of seeing everyone throwing tantrums over it so that's why this is so high.)
      1, The original trilogy (tie because I change my mind about which is my favorite every time I watch them)

It's nice to see a movie in the Star Wars universe where the fate of the entire universe isn't on the line. And it was just fun. We saw Han on his journey to Harrison Ford-ness. And I'm assuming he kept the Solo name and passed it on because he simply accepted that it was the only name he had.

    Like most things negative Star Wars, the dice and the fuel, with the heavy focus on both in Solo, can be blamed on Rian Johnson making an emphasis of them in LJ. Never had the dice been emphasized, nor had there been fuel discussed in the entire Star Wars film universe. Johnson makes a movie where they're both integral parts of the plot, and Solo is written to legitimize Johnson's random inclusions.
    The dice were gone from Star Wars after their first appearance, before leia even shows up. She never sees them. Why she would associate them with Han is beyond me.
    Also, they should have made the Samus Aran pirate girl the daughter of Woody Harrelson and Thandie Newton who, disgusted at her parents greed and imbalance at working with Empire connected gangsters, set out to join the fledgling rebellion.

    • @jonathanw1019
      @jonathanw1019 6 років тому +1

      Not really. They were working on LJ first. It's owned and produced by one company. They did TONS of rewrites on Solo during the shoot and especially after. There's no reason to assume they didn't purposely write the plots to reflect one another and give legitimacy to whichever comes out first.

    I thought it was a fun movie, although it didn't really feel like there was enough backstory and character development for a whole movie. Although the Kessel Run was pretty cool, and it was cool to see a younger, softer Solo: it really enriches watching ANH for me, seeing his true character shine through his rough exterior in the end. Also I like how it gives a new perspective on droids in general, and gives throwaway lines like C3P0 talking about the Falcon's dialect - so much more meaning. It's almost like this move adds easter eggs to the OT, giving random lines meaning. Also I'm really intrigued by Darth Maul's plot, and I want to see how he goes from the leader of the Crimson Dawn to basically going to Malachor in search of Kenobi. It would be cool to see Maul get a small hint that Kenobi lives, making his story arc in Rebels kick off.

    Despite Solo's shortcomings, I still totally prefer it to Last Jedi. Over all I was entertained by Solo. I'm mostly just bummed that this movies failure has gotten in the way of Obi-Wan, the one spin off movie most of us actually want to see. I mean Ewan McGregor is hungry for it so give him his lightsaber and let him get his jedi on!

    • @cinemike8207
      @cinemike8207 6 років тому +16

      Well see that tends to work when you're not a fan of the directors vision that wasn't challenged. It all comes down to opinion but I thought that The Last Jedi was pretty weak and uninspired. That's not to say that there weren't some redeeming parts, after we get passed the Return Of The Jedi throne room remake then there is that cool lightsaber fight. I also liked Kylo Ren's story over all. Not as bad as the prequels but it had no lasting impression on me. There's just a lot of filler where nothing interesting happens. I mean it's actually a plot point in there that characters get arrested for a parking violation. Of all the vast directions that you could go in this genre and that's how imaginative he could get? Aside from Ben, I didn't like any other character storyline in this one. I felt most of the creative choices were uninteresting. I could go on into a bunch of detail but others have already gone on about the negatives enough. So yeah, I prefer the messy result of Solo's production over the singular vision of a guy who I feel doesn't understand Star Wars. Solo wasn't great either but I found it a more entertaining watch than watching an entire subplot involving rescuing space horses. Again, I recognize that my opinion only represents one side of this and that you're entitled to love Last Jedi. Each to their own.

      Hey so I'm not sure if your last response was deleted or if there's a glitch but for some reason it isn't appearing on here. So I can only respond to the part that I could see about your Brazil comment from my notifications. You brought up that executives tried to interfere with Terry Gilliam's vision for Brazil. For me, that's a totally different scenario because I think that Gilliam is a genius. Brazil was his baby and it didn't have to fulfill any expectations of fitting with in a larger storyline. I don't think you can compare the two. I'm usually very against studios interfering, especially when it comes to a true auteurs vision. Johnson has made some good movies in the past but in the case of Last Jedi, I personally feel that it was a bit of a mess. Again, not the worst Star Wars film. I'm not one of those haters and I do appreciate the elements of it that I think works. It's just as a whole I found it disappointing.

    I say, we just need a good intergalactic war movie, we haven't really had one since the prequels, we got one battle in Attack of the Clones, then two battles and a montage of death in revenge of the sith, then Rogue One and Solo only gave a taste of the war before the story goes off on its own. Please just give us the Old Republic where we get to see Sith and Jedi tearing each other apart on the ground in the mud. Both in Rogue One and Solo the battle was the most thrilling part there's danger, death and actual consequences and hardships of war.

      @maxbaugh9372 6 років тому +5

      All the potential is there but they have never executed on it in any meaningful way. The Republic/Empire is a semi-galactic civilization, they should have *billions* of star systems at their disposal, yet at best we see, what, a few hundred capital warships? and the strong implication that those are the bulk of their forces? At this point, enough actual numbers have been thrown around in canon that to really do justice to a full-scale galactic war would break the existing canon in the same way the hyperspace kamikaze in TLJ does. It would look & be awesome, but it would irreparably damage the existing description of the Star Wars galaxy.
