So true. One four word sentence sums it all up. I notice that dressing better elevates other people, and I experience it myself when I meet someone well dressed.
its been said by someone else, but ill echo that “its not about you” is a great quote. Tom Ford says that dressing well is a form of good manners, after all!
I really needed this list here. I'm a young guy who doesn't own a single suit, but as I've gotten older the thought of having a suit has been consistently getting heavier on my mind. The problem is that I didn't know where to start. THIS video has been a HUGE stress reliever, as I now have a clear starting point. Thanks, man!
I agree with most of this advice. I'd say it's also geographically specific. I'm in a part of the US that is super casual. Like, a collared shirt and dark denim is "dressy" here. When selling suits to clients, I usually recommend charcoal and navy as the first 2 suits anyone should own. You nailed it with this video!
Great point about feeling better. I get treated differently when I wear a suit. Maybe it's my attitude that changes. (I have a good attitude naturally) but I think wearing a suit makes me feel a bit more together and that comes across.
Well done Brian, I’m really enjoying your videos, and its good to have an American who presents clearly without the need to RAISE HIS VOICE! I love rmrs and alpha but its really not that dramatic! See you again soon Derek (uk)
I really enjoyed this video and thought your numbers all made perfect sense, as did the types of suits you selected. When I had to wear suits to work, I had 10 in rotation but found that 7 was actually perfectly fine when taking into account dry cleaning. I do prefer to wear all light weight suits in summer and heavier wool types in fall and winter. As always, thanks for sharing your expertise and experience.
I am definitely Number 4 and if you looked into my closet, the sky is most certainly the limit where I am concerned. I have so many suits that a clerk at a business I frequent a great deal asked me, “Just how many suits DO YOU OWN?” Just my two cents, but I would suggest the guys in the first two categories have a basic black suit, then maybe a grey or navy blue suit. Black goes with everything and appropriate for almost any occasion!
I am sort of between a person who never wears a suit and the occasional suit wearer. I bought a used medium grey Super 150's glen check suit for $60 I love, and investing in a nice charcoal suit soon for those more formal events. However, I find myself investing into sport coats more often than suits, as they usually fit my style more due to not needing to wear a suit very often, but can easily dress them up

I am probably a suit lover as I have found 16 suits in my closet. But I wear them occasionally, not everyday. You don't wear the same fabric in winter or in summer. Flannel when it's cold, different kinds of wool depending of the temperature, cotton or linen for the summer. Mostly different grays, navy, dark blue, brown, and sand color.
@@hespokestyle Yes of course. I don't like so much to wear wool when it's more than 70°-75°F. But I have too many suits, and some of them are worn out.
@@stanislas4990 you wouldn’t get much wear out of a suit then in places like Australia then. Maybe it’s the gsm of your fabric. I note that US brands seems to be at least 300gsm whereas we tend to stay within 250-300gsm in Australia

Hey Brian, I love the presentation here and the advice that you just gave. Though this comment is pretty late after you post this video, I want to say that this advice is truly helpful for me. Because you don't generalize people and instead you divide them into different categories. I'm a 24 year old guy who just starting to enter workforce and although my workplace does not require suit, but I would love to dress up nicely every now and then. So I'm in occasionaly suit wearer category. I only have black suit since suit culture is not very booming and necessary in my country, but now I'm considering to get navy & charcoal gray suits. This comment is pretty long, but when you read it I hope I can convey my message that this video is immensely helpful and you just gained a new subscriber. 😊

Anyway I must thank you for your informative information, many thanks, Debesh Mukherje, Kolkata, India.
Good stuff Brian! I think if you asked me about a year ago, I would've been eager to build a 10+ suit wardrobe but I've decided that 3 suits would be a great number for me: 1 formal, 1 stylish and 1 for the summer. Kind of like a watch collection I suppose! - Han
I'm definitely number 4, I don't have to wear suits to work (I work in software which is fairly casual. Professional, but casual) but I absolutely love to wear suits albeit with no tie as that would be a bit too much for my work environment. I haven't counted my suits in awhile but I think I have around 30. My dream is to have 100+ just like Cary Grant did who built one of those dry cleaner like hanging, motorized rack machines into this closet which ran through the attic in his California house so he could simply stand there and have the suit move by until he found one he liked. :) One day I'll have this. :D

Totally Agree with your Suggestion here... As Occasional Suit Wearer, my experience is 2 Suits (Navy and Blueish) is good enough to cover all the occassion.. but instead of third Suits i opt for Sports Jackets (Beige, Blue-Gray, unstructured Navy)
Another informative video. Other questions surround what older men over 65 should do on cuffs, pant width, color, etc. when purchasing new suits. I have not worn suits for work for 10 years…..now I cannot fit in my Size 40 and 34 pant. All of these suits and sport jackets are non starters. Maybe address issues like this for older men!

Great video, Brian! I absolutely agree with all of your choices and I am happy that I am in bracket no. 4, so I can buy as many suits as my bank account allows me to buy. ;)
In my opinion the amount of suits needed is like 15. I'll explain: 5 warm tweed ones in different pleasant colours (gray, brown, dark green or textured). The next ones are 5 regular wool fabric suits (black, navy, beige, light gray and textured one). And another 5 are extremely light linen ones for summer (light colours, striped, textured). Warmest greetings from Ukraine to the dapper looking gentlemen!
Good video. Thanks as always, Brian. Personally, I have more summer blazers than suits, but then again, I wear them casually. I prefer olive for the summer, but agreed that khaki is the safer choice.
Nice video, but for the guy has to wear a suit to work, I would go with pinstripe or two vs window pane. As for a khaki suit, by definition, it's already casual, so I would prefer one that's a little dressier with flap pockets because it's crisper look if you need to go to a summer event and need to step your game up. A seersucker is also a good choice for summer 👌
Was at Nordstrom recently & was looking for a dark navy suit & i must say they’re pretty pricey for me but i understand because of the material & that big purchase would go along way too. But I’m not tryna to break the bank atm either what would be a good suit with good quality to look for. Also seen some at macys & jc penny
Very good suggestions. I'm somewhere between Occasional Suit Wearer and Wears A Suit for Work.... I own 3 full suits, plus I own several really nice sport jackets that can dress up a pair of chinos or jeans.
I haven't interacted with your channel in years. Last time I was at the beginning of transitioning (retiring) from Active duty to graduating college and changing careers. Now several years have past and I'm once again looking to increase my "bespoke-ness". I have an opportunity in commercial banking, and will once again be increasing my suit collection and frequency of wear. I was a little critical (in a constructive way) in the past, but I knew exactly who I needed to seek out for apparel! My question is, how do you feel by online custom suit shops like Indochino? Do they make good products that are worth the money you spend, are they as good of a value as they seem? Are they close to a real custom fit bespoke shop? I probably need 2 more suits to get started. I don't want to spend a fortune, although I will hopefully increase the collection soon after getting the job.
If possible please make a video on vest/waistcoat -the most versatile -how to mix & match (suit, shirt&tie pairing) -how to style it? Single/double breasted -fabric options and patterns
Overall I like the recommendations but....Not sure about the Hopsack recommendation for the occasional suit guy. I think everyone needs the formal dark navy or charcoal. Hopsack probably isn’t best for funerals or more formal weddings.
Nicely done video I fall into the category of "suit lover" in the past I indeed had reason to wear suits on a regular basis therefore developing a passion for well crafted suits while I'm here in the comment section can you possibly do a video on neckties best for spring/summer thanks
Good idea! I was actually planning to do an entire necktie collection video in the near future. But I think a X number of summer ties is a great idea too!
My current problem is when stuff goes on sale my sizes 46L and 36x30 are popular so it’s hard to find. I work for the government in supply chain and I wished we dressed more formal. Dress down Fridays are fine
My hero is the playboy mayor of New York in the 1920's, Jimmy Walker. He went on a vacation to Europe with 4 dozen suits and 100 ties, and that was only a small part of his wardrobe!
Great complementary watch to Gentleman's Gazette's video on the same topic, since the categorization of the four types of men is pretty much identical, but the actual advice given differs slightly.
Oh yeah! Check out this playlist: ua-cam.com/video/lwsQyEAmBxM/v-deo.html And other playlists as well. You can just browse the videos section of the channel too.
Great video and advice, Brian. For which of the suits would you recommend to invest in a waistcoat as well? My favorites are the khaki cotton suit for summer, the titanium grey suit (my car has that color with a matte finish :) the chalk-stripe suit and of course also the trenchcoat (always a classic, for women as well :) .
He Spoke Style Thank you. Is it in any way a good idea to combine a waistcoat of a different color with a suit? For example a burgundy or black waistcoat with a grey suit?
Interesting video! How essential in your opinion is a suit with patch pockets? I know the 'conservative' way is with flap pockets, which in my opinion can look weird in some suits. Keep inspiring us!
Thanks, George. Depends on you. Depends on the fabric. Patch pockets are always more casual. So if the fabric is such that you think you would wear the jacket as a separate--hopsack, for example--I would do patch pockets. As I say at the end, it's really up to you and your preferences. These are just my recommendations.
Could you please do a video for those of us in year round hot climates. I live in central Florida where t shirts and shorts are pretty much the norm everyday. I also wear a uniform for work so I don’t get a chance to dress up. As a 50 yr old I wanna look cool and stylish but not out of place. Thanks so much!
I've got some questions if you don't mind. 1) What do you think of the navy herring pattern suit? 2) Is buying a suit from the discount outlet a good idea? (Off 5th ave.) The suit I'm looking at buying, if it's still on the rack this week, which it's been in the past 2 week window, is a navy herring. It's like $350.00 marked down from supposedly $1,300. The brand is called something like Hackberry along that line. 3) Do you know anything about this brand or a brand with a similar name and would you recommend it? 4) Also, do you know or think the prices at discount outlets are jus' marked up that high by the retailer jus' to make the customer think their getting a good deal? 5) What's your take on suits at Men's Wearhouse?
Hey Brian, great informative video thank you! I wanted to ask-what suit/from where is the shit you are wearing at 1:40 -1:47? Love the deep navy color!
in my opinion ,the minimum is one for summer one for winter , and then other 2 summer and winter with different level of formality ,, and i like wearing them as separate , no so much as suite , and i got only one complete suite , majority in my collection are just jackets , and few pants that will go with thows jackets, people that see you will remember easer the jacket rather than pants , is more vestal to have 3 jacket with one pants , than 3 pants with one jacket ,
For me the issue with heavier weight suits, even though I love the look, is that I am simply too warm as most offices ours and clients are run way too hot.
Hey Brian! Love the content and the new studio, but it seems like your face could use a little more lighting from the front. Too much contrast between light and dark areas. As always, thank you for everything!
Thanks for the feedback. Different than you’re used to, huh? I actually intentionally went to this style with more contrast. We are only bouncing one light off the ceiling instead of two and the key is higher. It’s a different look. I don’t feel like my face is too shadowed. You can see my eyes. I set it up myself since rob is not able to come over. He’s the lighting expert and may have some input when he’s back. No comment on the audio here?! First video with the MKH50.
@@hespokestyle OMG yes! The audio sounds much better, your voice sounds more upfront and intimate with less of the room reflections and more controled sibilance. (Really thankful for the sibilance part, a lot of youtube content pays no attention to that)

I’m missing the formality of suits in the office I used to wear them daily but now only rarely wear them for important meetings with external parties. For those who rarely wear suits I would have thought that a Navy and/or charcoal suit would suffice as some people don’t look good in charcoal suits.
I'm a suit lover, I would love to get my own tuxedo here soon and also a white tie suit/outfit (just to say I have it lol) well thats not completely true when I renew my wedding vows I would like to wear it or going to an opera or formal theater, that sounds nice what do you guys think?
I love your videos which are always very structured and straight to the point. I wear suits for work and I’m also a suits lover :) however I’m struggling sometimes to find the pair of shoes that matches the color/pattern of my suit (in particular brown shoes) 🤪 maybe an idea for one of your next videos 🤔😁😉
I think many people are between 2 and 4. I know I am. I appreciate quality tailoring, but my day to day work I only occasionally wear a sports coat and never a suit. Only wear a full suit a few times per month, between 0 and 3 times a month on average.
Hello, nice video. I see in some events, in our days, that there are men that goes shirtless suited, I mean, there are men that goes to the parties or to the events with a suit but without a shirt inside. What do you think about that?
I only just realized that the HSS shop has quite a few nice suits. Your advertisement is extremely subtle what I appreciate on the one side, but it could be a bit more ;-)
Hi Brian, great video. I was wondering what your thoughts are on where a tux would fall into these categories. I would think that the non-suit wearer would probably not have one, but would you say occasional suit wearers and guys who wear suits to work should have at least one tux in addition to their suits?
I’ve never worn a tux and I’ve been wearing suits for over a decade and work in a white collar profession with a stereotypical conservative outset. Alas, I’ve not been to award nights, the opera, or other black tie events. The most formal events I’ve been to are Cocktail Dress code for private viewings of art gallery events. I have come to the conclusion that formality is heavily influenced by the culture and changes depending on where one lives, we tend to be more relaxed in places like Australia

But I’m not tryna to break the bank atm either what would be a good suit with good quality to look for. Also seen some at macys & jc penny
Great video and very solid advice
Very good suggestions. I'm somewhere between Occasional Suit Wearer and Wears A Suit for Work.... I own 3 full suits, plus I own several really nice sport jackets that can dress up a pair of chinos or jeans.
Sport coats are very versatile. Well done.
I can't believe you mentioned the boys in the boat. Lets go UW I just graduated from there. Lets go.
Love this topic, thanks for the video
I enjoy your videos you explain stuff well. I own 2 suits in navy blue and dark grey.
Thanks! Good combo.
If possible please make a video on vest/waistcoat
-the most versatile
-how to mix & match (suit, shirt&tie pairing)
-how to style it? Single/double breasted
-fabric options and patterns
Awesome ideas! Thanks!
@@hespokestyle 😊👍
Overall I like the recommendations but....Not sure about the Hopsack recommendation for the occasional suit guy. I think everyone needs the formal dark navy or charcoal. Hopsack probably isn’t best for funerals or more formal weddings.
True.
@@hespokestyle Thanks I'm looking forward to seeing what you put together!
Well done Brian...thanks.
You're welcome, Kevin. Appreciate the comment.
Nice Information. And great video as usual. 😇👌 Can you do more video on Double Brested Suits and Blazers. 😇😇
In the fall, for sure!
@@hespokestyle Thank you very much ♥️
I Just found your chanel and it's amazing, thank you.
Excellent video as usual!
Thank you! Cheers!
Great complementary watch to Gentleman's Gazette's video on the same topic, since the categorization of the four types of men is pretty much identical, but the actual advice given differs slightly.
Appreciate that. There aren't too many ways to approach this topic!
Great video, thanks Brian, really helpful.
Glad you enjoyed it, Bruce!
This is a great video. Very informative. Do you have any more essentials videos like this?
Oh yeah! Check out this playlist: ua-cam.com/video/lwsQyEAmBxM/v-deo.html
And other playlists as well. You can just browse the videos section of the channel too.
@@hespokestyle Thanks Sir
@@Jebro439 Sure thing!
Thanks! I would stay away from a khaki cotton waistcoat, but a waistcoat with the others would exponentially increase versatility.
He Spoke Style Thank you. Is it in any way a good idea to combine a waistcoat of a different color with a suit? For example a burgundy or black waistcoat with a grey suit?
@@-lys-8014 Ah, the odd waistcoat... It's tricky. For me, it works better with fall/winter fabrics.
Nice video. I'm definitely the suit lover!
Nice!
Being an "occasional suit wearer" the suits that I have are navy, charcoal gray and true blue, it seems like I am not that lost.
Essential summer suits?
I’m thinking daily casual style, too hot for suits lol!😀
@@leazer44 Not linen!
Hah! Like what you wear running errands, every day living like a run to the grocery store and it not be athletic gear?
I've got some questions if you don't mind.
1) What do you think of the navy herring pattern suit?
2) Is buying a suit from the discount outlet a good idea? (Off 5th ave.)
The suit I'm looking at buying, if it's still on the rack this week, which it's been in the past 2 week window, is a navy herring.
Many thanks! The suit is custom Ermengildo Zegna. The shirt is our own: hespokestyle.com/product/white-poplin-dress-shirt/
I'm new to the channel. U're just great, love the videos.. keep up the hard work
Welcome aboard!
in my opinion ,the minimum is one for summer one for winter , and then other 2 summer and winter with different level of formality ,, and i like wearing them as separate , no so much as suite , and i got only one complete suite , majority in my collection are just jackets , and few pants that will go with thows jackets, people that see you will remember easer the jacket rather than pants , is more vestal to have 3 jacket with one pants , than 3 pants with one jacket ,
Whatever makes you happy!
YES
For me the issue with heavier weight suits, even though I love the look, is that I am simply too warm as most offices ours and clients are run way too hot.
Thanks for this!
You got it, George!
(Really thankful for the sibilance part, a lot of youtube content pays no attention to that)
@@k1ll3r957 Yes! Admittedly, I led you to talk about the audio but Ian kept laughing at me because I was so in love with this mic and I said I bet someone comments about it! Lol. We added a couple Auralex 4'x2' acoustic panels to the mix today which will also greatly assist!
Love from Miami. YPro yes indeed, I have really enjoyed this look and style. Great work on the video. Now I have to get ready to hit the club again both this video in style and then Delta Parole - Wasted Music Video that I had watched before this again since every night out I rock out to it first goes stunnin smooth, motivated me to be the man tonight. What are any of you other beautiful peoples hit the club songs when we can again?
I’m an investment banker so my job requires wearing a suit and tie. I have 30 tailored suits and I love wearing each one of them.
Ah, that's amazing! Which is your favorite and where is it from?
My favorite is a navy suit from Hugo Boss. Second favorite is a brown suit from Brooks Brothers.
Have you tried any Hickey Freeman suits? I love them.
@@thehoneybadgerusmc Hello friend get me a job at ur bank haha
I’m missing the formality of suits in the office I used to wear them daily but now only rarely wear them for important meetings with external parties. For those who rarely wear suits I would have thought that a Navy and/or charcoal suit would suffice as some people don’t look good in charcoal suits.
5 suits. Black, Blue, Grey, Tan, Brown
Thank you for an interesting video. BTW, I was wondering if you would consider doing a summer every day carry video ? Thanking you in advance.
What do you think about pre owned nen dress pants or blazers to wear ? Of course im dry cleaning the clothes..
Great topic. We strive to always be succinct and give you only the info you're looking for!
I think many people are between 2 and 4. I know I am. I appreciate quality tailoring, but my day to day work I only occasionally wear a sports coat and never a suit. Only wear a full suit a few times per month, between 0 and 3 times a month on average.
Great content!
Many thanks, Bill!
Hello, nice video. I see in some events, in our days, that there are men that goes shirtless suited, I mean, there are men that goes to the parties or to the events with a suit but without a shirt inside. What do you think about that?
Great Video
Glad you enjoyed it
I only just realized that the HSS shop has quite a few nice suits. Your advertisement is extremely subtle what I appreciate on the one side, but it could be a bit more ;-)
I own 5 suits and 2 sports coats for church , social functions and job fair/interviews
What are your suits size? You have the perfect body frame for a suit..👍 very inspirational. You are my go to person for advice.. thanks..👍
I’d like to start wearing a suit more often to look put together....what is a good one and done dress shoe?
love this channel
Appreciate your support.
Good advice
