Before 'The Women' there was 'Stage Door' to prove that actresses could carry a picture without needing lots of handsome hunks romancing them. The formidable Adolph Menjou is a boss, not a beau.
Note that Ann Miller does not get a credit. Always the Hollywood bridesmaid, but the reviewers singled her out.

Yes - Lucy was 26 when Stage Door premiered.
She said it was her big break as a film actress.

Kate got top billing, but Ginger got the first intro! At this time, Kate was labeled "box office poison", so RKO tossed in Ginger, who fans flocked to see in any movie, to try to turn the tide. It worked and Kate was back in business, but Ginger stole the movie :) Add in Lucille Ball, baby Ann Miller (who lied to work, was 14 or 16yo) and Adolph Menjou, and it was a winning formula!
