    Thanks Pete! You explained all API2500 settings except LINK. I wonder why you compress L/R same way in mix bus - LINK 100%? I normally use dual-mono mode (IND) so I'll get some "movement" in the mix.

    for the brainworx on the mixbuss, if you slap on the mono maker but the instruments are already eq'd or set to mono or stereo and high pass filtered, does the mono maker do anything?

    I have been watching your video they're very informative and great! my question is a lot of engineer always talk about to gain matching plugins but I saw when you bypass your plugins the mix sound softer and with them the mix louder and I watch CLA and Steven Slate vid same thing (Mix louder with plugins) so how can you help me with that because I got a bit confused . Always try to make my mixes as loud as they are with or without plugins. also Should I use a limiter in the mix phase or after the mix done?

    • @MixBetterNowTV
      @MixBetterNowTV  6 років тому

      edouard Philippe Hey Edouard. Thx for the kind words. Not sure what you're specifically asking in regards to "try and make my mixes as loud as they are with or without plugins"? I never recommend trying to make anything in the mixing phase as loud as possible. I always leave that for mastering. When you add plugins to your mix buss the overall volume of the track is inherently going to get louder. Adding compression and sweetening and additive EQ will just naturally do that. You can try and level match as much as possible but if you have 4 or 6 plugins on your mixbuss chances are it's going to be louder than with nothing on there. So expand on your question and I'll try to answer it. Also, using a limited is not essential. I do not use it to push level. I only have a limiter on my mixbuss as a safety net to catch any overages or extra loud transients that slip past the compressor. Hope that helps! 🤙🏻😊

    Hey Pete. Great video. Can you touch upon that 20 hz bump that you’re doing?

    • @MixBetterNowTV
      @MixBetterNowTV  6 років тому +3

      John Core Sure John. It's something I call the Pultec trick. It's where you boost and cut the same frequency at the same time which winds up tightening the low end and adding some lovely weight and punch to the kick and bass. I have a video I made on the topic called the Pultec Mixbuss Trick. Just search for Pultec on the channel and you should find it 👍🏻😉

    • @johncore363

      Brilliant, thank you Pete. I also have a question - you use 15ips on the masterbus, which surprised me a bit - why this rather than 30ips?

    • @MixBetterNowTV
      @MixBetterNowTV  6 років тому +1

      Anthony Lee Because 15 IPS and 30 IPS always sound different. The faster you run your tape speed, the more "hi-fi" it will sound and vice versa going slower. Sometimes 30 is fine... sometimes 15 is what I'm after. If it's a song a la The White Stripes or something like that I might use a 7.5 IPS tape speed. Inches per second dictates tonality (just like compressors do) and my choice here was 15 because I liked the way it sounded. All part of the beautiful subjectivity that is mixing 👍🏻👌🏻😛

      PROFESSA KAOS Well, I kind of like to work in both Studio One and Pro Tools. It just all depends on what mood I'm in. Some sessions I have are old and were mixed or at least prepped in Pro Tools so I just open them up and use them accordingly. No particular reason really. I actually prefer mixing in Studio One and recording in Pro Tools. I also prefer being creative and writing in Studio One. I also have a few clients who only work in Pro Tools so I can't really ditch PT. Plus from a teaching point of view, there's statistically more Pro Tools users out there than Studio One users so I just sort of pop back and forth to try and keep everyone happy. But then again I'm sure it might drive some people crazy haha. I dunno man. Heck I even hop on Logic once in awhile. Just keeps me inspired to work in whatever I'm feeling. Like putting on a different outfit or something 😜🤗

    Hi Pete, I need your advise. I'm searching for a plugin to bring shine on my mixes, for that smooth creamy high end we hear on expensive records. I already have the UAD Pultec, etc... but I don't like to boost the high end on my 2buss. Is the Drawmer ou the Clariphonic that kind of plugin to buy?
    Sometimes I do compressing only the highs with a multi band to bring that expensive sound, but doesn't work all the times.
    Sorry for my bad English,
    regards, from France,
    Julien

    • @MixBetterNowTV
      @MixBetterNowTV  6 років тому

      Julien M Hey Julien. No worries your English is fine. Better than my French, haha! In regards to your question I do like the Clariphonic and I do like the Drawmer. But why don't you demo each and compare them and then see which you prefer? For what it's worth I almost never use the Drawmer at 100% wet... I always use it with the mix knob set anywhere from 10-50%.
      The other thing you might want to consider is increasing your overall EQ skill level. Maybe you don't need a plugin but rather some education. I always prefer investing in education over plugins. You should go to my other website (LearningToMix.com) and sign up for the 14 Day Free Trial. The amount of teaching we do over there immense and we share everything we know. I think a few months at Learning To Mix would really elevate your EQ skills and you may not even need a plugin at all. In addition, you'll learn a ton from all of the other stuff we teach in as well as get a brand new set of multitracks each month that you download and keep. Nothing to lose by giving it a try! 👍🏻😊

    • @joolm4976
      @joolm4976 6 років тому

      Thanks for your time Pete.
      I can't test them cause I don't have an Ilok, I use only 100% UAD plugins with an Apollo+Macbook configuration, and UA don't have that kind of plugins on their catalog. So I'm thinking about entering in the Ilok world
      I spend the last 20 years learning audio, (I'm 38 :) ), and I'm pretty happy with my eq balance most of the times, but I can't always obtain the result I want with EQ only.
      On vocals (for examples)I do compressing only the high in parallel for that expensive sweet highs, but I can't apply that technique on my 2buss. Sometimes I would like to do this directly on the 2buss, but I only have a MB compressor that's not working all the times.
      It seems the drawmer and the Kush are that kind of effect I need. It's why I asked you.
      Maybe I should try treating my 2buss in parallel, but I don't want to mess in that direction :).
      Keep doing your great video.Thx.

    Nice vlogs! Would love to see a vlog on how you mix to two tracks. Your process for bouncing all those tracks and plug-ins. Also, if you could show/explain your recording devices. What monstrous CPU and gear to handle those gazillion plug ins you use. Mixing is completely subjective. One mans rumble is another mans wonderful overtones! Rawk!

    Hey Pete love the videos. So I see in the submix it is somewhat clipping by 2.4 db, but being that it is the submix it is really not clipping because of the floating point. When it outputs to the mix bus master fader are you using that pro L to brickwall it so it doesnt clip going out?

    • @MixBetterNowTV
      @MixBetterNowTV  6 років тому +1

      Raphael Robinson Thx Raphael. Glad you dig the vids 🤘🏻 Yeah so the Submix was clipping when I was bypassing the Oxford Limiter I have on it. The Oxford Limiter (which normally stays on) handles that and then I have the Pro-L on the MixBuss as a double safety net OR in the event I choose to not send something through all the Submix processing (like drum samples which 99% of the time are already heavily EQ'd and compressed). I try and run the most transparent limiters possible and I really love the Sonnox and the FabFilter (the Pro-L2 which I recently picked up is even better than the Pro-L 😍). Hope that helps 🤙🏻✌🏻

    • @MixBetterNowTV
      @MixBetterNowTV  6 років тому

      WheelieMix I like to compress first because it makes the quieter parts of the mix louder and enhances certain frequencies. I find I can achieve the sounds I want by compressing before I EQ. There’s no right or wrong answer. It’s just whatever works for you. 😊

    chain ? To glue everything that has been compress and EQ'd. ?

    • @MixBetterNowTV
      @MixBetterNowTV  6 років тому

      Marlow Durden For me that's a subjective thing. The age old debate of EQ before compression or compression before EQ. I think it just depends on your tastes and what you think sounds good. The only rule of audio I know is "if it sound good it is good". I don't like to push my additive EQ into the compressor (specifically on the 2bus) hence why I choose to order my chain this way.
