  • We drove from north NJ to Centralia to shoot. It is a very cool place if you don't mind breathing in the smoke.
    Wikipedia Info:
Centralia is a borough and ghost town in Columbia County, Pennsylvania, United States. Its population has dwindled from over 1,000 residents in 1981 to 12 in 2005[1] and 9 in 2007,[2] as a result of a mine fire burning beneath the borough since 1962.
"This was a world where no human could live, hotter than the planet Mercury, its atmosphere as poisonous as Saturn's. At the heart of the fire, temperatures easily exceeded 1,000 degrees. Lethal clouds of carbon monoxide and other gases swirled through the rock chambers."
Though it originally fielded its own three-man department (one full time chief and two part-time officers) during the latter part of the twentieth century, Centralia Borough is now patrolled by the Pennsylvania State Police Bloomsburg Station.

Beautiful videography. When my husband was in high school this section of 61 was still open- he loved driving on it, because the "dip" in the road that couldn't be fixed no matter how many times PennDOT filled it in. It was quite the "stomach dropper".

Real nice job. I just moved to central PA, I remember hearing about Centralia but I never realized until today that I'm less than 50 miles from it now. Can't wait 'til spring. I'm there first chance I get! Again, real nice job on the vid.

Centralia was a coal mining town in Pennsylvania. In the 60s, the mine tunnels caught fire which destroyed the land and cracked the highway. They are said to burn for another 200 years. I am sure the smoke isn't good to breath in, in large amounts. I got a headache after shooting this and I was there for only a few hours.

Thanks! The HVX is nice. The DVX will always have a place in my heart. I don't think it was very hard getting there from NJ. Took about 3 hours on I-80 I think. I parked in a little pull-off area next to the abandoned highway next to a cemetery. I went twice and never had a problem with cops or anything. It is an interesting area.

@VegasSantamarina I shot it in 4x3 originally. I used to shoot knowing I would crop the top and the bottom of the video a bit to give it a more wide screen look without actually being wide screen. I exported a uncompressed Quicktime video of it and took it into After Effects and blew it up with a plugin called InstantHD. I think the version I ended with was 1280x720.

Yeah, it got dark too quick to shoot some more. I really just wanted to get the highway shots and some smoke that day since I thought they would fit nicely into my demo reel, but I plan on going back and shooting more in HD.

@BenjaminKatzVideos Hey Ben. My scene file on the DVX is f6 on the dial with every numerical value at zero to make it flat looking. All the other settings are the same as whatever they were originally. I usually just mess with the curves and the 3 way corrector in Vegas. I am going back to Centralia this week to shoot in HD so watch out for that video too if I upload it to here. If not it will be on my vimeo page.

I had the DVX with a SGpro Rev3 35mm adapter on the front. It was all sitting on a rail system with shoulder and grip mounts by Cavision. I may have had a tripod for some shots too but I can't remember. I hated using a tripod.

You should. I was there this past April with my daughter, her friend, & my parents (my vid is back on my channel), and the steam is easier to see in the wintertime. It was a quick & easy 200 miles to drive. It was like I was magnetically drawn there.

I would really like to learn more about choosing the right music for a video containing random shots from a random town in Pennsylvania uploaded to show random people what happens when an underground coal mine catches fire. I look forward to your knowledge and input.

Silent Hill was just a old video game they made into a movie. In the movie, the town of Silent Hill was an abandoned town with underground coal fires.
I believe the inspiration for the town in the movie came from Centralia. Except for the ghosts and demons in the movie....

@pockmarkedbuttocks Thank you for your comment, but I am confused as to why you are calling me a punk when you are the one who is going to my videos and whining about the music I have playing in the background? It is strange that someone can be so unhappy upon hearing music in the background of a video such as this. I hope to improve my music selection and to stop choosing songs randomly based on the length of the song compared to the length of my footage when it is in the time line.

There are so many other videos they could have watched. The video quality is brilliant, and at least they get to see part of the damn town, but they can't get over the brilliant choice of music? Shame. Louis is amazing, by the way. I loved it.

  • @stevenbogda
    @stevenbogda  12 років тому

I only titled it that because it was the town that was used for inspiration when creating the Silent Hill movie with the ash falling from the sky because of the coal fires underground. I wasn't trying to make some kind of zombie video with eerie music to scare people that end up here...

@7239763 Silent Hill is an old video game. They made a movie based off of the game like 5 years ago. The director of the movie was influenced by Centralia, PA when creating the setting for the movie. The movie's main plot takes place in an abandoned ghost town where mine fires burn underground causing ash to constantly snow down. There are also zombies in the movie...but not in Pennsylvania.

  • @stevenbogda

You could get a motorcycle on it without a problem. A car would not work though because both ends of the highway are blocked off by large piles of rock. You would have to cut some trees down to get a car on it.
