This video has inspired me for the last 9 years. Today, I was able to visit Centralia for the first time. It was an incredible experience. I'm so glad you were able to make this when the steam and Route 61 were still in its prime.
i3yucougar23 yes it was crazy to only see that yellow star as graffiti. if I go there again I'm going to see if you can still see any remnants of it or if it had been cover over and over again like the rest.
This is a normal for me, I live just like 15 mins from centralia. There's only 2 people living there at the moment. The rest of them got money from the government to buy a house or do whatever with. They say my town could collapse in 100 years or so because of the rapid amount of coal coming towards us underground. 😬
Jerell Bechtel so I'll ask you when I posted on another site. are the other towns in danger of this happening to them because of the coal that's burning underground. If so why don't they do more to stop this fire. I get it's hard and it's going to cost a ton of money but if this keeps on spreading it will continue to ruin the countryside and displaced people. Pennsylvania's beautiful and it's sad to watch it being burnt up like this.
Thank you for sharing this video - and captured so many years ago as well. There are many documentaries and videos now online as well, telling the horror story the residents here faced.
Wonderful job on documenting this! I've been to Centrailia before, and I think you did an excellent job in pointing out the features that really define the town. One thing I think you should have added is the fact that the fires have been going on in Centrailia for over 40 years now, and that they've tried putting out the fires with no success, but overall great documentary.
He is not being a drama queen, i would be scared shitless knowing that i was living so close to something that scared me and entered my nightmares as a kid.
MrSir2552 No it wasn't. This town's past about the coal mine catching fire was only used as inspiration for part of the Silent Hill movie's backstory. It has nothing to do with the games. Just in case you didn't know.
dude thanks for uploading this, i've been gazing at centralia with google earth for awhile now, i'm a huge fan of the silent hill series and i've always been really curious about the town that inspired parts of the movie. obviously there's no REAL silent hill, but just the fact that it suffered a similar fate and is almost completely abandoned sets my curiosity ablaze. kudos
@SMFApples Haha I wonder myself about the potatoes. If only they had 1080p cameras and editing equipment when I made this back in 2002. Unfortunately $3,000 was a princely sum for a high school student to pay for one of the cheapest HD cameras at that time: the Canon XL-1. :-)
@RazorCell7 The town had been dumping their trash in a mine and called local firefighters to incinerate it. They didn't put out the fire and it spread through the mines under the town growing in intensity, sucking in oxygen from above and spewing out fumes. It started in 1962 and is estimated to continue burning for another 250 years.
In my restless dreams, I see that town, Silent Hill. You promised you’d take me there again someday… but you never did. Well, I’m alone there now, In our “special place,” Waiting for you.
I'm from Lancaster Pennsylvania and I pass by Centralia every weekend.(almost) I know almost everything about Pennsylvania.:) U can say I love my state. Truly obsessed.
:/ Centralia didn't the real silent hill for the games you know, it was for the movie but for the games it was actually the matsuo mines that inspired silent hill, one being that its in Japan, two because it happened more recently than Centralia and three because some Japanese told of these shadowy figures, and in the game its always mist that covers silent hill. Matsuo mine is covered by a everlasting mist, Centralia is smoke, both mines but matsuo mine had the mist
Alexander Montoya Did you play the game at all? What makes you think in the game it is smoke? There is a mine fire under Silent Hill, yes IN THE GAME. I know they made a bigger point of it in the movie, but if you read the flavor text (the news paper clippings) in Silent Hill II at the very least, it tells you that the underground mine caught on fire and many people were burned hence why in the game you have char apparitions that appear during the dark times. They appeared in several cut scenes when the main protagonist (you) are chasing your daughter. The movie was inspired by several of the games, but primarily SH II.
O.o I didn't say the game was smoke I said it was mist and yes I did play them all and for a fact matsuo MINE was an inspiration for silent hill. The movie was based of Centralia
Alexander Montoya I did not say Matsuo mine was not the original inspiration for the original Silent Hill game. Are you sure you are not talking about SH 1? Because the movie was primarily based on SH 2 and the newspaper clippings late in the game SH II specifically talk about a MINE FIRE and there are charred flesh creatures that show up in some cutscenes. I remember because it freaked me the hell out the first time I played it. How would MIST cause people to be charred? Yes I do believe there is mention that the town is surrounded by mist, but IN town it's smoke. At the very least it is both, but not not smoke, otherwise the paper clippings and cut scenes make no sense. If you think they made up the smoke in town for in the movie completely up, you are wrong. It's in the game as well.
I was just there this past summer and the place where they filmed this is no longer smoking. The fire has moved on and the air isn't too toxic. It's a pretty interesting place to visit, but since the fire has moved, it's not too exciting unless you just like to look at ghost towns. :)
Theres a certain level of wonder and excitement about ghost towns. seeing a town that once held vast amounts of life, regular people like you and me, busy with their days, reading the paper, driving their cars being quickly abandoned to the point that the remnants of life still are there but long forgotten, framed in time and over come by nature. I was there last summer. it is amazing to see the difference tourism and nature has done since was filmed. there isn't smoke and heat like that anymore. the city is almost completely grown over. and to see 61 without graffiti over top of older graffiti is kinda interesting and the then chard trees are still in that same crack in the highway. I actually camped there over night in one of the over grown city blocks where some one house most likely was at one time.
***** coolio at least its good to know there's pieces around cause some can be very good or complex which are good things to come across. . that and a clear wall.
Very interesting. I clicked on this video after watching another UA-cam video about the Siberian Traps. "Traps" is Swedish for steps. They are geologic formations in Siberia created when a huge lava plume broke through the earth's crust 250 million years ago and made an enormous lava flow in the heart of Siberia. That also ignited the enormous coal field under the flow creating the same effect as Centralia. But this covered about half of Siberia at the time and nearly caused global extinction of all animal, bacterial and plant life.
I think the word you're looking for is either 'trappa', which means stairs or 'steg' which means steps. Trappsteg is another way to describe the steps in stairs.
I visited last summer and there was no visible smoke coming out of the ground at all. It was a really, really underwhelming sight-seeing trip. I did enjoy seeing the big wind turbine visible on the ridge 5-10 miles away, though... nice to see some green energy in PA. I think that's it at 3:15 in the top left corner
Years l8er... the steam and heat would create such preasure there would be guisers and explostions maybe even sink holes. Thats not 100% because precations could be taken to prevent this.. but its pretty dangerous still.
I love Centralia, I had family there when I was little and I try and go every year. Its what the world would be like if it ended. Haunting peaceful and deserted. except for the guys at the garage drinking beer and all the garbage thats there now. I think u guys did great on the video.
Was just here yesterday. It isn't quite as dramatic anymore but you can still see steam from cracks and holes in the ground. Where the highway turns at 43 seconds, park and walk up the old rt 61. The road is split and steam is coming out there as well. Most of the other areas are filled and barren. It's sad to see what has happened to the town.
A question for people who been here recently. I went up a week ago and while I was there, practically no smoke. I could see a tiny bit and I could definitely feel heat from the hillside but very little smoke was there. The day I went it was sunny and about 86 outside. Do you guys think it was just to hot to see any mass amounts of smoke or that the fire is moving away therefore smoke will no longer be there?
OMG !! What on earth am looking at ! What a feeling ! what a dream ! I'm so inspired.. Centralia town looks just as atmospheric as Silent Hill *__* My feelings are outta control.. I do really wish I'm there living the moment.. I mean wOow ...! What a feeeeeeeeeeeling
Hej Garrett, I am a TV-Journalist from Germany, working for a TV-Channel. We are searching for film footage about Centralia like yours. Can we use one or two scenes of your film. And do you have this film in a better quality? Would be great!
Was just there last week. So surreal. The ground is insanely hot, whoever was doubting the match lighting in this video. I didn't try it, but definitely believe it's possible.
OK - good video, but Centralia, PA isn't even close to being the story of Silent Hill - I really hate that correlation (yeah, both are mine fires, big deal.) Sadly for this town, the corporate interests came first. With billions of dollars worth of coal remaining below the town of Centralia, the mining interests (who once owned the town) had only one recourse. Since Centralia bought the mineral rights under a Pennsylvania law enacted in the 1940's, the only way for the mining companies to get the rights back would be to take the town by eminent domain, which could be done by declaring the are uninhabitable. If you go there today however, you would doubt that this was necessary - the mine fire has pretty much moved on, and only one small part of town remains affected by the fire. All detailed in my historical novel, Centralia PA, Devils Fire (Amazon.) For the historical adventurer of abandoned towns, Centralia is worth a visit, and there are lots of other cool historical sites and mining museums in the area to visit. www.centraliapadevilsfire.com/
Easily. They drive cars:) I go to/through Centralia multiple times a year when visiting family. The town isn't condemned or blocked off from the world. You can get to it and drive right through it. It's where I used to play, go to church, ride bikes, and had a great childhood since I lived above the town. Was the nicest little place with the greatest people. Just memories now.
The story of Centralia, PA is very tragic. A nice little town literally destroyed due to this fire. Imagine what the town would be like now if the disaster didn't happen. The idea of Silent Hill, the movie, was inspired by Centralia. Even if it isn't freaky or scary now, the idea of a fire burning there underneath the town is scary in itself. And so sad to see those 10-15 people still living there not letting it go. I wonder how living there all this time affected their health and lives.
I remember when this video popped out 17 years ago my God cant believe its still here One of the oldest videos on youtube. I Wonder if author is still alive
@PennyDreadful1 I know what you mean but the point is that the movies screenwriter was indeed inspired by centralia for his movie adaptation of silent hill. Obviously we have our own idea of what silent hill is from playing the video game in the first place.
I live in southern WV and they're are several coal seems burning here also. It is in a non populated area so it really doesn't cause much damage other than to the trees and land.
I live within a three-hour drive of the place (DC area). I've driven up there before. I hear the place is marked off with NO TRESPASSING signs and a lot of places are now off-limits. They also tore down the old washhouse near the place. I wonder what's up there now?
umm the abandoned highway is quite noticeable before you enter centralia. if you're coming to centralia from rt 61 theres a road with a sign that says "road closed"
"We cannot segregate the human heart from the environment outside us and say that once one of these is reformed everything will be improved. Man is organic with the world. His inner life moulds the environment and is itself also deeply affected by it," - Shoghi Effendi, Baha'i Faith. As a Baha'i, I believe we must be in harmony with the environment and all living creatures. My personal belief is that we are the gardeners of this earth. I was born just down hwy 61 from Centralia, Coal Township in Ranshaw, PA. I am disappointed how the government totally gave up on any solution in this... a very ultra high tech age.
I know I wouldn't die but just having those warning signs, the feeling of isolation, and the smoke coming from the ground. It's all just very unsettling and eerie ya know?

My friend has a t-shirt that says, "Centralia, Pa Fire Department" on the front and "Always on duty" on the back.

Jerell Bechtel I feel sorry for your town
@Robert Hays Makes sense to me, I kinda wonder why they haven't done that. It could be an elevation thing I guess but that's just speculation.
I love the atmosphere you have created with this piece...particularly the music.
Me too
I need to go here. dress up as pyramid head and scare the fuck out of some tourists. :D

Why do 8-15 people live there? How do they survive? Is there any footage at night? Has anyone interviewed them?

And so sad to see those 10-15 people still living there not letting it go. I wonder how living there all this time affected their health and lives.
Dude I love this I'm so obsessed with it ugh
That is so weird but at the same time cool. I can't believe they left it like that. Is it still like that today?
I remember when this video popped out 17 years ago my God cant believe its still here
One of the oldest videos on youtube. I Wonder if author is still alive
He passed away earlier this morning 😢
I'll be going here in September. I am so excited!

I love the way he described via video that people are actually mercy less , what we have done to his nature...
i probably watch this video about once a year
I live within a three-hour drive of the place (DC area). I've driven up there before. I hear the place is marked off with NO TRESPASSING signs and a lot of places are now off-limits. They also tore down the old washhouse near the place. I wonder what's up there now?
nicely done video!
umm the abandoned highway is quite noticeable before you enter centralia. if you're coming to centralia from rt 61 theres a road with a sign that says "road closed"
this was one of the best movies I've seen👍
